Americans.  However, I am sure that Canadians know a heck of a lot more about American history than Americans know about Canadian history.  Even though we\'re so close to eachother, we\'re culturally very different and this is one of the ways that it manifests.

Americans think that they won the war of 1812.

Americans think that Canadians are Americans and America is really called \"The USA\".  Calling \"The USA\" America can get a negative reaction from a US citizen.

Legal pot, gay marriage, war, and abortion are also social issues we tend to disagree on.

One problem about Canadians is that we tend to take a very \"holyier than thou\" attitude towards things.  When something bad happens down south politically, we tend to go \"Oh, those Americans....\", despite our own flaws.  Many Canadians don\'t know that slavery existed in Canada.  Too many Canadians think that our social system is \"free because it\'s paid for by the government\", when they forget that the government gets it\'s money from Canadians.

But yeah, in terms of history and awareness of it, in highschool I was offered an American history course.  Somehow I doubt that American highschools offer courses dedicated to Canadian history and politics.  It\'s just not the way it works.

We didn\'t win the War of 1812. It was a draw. It was a victory in that it further proved that the USA was a free and sovereign nation.

And you\'re right: America doesn\'t offer Canadian History courses in high school (though they probably do in college). We do get a very nice world overview/global studies course (which included a lot about Canada), but no special course, correct.
Title:
Post by: Karyuu on December 12, 2005, 01:57:52 am
High school education is usually crap unless you\'re in a private institution. The subjects are so general that they seem utterly pointless. It\'s only in colleges and universities that diversity shows itself, where you can take full-length history courses about any one subject, from the Paleolithic Age to one certain specific period in the Medieval. In high school, you just have as many summarized little facts about our world shoved down your throat as quickly as possible, so you can regurgitate them later in tests similar to this one ;)

College classes are the bestest.

!1!! This is what I\'m talking about!

America INVADED Canada, and we drove you back.  We drove you back so far that we burned your white house, forcing you to paint it white!  FURTHER, the only battle the Americans won during the entire war happend AFTER the peace treaties were signed!  And you call that a draw?
Title:
Post by: Cha0s on December 12, 2005, 02:12:15 am
That\'s wrong, actually. First of all, the war of 1812 was between Great Britain and the United States. Canada was a part of Great Britain and only a part of the war. In addition, after burning the barely-a-city Washington, D.C. the British/Canadian forces were crushed at Lake Champlain and Baltimore. That\'s when they agreed to call it a draw. If they had been pressing on to victory, they wouldn\'t have done that would they have? And while New Orleans was after the war, it was quite a decisive victory. So don\'t say it wasn\'t a draw... They wouldn\'t have agreed to a status quo treaty if they really had much of an advantage.

It wasn\'t about \"pressing on to Victory\".  America invaded Canada, thinking to \"liberate\" us from the British!  And it\'s not the only time America invaded Canada and was defeated.  They sent troops up here after the revolutionary war, which died on the way due to exposure.  A second wave invaded Montreal to win over the French, and was crushed.  A third wave was repulsed in 1812.

Hmm If thats true i didnt even know about it.. though no offense I dont care about Canadian history and any of my American history classes obviously didnt add that info.  I focus more on the middle ages :)... And are you trying to say it was a victory for Canada?

True, but the way that Americans make fun of Canadians is also a part of the joke.  A Canadian might joke about an American being reactionary, absolutist, and ethnocentric, while Americans joke about Canadians with things like \"Oh, those silly Canadians and their igloos.  They should get an army.\"

The draught is good stuff...I had the extra stout for the first time when I was 13...when it was still brewed in dublin.....damn that stuff was strong.  I was so disappointed when I bought a 6 pack of the extra stout this past summer and it tasted like a dark budweiser....blasphemy!  I believe Labatt brews it now.

Draught on tap rules though.  And if you have a taste for wheat ales, try a black and blue sometime (like a black and tan but with blueberry wheat ale instead of bass ale).

Oh, did I mention I like beer?

Uhm, might I add that Belgium is one of the most known countries in the world for beer? :D Hey, there\'s not much we\'re known for, so I\'m proud of it okay? :D
I don\'t like Heineken at all, to me it\'s like water with a tiny bit of beer taste..And Bavaria...Bweeh sometimes :D Guinness is LOVE by the way, been to Ireland and been drinking Guinness ever since.

I think the senator question got me.  It used to be unlimited, but I just haven\'t heard if they imposed limitations like they did on the president(what a mistake that was!).  Now I gotta read all these posts to see what interesting discussion has been wrought here.

Edited for commentary:

Beer?! That is your interesting discussion?  You are discussing your favorite beer?  How about discussing whether to eat Chunky Soup with a fork or a spoon?

Disclaimer:  I am joking!  You are also not allowed to disclaim my disclaimer, I disclaim that too.   :D

Um but ofcourse beer is cheap here. Because Belgium is beer. So I guess our beer will cost more in other countries because of the import costs and stuff.

Hmm my personal preference is Adnams Broadside followed by Speckled Hen and Caffreys and none of these foreign lager beers :)

Adnams Broadside is something I just learned about last week in UK. Reminds me Samuel Adams I\'m used to drink when in US ;)

I personally like Ringnes you get in Norway; draft, not bottled.

with REAL beer I meant to say that I don\'t see heineken as real. Oh wait, I don\'t see it as beer at all, more like water. With beertaste. And no matter how much Heineken I drink...The only thing it gets me is that I have to run to the toilet every 20 minutes. Well yeah. I don\'t like it. So REAL beer...nearly every beer is real compared to Heineken, imho. No need to get offended now, anyone, it\'s my opinion

Amen. :)

Anything but heineken real beer? I don\'t know if I\'d give those \'yellow fizzy beers\' like bud and coors that kind of credit.

I favor stouts, porters and lagers myself.  Wheat ales are great too.

One of my favorites, though I\'m not sure what category of beer it fits into, is Arrogant Bastard Ale.  It\'s made at a small brewery in California.  It comes in 22 oz bottles and is 7.2% ABV.  It\'s like 3 beers in one and has a really distinct taste. http://www.arrogantbastard.com/

Living near Boston, MA, I\'ve of course been to the Samuel Adams brewery.  Great beer.  They let us sample this one-time-run of what they called the 3 Weiss Men.  9% ABV...woooooo, only 2 dollars for the tour and got a good buzz along the way.  Now THAT is money well spent.

Sam Adams has some european-style beers like their Belgian Cranberry Lambic, Cream Stout which uses English hops, the list goes on....I just don\'t feel like going through all my empties to list them all here.

you are all brainwashed people.. there\'s only one real beer:

Tuborg Gr?n on glassbottle!

Stouts, ales, belgish/wtb-irish mud and liquids like heineken, budweiser and guiness is competing on taste with the stuff that i can project from my large intestine.

...Americans... Well, we\'re like that.  We have a serious superiority complex when it comes to the rest of the world, on the off chance that you can find one of us that is aware that passing further east than the east coast, south of Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and California, north of Canada and Alaska or west of Hawaii will not cause you to drop off the face of the earth.  I think the best introspective views of Americans I\'ve seen are the Chuck Norris movies, not counting the Walker Movie, and Team America (yes I\'m serious and no I don\'t like it).  There are some others, including the Star Wars sexology (hexology?) that describe us pretty well too. (So this is the way the Republic dies, with a cheer.-Padme Amidalla, or at least that\'s pretty close to what she said.)
