Title: I finally have a good idea!
Post by: Lesaron on December 09, 2002, 04:27:37 pm
I don\'t know if you guys already thought of this, but here goes...

With the coming Holidays and consumption of egg nog, maybe some snow in the nation, we could have seasons/holidays!

In the fall, the trees would be bare, and leaves would cover the ground.
In the winter snow would cover the ground and lakes would freeze over (revealing secret dungeons/items)
I\'ll leave spring and summer to you geniuses at work.

MAYBE- you guys can have holidays with christmas and easter egg hunts.

Yeah, and while we are at it lets make the game 4 times bigger then it really is, changing all the textures every season would be very big.

Snow under ground a strange concept. Even seasons is pushing it.

You are very right, I never thought about that, Where the planeshift world is would most likely always be cold unless near the crystal.

You have a point there, rathma...

Oh well.  I doubt there will be seasons and weather.  At the most, there might be mist, but thats it.

Honestly seasons and holidays aren\'t a bad idea at all. They would simply have to match the Planeshift setting. Doesn\'t the crystal in fact draw its power from the sun above the surface? And perhaps the lake itself could be affected by its source.

I agree that Christmas doesn\'t make sense nor does snow really but after all the various peoples of Yliakum DO worship two gods in particular and it is likely they would have holidays to celebrate various events.

Pehaps it is an idea best left for far later in development but I think they are a good start.

eh i dont think egg nog isnt that bad of an idea, a bar could sell them when the owner feels like it, and maybe decorate the house/bar to your holiday likings

...why is snow so insane? im not saying i want it implemented, but if there\'s water and rain, there could be snow...dont see why it COULDNT happen, because it could

maybe if your far away from the crystal, there can be ice and snow, not seasons or anything but its ALWAYS like that...because, yes you guessed it, water freezes

And if they put in christmas, they would have to put all the other religions holidays in.

Christmas doesn\'t make sense in Planeshift, I don\'t think its even based on Earth. I could see something Christmas-like, like Talad Day or The Lament of Laanx or some such thing, and something eggnog like, or heck Im sure Pterasaur eggs would make plenty of it ;)

Snow is a form of precipitation from condensation so it is a possibility but that is up to the Devs and I haven\'t seen any comment as such yet. To my knowledge one of the major results of condensation in a cave is stalagtites and stalactites, Yliakum itself being a giant stalactite.

The point is its a fantasy world not quite like our own and a fantasy culture so things would be different.

Everything in an mmorpg doesnt have to make sense :P I think there are certain things that would be better left unexplained and mysterious. like the weather for example :)
Title: ya i guess ur rite...

o ya....
i guess christmas is a bad idea considering that this world is different from ours.
and since all of you guys hate egg nog... could we make up our own drinks/potions/balms?

Weather does not make sense because there are no clouds.  If you haven\'t noticed, precipitation comes from the sky; and there is none in Planeshift.

I think there should be no real holidays, but there should be a holiday where you give a present to all your friends.  That would be a really good morale-booster. :D

That holiday should not be religious so everyone can participate.

But there should be other holidays for religion, that involve rituals or something.  Say, on some holiday, people go and hunt in a specific cave for something, and then they eat it.  Well, maybe not.

But you get the point.

Technically speaking there could be weather in Planeshift.
Keep in mind that the lower levels are alomost always completely submerged with water,
the crystal creates heat,
heat evaporates the water and the water makes, thats right clouds.
Viola rain. =)

I believe I should get more specific.

Seasons is not the same as weather.  I have been told there are some buildings so large they create their own small little weather systems inside them.  Like the building that held the Appollo rockets.  It has been known to rain in there.
However,  weather underground is an interesting topic.  You can have all kinds of crazy things.  Suppose the roof had a leak somewhere.  You might have an area with continuous rain.  If the place is very deep there would have to be some mechanism for getting the water out of it.  However, solid rock walls and ceilings would hold in a lot more heat than the outdoors does.  If you look up on a starry night you see all of the heat going to space. To create monstrous weather systems like large thunderheads or hurricanes requires a lot of  differentiating heat.  It takes a lot of energy to feed to them.  So it would make sense that it might rain there but the really big stuff requires more space.  As for major weather changes, say winter climate versus summer, it would be difficult to conceive of a mechanism that could dissipate that kind of heat through rock to create snow.

I hope this explains my point of view.

I agree with whats his face, that guy who said lets keep PlaneShift mysterious. I don\'t think we need to figure out if the crystal makes heat and what not, i\'d stick with PlaneShift being mysterious. Also, I think a cool magic spell to learn is invisibilty if they have not made it yet. I hope this is the wish list i am saying this under, or else i must seem pretty stupid. Hehehehe not as bad as that egg nogg kid, lol just joking lesaron, my ideas are worse then yours  :P .

Mysterious is nice but the fact its under ground isn\'t mysterious. It it more interesting to me to think of it as a total underground experience rather than trying to cram the above ground experience into a form that does not fit. A Plane Shift Holiday is a super concept. However we must make one up that works under ground.
