I create this thread beacuse I want that all the people who is using Linux Ati drivers post here their problems so the planeshift\'s programmers can find and fix the problems easier.
My problem is that i cant see any text.
PD: Forgive my bad english, it\'s not my native language.
-
Flush, have you searched through the forum? There has been people with similar problem and they have solved it somehow.
You might want to check that?
-
There has been people with similar problem and they have solved it somehow.
I\'m very interested in the solution to this problem. There\'s also a recent thread where several people mention this problem... So far I haven\'t found the solution by searching, maybe you can give us a small hint about search terms? ;)
Thanks,
Oliver
-
I can\'t find where is the problem solved. There is another thread thata about this problem, but this is not solver.
-
I remember a thread, and I can\'t find it.
But I found this one, http://planeshift.oodlz.com/wbboard/thread.php?threadid=12119&boardid=33&sid=09f14e40eaaf9532ca130ae3e0e724ec
maybe you can go through it with some luck...
-
As I can see, it seems that the problem is no solved. The only solution in that thread is to replace the glwindow.dll but this is a window solution and apears not to works with all the people. Oliver I think that you and me will never play this Game :-(
-
Which version of the drivers do you have?
Maybe it is worthy to try to go back in time and see if there is a driver that was working?
-
I have the last version of Ati fglrx drivers. It\'s works very well with another games, like enemy territory or tuxracer. Perhaps it\'s solves changing the crystal space configuration?
-
Have you tried using older drivers? E.g. uninstall latest one and install some previous version?
-
No I did\'nt try. Is very hard to install an older driver and strongly not recomended, because can left you without Xwindows. I really think that a configuration option can be the solution.
-
AryHann, installing an older ATI driver seems quite dangerous to me, as I have no clue what it will change on the system... ATIs Linux drivers bring the performance but also the problems from their windows counterparts to Linux :/
But I did some experiments with the X.org driver (called radeon), and with that driver it works! It also works with indirect rendering (but too slow to play, of course). Btw. I only tested whether pssetup showed fonts, didn\'t test the rest of the game...
Replacing the ATI driver with the xorg driver is not really an option (it supports 3d only on the Radeon 9200 and older, and has some other flaws). Btw. I use fglrx 8.20.08 ... flush, did you already install the 8.21.7 driver?
And the PS config options don\'t seem to offer a solution (so far I fiddled with the cfg files in the main directory (planeshift.cfg etc.) and with some files in /data/config/... (mainly r3dopengl.cfg and freetype.cfg), but without success. Does anyone have an idea what other options might be relevant? Or how to debug this?
Oliver I think that you and me will never play this Game :-(
Thing is, I _did_ play the game already (according to the logs, last time that was in Sept. 2005). I suppose at that time I had the 8.14.13 driver installed. But going back to that release would probably not work for me anyway, as it would most probably not build on kernel 2.6.15 :(

Sorry, I have just Windows and I was giving you my experience based on ATI + PS.
Of course, my experience is limited therefore I have learnt something new also this time, and I apologize for that.
Anyway, sometimes some driver has resulted to not be perfectly compatible therefore I was suggesting some previous version.
-
Thanks for your effort anyway, AryHann!
Just installed PS 0.3.10, and it shows exactly the same error (ie. no texts at all). So it really seems to be the ATI driver... That\'s sad, as ATI doesn\'t seem to fix such special bugs often (only when they affect a wide-spread game) :/
Thanks,
Oliver

I use de 8.19 driver version for my Ati mobility Radeon 9000. I use Xfree, not Xorg. This version works very well, but I cannot change the screen resolution dinamically. ?the game can\'t be configured without any effect?. If it\'s possible, I\'m sure that then the game must works. Another Idea, ?Do you know another game that use crystal Space so I can determine certainly if the problem is in the driver?
-
I have seen all the threads of this forums where this problem appears (A lot of threads!!). Many of then has not solution. Others says \"Read this thread\" and hava a link to an older thread that tells a window solution about keeping and older version of a .dll before updating. Obviusly this doesn\'t works with linux users. I think that our error is different, because it only happens with Ati\'s graphics card.
I olso tryed to change the font configuaration in pssetup.cfg but , it appears that the line that referes to the font file (by default arial.ttf) does\'nt do anything, because I changed it to an false filename (I think it was \'adsfasd.ttf\') and i got no erro r running pssetup. No new error at least, because I saw that the pssetup returns an skin error about apps.zip or something like that(I\' am working now, not in home so I can\'t see the error now).
Now I have somo questions.
?Perhaps its only a font Problem?
?The last line of pssetup.cfg ist useless?
-
Check the xml file for the pssetup main window data/config/setupwindow.xml. Here you see that every widget has its own font. The line in pssetup.cfg defines the default font in case none was given in the setupwindow.xml file.
-
Just for the record, the problem is apparently still not solved in the newest ATI fglrx driver (8.21.7) - I just installed it, and there\'s still no text.
So it looks like the error was introduced in fglrx 8.16.20, 8.18.6, 8.18.8 or 8.19.10 .

Let\'s face it, ATI drivers don\'t run too good on Linux, especially in games (no only Planeshift). But... I\'ve read somewhere (don\'t know exactly), that there\'s a project or something, that combines ATI drivers with -here I forgot what, probably some other, not ATI, drivers - and things look OK.
-
Ok, I\'m new to planeshift - well, kinda.. been a while since I played.
I was having the same issues as everyone else with ATI drivers and no text - someone mentioned trying other games that use crystalspace - I came accross a stupid game http://blocks3d.sourceforge.net/ - Same issue - no text - and since this hasn\'t been updated since 2003 and is a bin, it would appear to me it\'s in the ATI drivers.
The game has the ability to change to software rendering - it worked fine, interestingly enough there was background as well which I was unaware of prior.
The ATI website does talk about an open source DRI driver from http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/ -- I have not yet tested it.
Sending a Ticket to ATI to see what details I can get.
Edit 1 - March 2/2006 - 11:53PMEST:
Found a resource that has old drivers available. I\'m starting to install older drivers and see what comes of it.
http://www.ailis.de/~k/docs/atilinux/
Edit 2 - March 3/2006 - 12:47AM EST:
I have confirmed that the issue is between 8.18.8 and 8.19.10 - 8.18.8 does work. Newest: 8.22.5 does not.
Downgrade to 8.18.8 and issue should be resolved.
Edit 3 - March 3/2006 - 11:42 AM EST:
Updates to issues regarding this bug and ATI can be found here: http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=300

Could you run:
dmesg | grep fglrx
and if running Xorg version of X (ie not xfree)
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep fglrx
And post results
Thanks.

As my original post states - down grade to 8.18.8 and try again.
-
I cannot sorry. Old drivers don\'t support Xorg 7.0 and that would be a huge pain to downgrade.

Those are the only drivers I\'ve confirmed to work - ATI emailed me details for a new driver to try - I\'ll try it later this week.
-
Does this mean they will be updating their official drivers soon, or that they know of another old driver that is less buggy?
-
Hi,
I just got my ATI graphics card working. I dont know if these directions are just for SuSE or not because i am new at this but here is the link and good luck solving your problems.
ATI drivers install (http://jarpack.net/ati-driver-how-to)

8.18.6 has done me well enough on a Radeon 9200.
