Title: only one hitpoint?

Why do newbies have less than 1.5 hitpoints? I was fighting a rat and it did 1.5 damage and killed me. Also a problem with Carkerases. You know, those little lizard things in the DR? In short, CAN\'T WE AT LEAST HAVE TEN LIFE POINTS?
