Title: Unofficial WMF file vulnerability fix, is recommended.
Post by: Verrliit on January 04, 2006, 03:50:06 am
The critical WMF file vulnerability, that can be used to take over a Windows machine that only visits an infected website, has an unofficial hotfix that is recommended to be installed, in advance of the official Microsoft release, scheduled for next week.

See article, here (http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid14_gci1155574,00.html).

Download the unofficial hotfix, here (http://www.grc.com/sn/notes-020.htm).

(EDIT:  Official Microsoft fix has been released, five days ahead of the announced date.  The Official fix is here (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/update/bulletins/200601_WMF.mspx).)

Take one, and pass it on.

Moved to Hydlaa Plaza. Come on Verrliit, you know where to post these things ;)

Quite curious, too, as I was just reading about this earlier last night.

Since you are there, Karyuu, do be so kind as to make this a front page sticky for the next week or so?

This being an early fix for the biggest security threat in many years, and all...

We do want to make sure that as many people get to see it as possible, don\'t we?

Of course, considering how everyone immediately notices and reads stickies ;) Stickied threads in the forums are generally only PlaneShift related, but if there is enough support for the idea, I\'ll gladly do it.

*edit* .. \"Front page sticky\"?

That site is down, most likely due to bandwidth overrun.

And Microsoft proves it\'s inadequacy once again. *sighs* Thanks for bringing this to light, though I don\'t think it needs a sticky (it shouldn\'t have much trouble staying on this page for the next few days anyway). And as Karyuu said, no one reads stickies anyway (even one I marked \"READ BEFORE POSTING\" :\\ ).

Stickies are not read, that\'s a fact. Maybe \"DON\'T CLICK\" or \"DON\'T READ\" would be, but no other stickies.

Keeping the thread \"alive\" so that it shows up right after the stickies seems to work the best :)

EDIT:  :D

Just found the following from http://www.f-secure.com/weblog/:

Who wouldn\'t open that file?  :D
