Title: Pronouncing your name....
Post by: Dylia on January 09, 2006, 06:47:56 pm
So here is the story....
1) Dylia gets convinced by Zorbels to download skype
2)Dylia downloads skype and takes two months to get a mic XD
3)Dylia finally gets mic and a few other players on skype

The most common question.... \"Dylia how do I say your name?\"
I think \"for freaksakes I don\'t know\" but then try anyways
So I thinks its pronounced as follows: die-la  [Edit Add] or as Drey pointed out I said it like: du (as in duck) lie-la [End Edit]
I know it doesn\'t make sense but whatever

So......... now the REAL question :D

How do you pronounce your name? >.>

that\'s how I pronounce your name when I see you about...

Snoin = Snow-in.  I came up with it because I was looking at my Scion mousepad (I drive a Scion tC) and I was eating sno-caps when I made my character...

*edit* Turns out I always pronounced \"Dylia\" Bebel\'s way, too. Funky.

Mine might be a bit non-intuitive for english speaking people:

\"Hee-tahn-kree-ahs\" with the accent on the second syllable

Not that I really mind if people pronounce it somewhat different.

I would pronounce \"Dylia\" probably that way:

Dy... -- with the \"y\" like in \"my-stery\"
...li (berty) - a

BTW: I have Skype too. But be warned, I\'m a native german, my written english is better...
__

What, my name? \"Gag\" - pretty obvious, maybe a little towards an open \"a\" like in \"after\".

My current conclusion is that people tend to pronounce their fantasy game names in a way how they would be pronounced in Latin / German / Scandinavian languages :)

Seems like I nearly messed it up, I always pronounced your name like \"car-you\" (without a recognizable pause between the syllables). ;) That seemed to be the easiest and shortest way to pronounce it.

But well, I\'m sure you want to know how my name is prononced. Frankly, I never really thought about it, as long as the spelling is correct. So I guess it\'s something like:

Tho-ro-na-dor

i.e. the first syllable like in \"though\", the second like the beginning of \"road\", third one like \"nah\" (sometimes also a bit like \"ney\", but don\'t mess it up ;)), and the last one like the word \"door\".
That\'s it, basically. If that is to difficult, just say \"Thor\", the short form of my name which some people in my guild like to use, mainly because they are unsure how to spell the rest of it. :P

I would rather say they pronoune it the way how they do it in their native language, but that is only my personal opinion. Maybe because i don\'t think of my name being pronounced in Latin / German / Scandinavian =P

Dylia would be just Dy-lia for me ;)
Hehe, and for me \"y\' is vowel what I know in eglish isn\'t :P Correct me if i messed somethink.

Sang-wa

Sang, with a closed \"a.\"
Wa as in \"war.\"

Oh? Some of you actually thought it was pronounce Go-d?
Go, with an open O

So, Jjairr. First off, the extra J and R do nothing. Nothing at all! Except add fun fancy decoration. I mean, Jjairr is just so much kewler lookin\' than Jair. Seriously.

One syllable. Hard J. Rhymes with \"hair\", \"stare\", \"lair\", and \"glare\".

Jjairr! \\O/

My name was intended to be pronounced Gin-keen\' with the emphasis on the \"keen\" part so that it drew aout a bit.

But Dylia, which incidentally is pronounced dial\' - ya where I come from and so she shall so be called in Skype or wherever   forever, calls me jing\'-kin as in rhymes with drinkin\'.    So I have accepted that as the true pronunciation of my name.

Dial\'-ya and Jing\'-kin   forever

meh, all yous Westerners with your spellings and pronounciations... Back here, we have a \"read as it has been written\" rule, without any modifications.
But that don\'t apply to my name, no.

Shooree= the \"Shoo\" is just like the exclamation you use for shooing that pesky cat, and the accented \"ree\" is like in \"REhab\".

@Jjairr: :O you just destroyed a  boy\'s world, young lady! I thought I was good with linguistics... :(

There\'s but one god, Cador\'is. And that\'s me, the monkey god everyone worships.

Here\'s how you mortals must pronounce my glorious name:

Moon-key Gau-d
Moon as in... the moon;
Key, like the the thing most people use to open locks;
Gau as in the Final Fantasy 3 (or 6) character;
D as in Dohmygodsangwaowns.

or

Cq-ktr-xg
As in, \"I\'m bored and have little to do before going off to school.\"

Goland McCray

Gall (With a hard G, rhymes with mall or all)
Lend (Rhymes with bend and tend)
Mick (Rhymes with Lick and Pick)
Cray (Sounds like the first syllable of crayon, rhymes with day and bay)

I pronounce it more with an irish or scottish accent than anything.  When I talk naturally I usually have a New England accent (Car = Cah, Quarter = Kwah tah, Coffee = Cawh fee).  Some people like it, Some people hate it.  My accent gets a lot worse when I get upset.

Dylia grins and sings:
Mississippi in the middle of a dry spell
Jimmy Rogers on the Victrola up high
Mama\'s dancin\' with baby on her shoulder
The sun is settin\' like molasses in the sky
The boy could sing, knew how to move, everything
Always wanting more, he\'d leave you longing for

Chorus:
Black velvet and that little boy\'s smile
Black velvet with that slow southern style
A new religion that\'ll bring ya to your knees
Black velvet if you please

Up in Memphis the music\'s like a heatwave
White lightening, bound to drive you wild
Mama\'s baby\'s in the heart of every school girl
\"Love me tender\" leaves \'em cryin\' in the aisle
The way he moved, it was a sin, so sweet and true
Always wanting more, he\'d leave you longing for

chorus

Every word of every song that he sang was for you
In a flash he was gone, it happened so soon, what could
you do?

(Solo)

chorus repeats 2x

If you please, if you please, if you please

Dylia giggles at Ahlana

Ral as in Rally (thanks Dylia)

I thought for a while it was more like Ral-us...but I think Ral-iss is better.  Just don\'t accent that second syllable and it\'ll sound right.

Iridena, I'd been seeing yours as Eer-ih-deen-uh.

Well, as for the english pronounciation, I think people do call me:

Wrong-gahr Elle-ny

But I usually pronounce it:

Rrong-gar Eh-laah-ny

I would answer to both though :flowers:

But surely it's either Elm-eye or it's Ell-my (Ell as in fell, and my as in try)?

Might as well throw mine in as well, since at least IRL I've heard a lot of mispronounciations...

Kieve = "Key-vh"

Not to be confused with Kiev (city in the Ukraine) which I understand is "Ky-ehv"

...and anyone who feels like making a Chicken Kiev joke - don't bother, I've heard them all.

Anarkia is pronounced like... An - arr - ki - a. "An" is said like the name Ann, "arr" like a pirate with a small roll of the R (not always said like that, as it's barely noticeable), and "ki-a" like the automobile. Her last name is obvious: Shade - claw

Ain't that awesome.

Xor - dan

Hard eh? :P

I always said Zor-Dan...

steuben viscosa: stoo\'-ben vis (like fish but without the \'h\') co (long \'o\') saw

tovera: toe vear raw, should really bring her out more.

I always thought it was more like  St-eh-Bun :P

Anyways the name Earl is obviously taken obviously... So my character does not have earl in his name...

People on the forums always call me earl... but In my name Earl is a title! :P

Well here is Listbard

List - (like a List of stuff)

Bard - (like a Bard who sings tales of brave warriors.)

And then you get Listbard

Opeitus Solorin

Oh-pay-it-us   Soh-lor-in

I tried for a bit of a greek name, since he follows a loosely hermetic philosophy with some of aristotle's ideas of substances.

Well I made an attempt to read all 12 pages of this post and I failed.   :P

To answer the original question (if there was one), I would have pronounced it "di-lee-uh", although I could see "die-lee-uh" (accent on the second syllable in both of those).

As for my name, I have always pronounced it (in my head at least) "Fal-door" (not "Fall-door"), but as I will likely never hear anyone else pronounce it, I don't really care how it sounds in your head.   ;D

Sil - eh - ver

Post by: Uldics on May 31, 2008, 02:14:56 pm
hehe, this is quite ridiculous. but not that anyone involved in the game would be reason for that. languages have grown wrong, i should say.
The written language has moved away for being a notation or explanation of the sound, as it was in beginning. so the only way out is choosing your mothers language to be one, that does not differ in written and spelled stuff. like spanish, but definately not english. uldics (not UL like Al Gore, not DIC like dice, not uldics like how do i spell it).

ps. am i talking nonsence? no. remember the tower of babel.

Lin-dar ['Lin' like 'linen' and 'dar' like as in, 'dark']
