ok i dont know whether this should be in general discusion or not but anyway.i think that shields should have a purpus.in alot of games having to weapons is always the best choice because shields are useless.i would really like to see shields being worth something and worth using

yes but in most games shields dont make a difference either way.and i like shields.

Rest assured that shields -will- influence something or other in time. They won\'t remain purely aesthetic decorations forever.

Hmm...I\'d like to see shields as a bashing weapon too...you know...when you are losing a fight and the opponent is about to strike the final blow...you wack them with your shield and win? ;)

Yea, with time, but one has to keep in mind two things.
When you use 2 swords you train only one skill, using shield and sword, you use 2 skills and so have to train the simulatiously. It takes more resourcers.
Second is, with two swords you strike twice as often with the same strenght.

So, even if shield will reduce by 1/2 damage of enemy hits, what will give in theory the same chances for person with 2 swords and person with sword and shield, it will be only when they are on the same level of training. In fact the person which use two swords will progress faster then the person which have to train 2 separate skills.

How to make it more balanced?
As i once suggested, divide the curent skills on more basic ones. Each tool/weapon/action uses some % of some of these skills. Many different actions and use of different tools/weapons will use the same skills, but in different %.
These skills will be also trained at the same time with the same % as they are used.
It won\'t solve the above problem completly, but will help a lot. In fact, many other problems connected to different skills training and connections beatwen them will be solved.

Finally, I think that use of two weapons at one time, should be a skill, or complex of skills coz of my above proposition. It hadn\'t happened often people were fighting with 2 weapons at one time. They were fighting with one weapon, even without shield, because they wasn\'t trained to use it, like they wasn\'t used to art of coordinating attacks with use of two weapons. And it wasn\'t because swords were expensive. Thugs used only one club.

I also hope that shields will become more useful than in most other games of this kind. Usually you see a shield adding to the defence value while actually blocking with it is more an exception than a rule. In some games it is possible but has a low chance of blocking.
In reality I think having a shield should allow you to block 70-90% of the incoming blows, depending on the size of the shield. The only way a shield would fail to block an attack is if the attacker is incredibly fast or skilled, you are attacked from behind and your shield is useless or the shield fails to absorb the damage and thus breaks.
I\'d like to see those three options for breaking through a shield. When fighting against someone with a shield you\'ll have a very low chance to hit the vital parts, practically no chance to hit the chest while feet and legs will be somewhat easier. To get through their defences you\'ll either have to move behind them, where they can\'t block, use special techniques like for example a distraction to the head (the defenders shield will go up, leaving him blinded) and then the real strike to the lower body parts or such a powerful attack that you will crack or penetrate the shield (by a blunt or piercing weapon).

In general shields should be extremely effective as a defensive item but they will have a reduced mobility, depending on the size and weight of the shield and of course they will give the wielder a reduced offence.

Another little detail, it would be nice if equiped shields remove part of your field of vision in first person camera mode ... similar to how it is in the RPG Morrowind. When carrying a shield it will take up a significant portion of your vision, leaving you disadvantaged.

I fight medieval style regularly.  I am a sword and board man (well I like flails more) but with shields this is my RL opinion.

Buckler will block 11% of the incoming blows
Small shield will block 20%
Medium will block 40%
Large will block 60%
Tower will block 80%

These are all for people who are unskilled with them.  Now I can use a medium shield and block 65% of shots easily with my skill level (it took me over 6 years to get that good) and with my large shields I block closer to 90%.

I know that shields can block, but IRL your shield takes alot of damage.  You as well need to be incredibly strong to use it effecietly.  I think it should be tied to your endurance.  If you run out of energy you will lose 66% of the effectiveness.  Try to hold up a 10 pound weight with a square arm as a shield for 10 minutes straight and tell me that your medium shield will not wear on you.  

I like the idea of this... it is simple.  If it gets past your percentile shield block they have the chance to hit normally.  This keeps it simple.  I think this would work best and keep it realistic.

As well you could level your shield, bashing is one of my favorite techniques.  Most guys hate when I bash them cause they do not know how to defend against it yet.

if a player is using 2 swords i think that they have to train right/left hand skills, because surely everyone in Yliakum isnt dominate in both hands. if they are using sword and shield they need to decide what item they want to be best with, good at blocking or good at slashing/cutting/stabing ect.

Nero v2: you can just sell it back at a slight loss, but earning 5 tria (I think) back is better than earning back 30 :P

I can agree on this point as well.  I have recently gone lefty as I am dominant in my right hand.  My shield skill was easily cut in half when I started.  But I am now able to fight good enough with it that I am just above Newb level with it (ie newbs don\'t kill me but guys who are a year or more into the sport can).  I am doing it as Lefties have a major advantage in the game.

I am not saying that just anyone could use all the shields.

Strength should play a factor.  As well as endurance (as said before).  There is also the leveling aspect that would help.

I think that if this idea was implimented correctly that it would be one of the best updates.

As well if flournteener goes agains a buckler fighter, (on equal skill levels) the buckler will die every time.  On same grounds a tower shiled will most often win in the same scenario as more of the body is covered.  Flournteeners have a specific place and if a shield man does not know how to block both blades, they are screwed.

i still like my idea on raising left and right hand skills. At the character creation screen it asks what hand you want to be dominate. And whatever your holding in that hand is always better when held in that hand.

I would like to know from a Development stand, is this a priority?  How hard to impliment it?  My character has no reason to learn magic of any type IC.  But due to the fact that he has no shield protection (and did start with ranks in it) he is almost forced to learn magic.  I would like to know if there is a possibilty of having protection within the next month or so.  If not he may need to get into the healing arts (which in in no way part of the character concept).

Just wondering?  Thanks guys I really appreciate all the work put into this and was amazed at the post Acraig gave about the server probs.  This would only be a perk.  I am not saying \"DO IT NOW!!!\"  Just wonderin.

Because life is complicated :) Why would you put down a book before you fisnish reading it? perhaps a friend just arrived. It may feel like you are tearing yourself away from the book, and the need for completion is great, but that does not mean it is the only thing to do.
