When we get further in to the game, can I build a school and call it Link\'s School of Grammar and Spelling and if people run around saying stuff like \"I r kill u plz now n00b!\" they will be sent to my school and I will dicipline them properly.
-
I really think that\'s a good idea, Link! At least, that\'d probably scare off most of them \"I r kill u plz now n00b!\" people. :D So you do that, and keep the world free from those scum!
-
yr i agree cept it wastes time writin da correct spellin 4 everythin. wot if my friend was runnin into da woods towards a big monster? i wudnt sit ther and say wait!, id say w8, this is esspecially relavent to those of us that cant type with two hands.
-
eye wunder if diss applyeis 2 just the ritten wurd or also 2 speaking wurd toooo..??!

Good typers type words that are spelled correctly faster than shortcuts. This is so because they are used to typing spelled out words and will take a while to figure out where the numbers are when they\'re about to type a message with numbers after letters to make words. Also, saying stuff with numbers combined with letters will make other players stop in their tracks, scratch their heads, and attempt to decipher your message.
About the school of Spelling and Grammer.... Like Gronomist said, it only takes someone like you running a school to discipline most newbies, running around saying \"I r kill u plz now n00b!\" But what\'s the chance that the newbies who run into your school don\'t pay any attention to you, or block you? ?( Or do you have a secret plan to prevent that...?
-
i think that freak show in his sig is holding the secret plan right now. :P
-
At first I thought this was more tounge in cheek.
If we are serious here, then I hope we can define
ourselves fairly early on if this is to be more of an
accepting atmosphere or the dictitorial efforts of a few.
On the forums i suppose blasting away is unavoidable
byproduct of peeps being peeps,
but game side of the server, I think it might be considered harrasement in some circles.
Maybe my spelling and grammer is roleplay and maybe it is not. Besides I havent the time to learn the finer points of Old English anyway.

Amazingly enough, that idea is fairly good, bravo Sir.Link.
If people want reality, this is a perfect way to provide for that.
Good idea, but I know some people that would be against that, like, let\'s say...meket.
-
I don\'t mind some misspellings but it gets mighty old mighty quick if its all a person will \"speak\" in.
I\'m sure this is tongue in cheek but if I had this available in game I would send \"1 Agr3 n00b\" to Link\'s school as soon as he begged \"Give m3 mon3 plz,I r luvs u!\"
ThenI could come and watch Link
discipline them properly
Mwahahaa
-
I think the fact that Link would have control over them would make most people start talking right WITHOUT the school :P
-
the fact is, if i wanna use a shortcut, i will. It doesnt mean that i cant spell it right or i dunno where the keys are. It simply saves a lotta time for us 1 handed typers who simply cannot type with two hands. If shortening words is wrong then shudnt using abbreviations like ffs and wtf be disallowed??
-
I use abbreviations all the time but I try to keep them to a minimum on posting boards. You have all the time in the world to type a message out here plus an edit function so there is no reason you can\'t spell things out.
I actually learned to type two handed while playing EQ, I dont type the \"correct way\" but I get the job done. Point is you can learn and you can learn quick its not hard.
-
Ah, well people using shortcuts in their posts won\'t make me secretly give their names to Link to discipline. Only to people who usually don\'t use correct grammar I will send off to Link\'s school. If they use shortcuts every once in a while, then I\'m okay. If people always use shortcuts, things get hard to read and I will help send them off to Link\'s School of Grammar. Although it would be interesting to see how Link would teach people grammar...
Lets see here, shortcuts like \'IMO\' are fine and things like \"I r kill u plz now n00b!\" are not.

I do hope this thread gets much longer.
It will be nice to see the personal views before
the game starts.
However, if such is not to be, then if by chance we
happen to meet in game and decide to group, please tell me then if my grammer is not up to your standards.
As it happens in real life, so it is in the game. I just dont have the time to deal with perfection nor superiority.

There\'s nothing wrong if you shorten words every now and then, only if you talk like that the whole time...it gets annoying if your not used to it, then you dont know what the hell their talking about :)
-
If you can\'t type without shortcuts maybe you should attend a typing class or if you are in one, then pay attention. Most schools have required you to attend a typing class for many years, since before we even had personal computers.
-
or if you talk like that you can just get Squelched. like certain words trigger it. Or you can just cut off their tongues and they cant talk. eventually not talking will drive them mad, they will eat themselves and that will be the end of that problem. until they make a new character
-
Or do like alot of Linux programs do to discourage lamers, when you say something like that, such as ppl, it says people instead.
-
Actually Link wouldnt that make it easier to type in gobbilty guk if the game fixes it for you? I thought this was a joke idea anyway...
-
That gets annoying
I say we just stick them all in a hole somewhere and forget they exist
-
It was a joke, and your right, Having shortcuts would encourage it.
Edit: Does anyone know what I said was a joke?
-
i think the idea of a school for the grammatically impared is a good idea, bravo Link
-
I actually LIKE this idea.
Common net slang tho (like THO, for instance) and other things could be automatically changed to the correct spelling.
EG:. \"And tho they the ppl wanted to hlp...\"
-- \"And though they, the people, wanted to help...\"
But that Net Number stuff needs to be filtered out.
If I see someone saying \" 1337!\" while I am playing, it kills the mood. No one is saying you have to walk around talking like Hamlet, but good god, do you NEED to use net slang?? It actually takes LONGER to type that stuff...!
I say we make his school idea a real thing. They get a few warnings, and if they disobey, they get thrown into his school, where a bot called \"Link\" won\'t let them leave until they have taken a typing lesson, and successfully used the long version of their icky nasty slanguage!
LOL just incorperate MS word directly into the game engine. LMFAO.
--------------------
Thats another thing: LOL and LMFAO and things like that should be changed to either a character sound of laughter, or the words *Laughs Heartily*
-
I\'m going to delurk here and say that I am so glad to have found you all! My biggest problem with all the MMORPGs that I\'ve seen (and many message boards/chat rooms too) is the complete hash they make of the language. I don\'t mind an occasional abbreviation for the sake of speed but the numbers thing has been driving me crazy.
Bravo Link! Keep it up!
~Lirain~
-
I say the admins (and link) get the Quake 3 host\'s ability, where the player is publicly for being stupid. Now, i think we should keep link as far away from being the judge on stupid as possible ;-) , but it might be a fun idea.
-
If they can\'t type without the numbers and alot of the abbreiviations, then they should look into some typing classes. Stuff like brb, bbl, and lol are OK, but, ppl? l8r? and so on. Well that takes longer to type then it would normally. And please, please!!!! Use atleast some punctuation.
-
I completely agree. I find it mildly inconsiderate that one person can\'t take the time to make their thoughts coherent and legible, forcing many others to stumble while attempting to decipher the original message.
It tks mch lngr 2 dcifer & rd this 1 line of txt thn it wz 2 rd the ^^ .
On the other hand, I have a friend that is mildly dyslexic. No matter how hard he tries, his words end up a bit muddled, so I have grown more tolerant of freeform typing. It\'s his internet too. But, I always appreciate the effort!
-
I completely disagree with this. This is bashing on someone just because they speak different than you and you don\'t like it, which is being prejudice. Also, it is an insult to thier intelligence to become slaves in link\'s school. It really isn\'t that big of a problem. If you come accross someone who does speak like that you can politely say: sorry i didn\'t understand that, can you please speak more clearly. I\'m sure if you ask nicely they will. Besides, this rule will be nearly impossible to enforce and people are sure to rebell against this overabusiveness.
-
No, they should either speak proper english, or speak some other language.
-
In response to Link:
Many people are not brought speaking proper english. It is not their fault and nothing shoud be held against them for it. It does not give you the right to think you are better or more intelligent than them or say \"speak like us or don\'t speak.\"
This is very similar to racism and could be raised to a new form of discrimination. People in the past thought others were inferior because they looked different than the majority of people, which also cannot helped. In actuality, the people who thought this were just narrow minded and ignorant.
People that speak different than us should be obused because we don\'t like it? hmmmm... sounds like discrimination to me
If you don\'t like the way someone speaks it keep it to yourself
-
Monocle judging by your response you have no idea what it is that Link is actually talking about. Especially considering his post directly before yours.
He is not complaining about those people for whom English is a second language he is complaing about those who choose to be lazy about it. He means people who use abbreviations where they are unnecessary and just plain nonsensical.
For the most part I agree with him although I do not mind the occasional \'d00dspeak\'.
-
How are we going to know the people who are lazy about the language or just talk with slang? I\'m not talking about people that know english as a second language either, I\'m talking about people who were up brought to use slang and weren\'t tought proper spelling. Someone that says \"dat is coo\" should be brought to link\'s school and abused? What if they just talk and write like that?
Link said:
No, they should either speak proper english, or speak some other language.
Which applies to the above case too. Maybe he should be clearer on exactly what he means, but saying speak proper english, spell correctly or be abused doesn\'t just include people who are lazy.
-
Ah.. interesting topic here..
I\'d have to say.. in a roleplaying game.. typing like that would be very confusing and annoying. For the most part, the improper typing/spelling/what-not has not really been this bad for very long(not like 10years or anything), so I\'d say that 85% of the people who talk like that have picked it up since they\'ve gotten online. And, no offence, but if you had to take a GED or something of the sort, and if you had to type it up, and you spelled like that.. you\'d be screwed.
I\'m not really bothered by most, but the stuff that is done purposely, really gets on my nerves, and yes, I will/do ignore everything those people say. lol I do use abbreviations sometimes.. I will say \'ppl\' and \'tho\' and others which I can\'t think of right now.
Oh! But what REALLY gets me, is when people finish every sentence with words that have no bloody meaning what-so-EVER!! But anywho..(and wait, I correct myself, they aren\'t really words!)
A school to teach them in would be groovy. And I guess to some, learning would actually be a punishment. ;)
(And this post was long, but oh well! :) I don\'t post much on here.. so there. :P)
-
People use shortcuts all the time, and it does not mean they are lazy. Sometimes its a matter of conservaing space and time. What do you think contractions and pronouns are?
if you can understand: y r u going to the store?
why shouldn\'t it be used? or saying \"it\" instead of \"cabbage patch top hat\".
We are not writting formal papers and because someones uses shortcuts are lazy. I could probably dig up a lot of shortcuts used by the people who said they said they hate shortcuts.
For instance, look at the shortcuts the admin vengeance and other people used on this thread: http://www.planeshift3d.com/forum/thread.php?threadid=2187&boardid=13&styleid=2.
I wouldn\'t consider them lazy. If people use a lot of shortcuts you can\'t understand them just ignore them or ask them to repeat more clearly what they are saying. Abusivness in this case is completly unnecessary.
-
Something tells me this is a difference of opinion that will remain just that. Of course the whole grammer school concept is a joke reflecting the frustrations of those who would appreciate more effort.
I myself do not mind th occasional shortcut (Im repeating myself again...) but it gets irritating when it proves to be a constant. When it comes to saving time, well in posting boards at least you have plenty of time.
Occacionally shortcuts can be \'cute\' if you will but again only up to a point. Where that point lies is also a varied matter of opinion.
As for someone never having learned decent grammer, well there\'s no time like the present to learn ;)
-
I remember this IMVironment on Yahoo(some of ya may know of it).. it\'s the \"Verizon Wireless\" and it has a \"transl8\" option.. I played with it once with a friend until I couldn\'t breathe and was in tears from laughing. If you have Yahoo messenger, and haven\'t seen it, you should.
I have no problem with abbreviations/shortcuts, but there has got to be a limit somewhere. lol

- well said Fiere

I think the resolution here is everyone be considerate of each other. If you use language you think is questionable whether on not people will understand it don\'t use it. We don\'t want to decode ancient Hieroglyphs made by senor cabbage patches <----(insult when used in this case).
\"Indeed, old chum\" -? :baby: <----
-
I didn\'t read all of what was posted, but most of it, and I noticed you said something about saving time? Well any good typist will tell you that not only does it take longer to type those letters, it might be about the same if you do it alot, then that brings up the fact that if you get used to doing it you will do it on formal letters. But It saves no time if you are a half way decent typist and it\'s a good habit to know how to type, so maybe you should go take some typing classes.
-
If its about typing fast, then just make some shortcuts like in (god I hate myself for saying this) Counter-Strike. LOL will be the most common thing, an auto change of lol to:
Laughs loudly
would be very nice. the numbers are so stupid, I say we have a prison, called \"the School of bad grammer and other obscene behaviour\" where they get tourtured for some days and loose all their money. Will there be Criminal records, if there will, a stay at the grammar school should be added to the fools record, preventing them from getting good jobs.
-
That might be just a bit too harsh, some people will mess up while typing, some people just need to learn. Only consistent \"Kewl D00dz\" should be punished.
Someone that says \"dat is coo\" should be brought to link\'s school and abused? What if they just talk and write like that?
Somebody who writes like that in a ROLEPLAYING game deserves to be thrown to a dragon/rancor/incinerator. On a chat board, OK. On a forum only very rarely (it\'s still a pain to read, but if your dyslectic or something, OK) in a ROLEPLAYING game, NO MOTHERF***ING WAY!!! It completely ruins the atmosphere. Learn to type or don\'t play! Some games require a monthly fee, others require you to learn to type properly, which would you rather? Also if somebody regularly writes dat iz vry Kewl u d00dz and n00bz in real life, then they need to visit a mental hospital.
-
Link, you are wrong about how good typists have to think about using shortcuts. There is no way you can prove that. Just because you do, does not all good typers do. I can type brb, without thinking about, when i writing informally. I don\'t pause when i use something such as \"brb\", or \"lol\". And it does save me time when i use them. I know i can write \"brb\" faster than i can write be right back. A good typist can hit keys faster in any order because they have memorized the keyboard so well. So a typer, no matter what speed (mathematicall , the speed of the typer has no effect), will always type 3 letters faster than sixteen. Also, i know people that are good typers and use shortcuts online.
When I\'m writing a paper i can type without shortcuts and without thinking too. My usage of shortcuts has no effect on the speed I write formal papers at.
I have no problem if somebody does not type with proper Engish in a role playing game. I never foget that i am playing with people in my time, in a fake, polygonal world. Video games are not convincing enough. Also, you have no that common people talked with proper English back then. Most of them were not properly schooled and the English language has evolved greatly since then. Infact, most probably couldn\'t wright. The history gathered was most likely written by the intellicts of that age. It has no effect on my atmosphere.
-
Its more about how they act, not how they type. If someone says \"brb\" or \"lol\" or \"g2g\" it is different than someone typing \"hey d00dz want 2 g2 th cave n fight?\" Shortcuts in my opinion, should only be used:
A)-when they are being chased by a giant fiery dragon and cannot type well or they will die.
B)-when taking a long time to respond would seem awkward or rude.
C)-when on rushed by their parents/schedule to leave the game. Then they can type \"afk\" (whatever that means, I\'ve never known) or something.
\"lol\" is still annoying though, in my opinion. Better to use \"hehe\" or something like that, even if it sounds a little out of place. If you want you can \"emote\".
Example: *Laughs* , *Chuckles* , *Grins* , *Does a happy jig*
Dunno how that would work in a 3D environment though. It would be really neat if you could actually smile or frown.
-
I completely agree with Aruneko!
Those are the appropriate uses for shortcuts!
That face emotion thing is a good idea too. You should put that on the Wish List Board. Maybe you could hit a button to make your guy laugh (with sound) and do a jig(or something along those lines).

1337 to the People.
I have nothing really to add, but seeing now, this thread has evolved into a wide open discussion.
A while back, the PS team said something about selected gameplay(only some people get to play, due to funds, and costs*Whatever did happen to that?*) Anyway, this could be like the \"bar\" test that desided if you will be chosen or not. But yeah,
Abr. = YEAH, they rule.
1337 = :(
-
What a long discussion for a joke.......
-
LoL yeah, I think I made this post when we started racing and I needed some posts.
-
Even as a joke, it\'s brought up an issue that seems to push our buttons pretty well. Part of the idea of an RPG is to create your character for a fantasy world and then live up to your creation. Most GM\'s that I know try hard to encourage their gamers to stay in character. Fact is, I don\'t want to role play a fantasy game with a bunch of people who type like they are trying to be inner city gangsters (whether they are in real life, or not). Going out of one\'s way to type in cryptograms is a pain and hard to decipher. Not to mention being nearly impossible for those of us who don\'t speak English as a first language. In the end it all comes down to individual choice, I know, but I for one would like to see the d00d speak kept to a minimum.
-
Apparently the Team cares some what about it since you can\'t use numbers, or underscores or anything in your name.
-
Well, yes, that\'s all true...but it\'s just a bit odd that a joke gets more views/replies then any of the real ideas on this board (even though all of you turned it into one) :)
-
Would it be a good idea to have a client-side word expansion table? If it expanded your messages automatically, then fewer people would get annoyed at you. (And certain commands could be abbreviated...) On the other hand, it could expand common abbreviations that you hear from others, reducing your own frustration level.

Nobody does. There are perhaps a handful of people in the world who can translate it into contemporary German, and even fewer who can make it intelligible to contemporary English speakers. What you really mean is \"Modern English\" (the language of Shakespeare and the KJV Bible) or \"Middle English\" (the language of medieval times, before the Norman conquest).

Why we all read link threads? Where else can you learn how to show a person that he is stupid without him taking notice of it ;)
