I\'ve decided to begin holding monthly challenges in order to get you peoples doing stuffs! These challenges are completely UN-official . They\'re not for the devs to use, nor will they. They\'re to get you guys practice doing dev-like things, in a PlaneShift setting. Each entry will receive a tender loving review by myself and Cherppow (and depending on the response, maybe some guest celebrity judges in later challenges) in our quest to decide on a winner. Enough boring stuff, to the challenge!
2d Challenge 1
Objective: Create and illustrate an architectural style for the \"Gobble\" creature already prominent throughout the sewers in Hydlaa. In the wild, gobbles live in swampy areas in more primitive dwellings. They enjoy \'shiny\' things, which they like decorating their structures with.
Format: Entries can be digital or traditional (traditional entries will obviously need to be scanned). They should fill an 8.5x11, or A4, sheet of paper (or similar size digitally). They can be drawings of one, or multiple (or partial) buildings, just so long as we get a good idea of the style you are going for.
(big thanks to underthemoon for helping me get ideas for this one, I do appreciate it)
3d Challenge 1
Objective: Model AND texture an entrance for a dungeon. Also, make a name for the dungeon which fits the theme of your entrance. Try to make the entrance more interesting than a cave opening. It must look scary and uninviting (a place you wouldn\'t likely go by choice).
Format: Entries may use no more than 1000 triangles, and a 1024x1024 texture (this can, and should be, broken up to accomodate texturing the multiple objects your scene will have, so you may have, for example, 3 512x512 maps, and 4 256x256). The model should include enough landscape/background to fill up an 800x600 render, which you will submit along with an 800x600 wireframe of the scene. You should also submit your concept work (not required, but highly recommended).
Deadline : February 28th, midnight GMT
Submitting entries : Entries should be posted in this thread with some sort of heading labeling it as such. Please keep your entries limited to one post, and edit it as you see fit (before the deadline of course).
Judges : Cherppow and I
Prizes : fame, glory, undisputed awesomeness, a badge to put in your sig if you so choose, and a year\'s webhosting from jose (can I enter my own contest? I kinda want to win now...)
Please remember, the whole idea behind this is to give you all the opportunity to practice your art skills, and to receive feedback on your work. It is simply an initiative on my part to get you all arting it up in a PS setting. If you have any questions, feel free to post in this thread, or PM me.
-
How long until they make you a moderator for this forum, eh ArcaneFalcon? yes, I will sear today :P
While I don\'t think I have the skills to participate, I will add to the pool of prizes (fame, glory, and undisputed awesomeness? gasp!). If you win, I\'ll donate a year of webhosting. You\'ll get your site at http://yoursite.ps-mc.com/, a set of forums if you so desire (for a guild, perhaps?), and yourname@ps-mc.com or yourname@yoursite.ps-mc.com email address.
Happy arting!

Not sure if anyone has started with this, but I have.

It\'s not done obviously, I\'ll just update this post every now and then to show it building up. Hopefully there ARE other\'s who will compete and do better than I, since I suck.
-
Looking good, Archon. Since nobody else has made a spiffy Gobble achitecture picture yet, I might work on one... and if mine wins, someone will have to go and throw bricks at this forum\'s artists >.>
No, this is not an attempt to bump the thread >.>
People just don\'t read the stickies, do they?

I gues I could like draw one, but its kinda hard \'coz I only know so little about those Gobbles. But I\'ll give it a try anyway and put the picture in here.

So here it is. I should have used more time though...

..... that part above this text in the image is normally not shown coz it is inside and underwater

I have a couple questions for you. Well, a question and a suggestion.
1. Are the 2d and 3d entries judged seperately? So in all it\'s two different competitions?
2. For a prize to add, the winner of each could be a special guest judge in the next contest. Just a thought.
I hope to Jebus someone else enters in the 3d contest.. I don\'t want to win just by default from lack of competitors... Sad way to win the first contest. *sniff*.
-
Induane\'s post was actually posted by me, I didn\'t realize I was under his name until it was posted... My bad.
-
Induane/Archon:
1. Yes, they are essentially 2 different contests. There will be 2 sets of winners and everything.
2. I\'ll think about it. :)
Don\'t worry about more people joining. I think they\'re just waiting until the deadline is a bit closer (we all do it...except for Archon apparently). If nobody else does, then I\'ll have to set some ulbernauts loose in the fan art forums. >:|
Donguri:
That was part of the reason I chose the gobbles. It\'s pretty open ended (except for the fact that it will be somewhat rustic/swampish) so it leaves you plenty of options to get creative. Draw me something sweet. :) (and by sweet, I don\'t mean valentine\'s day kinda \"awww\" sweet, I mean face-melting \"holy flippin\' sweet!\" sweet).
:emerald:

Um-mum,
How big they are? how agile?
what do they look like and stuff?
Are they mean, scared, helpfull, greedy.. etc. ?
Or are those things also open ?
-
Erm, Donguri, go to the sewers to see a gobble.
-
If you all like the start, I can finish it, but anyway:

Geeze Kintall, give everyone else a chance to win... J/K, but that is awesome. I could definitely see gobbles walking around in those buildings.

Quite nice, realistic textures too.
The only things I find odd are the two rectangles in the middle... they make me think of teeth, but more rabbit teeth than dungeon teeths. I think a fang-shaped handle for each door would be spiffy, but that\'s just me :D
Good work so far!
@Kintall: looks good, but the perspective is a little odd. That back tower looks like it\'s leaning over, for instance. Of course I can\'t draw in perspective at all, so I\'m not the authority on it :P

[Alrighty: here\'s my interpretation of the Gobble\'s home life] :)
Excerpt from The Yliakim Encyclopaedia
Entry #26: Gobble
The Gobble is a shy, skulking creature, preferring the quiet of the shadowy caverns to the crowded grasslands and forests on the surface. It is a simple creature, spending its days scrabbling in the muck for food. It will sometimes build a simple fence, composed of sticks set erect in the mud, to direct wandering rats towards its home for an easy meal.
The Gobble is obsessed with shiny things, including what pieces of broken armor, weaponry, and chain they find. They often adorn their houses with these pieces.
Their homes are rudimentary -- little more than a pile of driftwood assembled into a pile, with a void beneath it in which it shelters itself. Many a traveller has passed right by, assuming that the Gobble home was no more than a pile of flotsam left over from the previous spring\'s flooding.
Because it is by nature a shy creature, the Gobble is abnormally aggressive towards explorers that wander within its territory. Travelers are advised to pack a sword as protection when duties require you to go through Gobble territory.

Well, that new one has taken first in my eyes. But everyone knows my opinion doesn\'t count :P
-
Now now Farren, all entries are in 1st place until proven otherwise. And besides, that\'s not even the point really...
Great work peoples. There\'s only 2 days left though, I need to see more! More I say!

Quick concept on the 3d challenge, pretty much just stole erik\'s idea with a huge tree in the water, I think he is pissed about it :P

Oki. Cherppow and I will go over the entries in the next day or two here. Great work peoples. I should have the results up by the end of the week (whatever today is...) as well as Challenge #2 for March (or whatever month is next...).

Wait for me! Wait for me!....
Argh... I thought the deadline was MIDNIGHT not 0:00, I have still some textures to finish.
Am I late ?
-
I\'m sure it\'s ok as long as you post before March in GMT. :) Thanks everyone for taking part!
-
Phew.
So, here you are:
Wireframe render (I\'m not sure what do you mean by this, so I am posting two versions)
(http://img493.imageshack.us/img493/900/dngnewire0kv.th.jpg) (http://img493.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dngnewire0kv.jpg)(http://img493.imageshack.us/img493/5521/dngnewire22ko.th.jpg) (http://img493.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dngnewire22ko.jpg)
Scene fully rendered in Blender:
(http://img493.imageshack.us/img493/1736/dngnrender18xu.th.jpg) (http://img493.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dngnrender18xu.jpg)(http://img493.imageshack.us/img493/2899/dngnrender25hl.th.jpg) (http://img493.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dngnrender25hl.jpg)(http://img493.imageshack.us/img493/180/dngnrender33fu.th.jpg) (http://img493.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dngnrender33fu.jpg)
As You can see on first screenshot, there are 993 faces (all triangular).
Textures:
3 tiles of size 256x512 (all big parts of gate)
2 tiles of size 256x256 (ground and walls)
3 tiles of size 64x512 (creeper, sides of door wings)
1 tile of size 64x64 (rust)
1 tile of size 32x256 (hanging moss)
1 tile of size 128x256 (spiderweb visible only on render3)
1 tile of size 64x128 (spiderwebs)
No concept art, sorry. My 2d drawings are awfull, so I usually don\'t draw by hand. The task description was enough for me.
I have to see how it looks in game, definitely, my 3d art thread should receive some new content soon :)
Good night.
EDIT (regarding comments below)
Thanks for compliments :)
About joining the Team: give me little more time, I need to learn more, I\'m slow and I need more practice, (on the other hand - slow developers suit PS Team, don\'t they ? :P ). And don\'t You try to take away my freedom ;)

I think there should be \"Contest comments\" thread (like, for example, in case of \"Great Fan-Fanart Project\" to keep this one tidy, and judges should not have access to it to have clean minds ;) ).

I say that we chain him to a keyboard and computer with a 3d program in Signapore, and whip him until he works!
Hands down, best one I have seen Wired. Amazing.

Wired Crawler. You are my new god.

Yes and he says he isnt any good!!! LOL I hate it when artists say that just so everyone goes \"What are you talking about you\'re @#$%* wonderful!?!?!?!\"

Great work on the entries everyone. Cherppow and I were pleased. I\'ll go ahead and give the winners first, then if you want to know why we chose who we did, you can read the little blurb about each...
Winners
2D: Gentar
3D: Wired_Crawler
Congrats to our two winners. I\'ll be pming you your prizes. :) Don\'t go thinking, however, that everyone else is a loser because they didn\'t win...they just didn\'t win. :P
--2D entries--
Donguri: You have a good concept here with the sort of beaver-like homes built just above the swamp and under the tree roots. You also gave the concept a nice feeling with the generally darker palette. It would have been nice, however, to see some better highlights here. You can keep the dark palette, while at the same time give us some lighter lights (especially in the shiny decorations). In addition, try to rely less on the outlines (thinner is better), and get some good reference. With some good reference, and less outlines, this could be a great piece.
Kintall: The texture and designs on the structures are great. Those are probably the strongest aspect of the piece. We also get a good swampy feeling from the background picture. One problem with the background, however, is that it throws off the perspective of the structures with the horizon line being so low (making the further structures seem like they are tipping). You could also work on using outlines a bit less. It\'s ok to have some, just don\'t rely on them to communicate edges (there are no outlines in real life, yet we can clearly see edges). As far as taking this to 3d goes, I think I\'d want some more small details. For example, the bridges were a bit plain. I\'d have no idea what to do with those. Lastly, the structural style was perhaps a bit too advanced for gobbles...but I guess that\'s somewhat subjective.
Learch: The text explanation was good, and helped give some background on the piece. Overall the technique was nice, and had good shading on the trees/sticks, and small rocks. The only thing the piece really lacked was an environment. Currently it looks like it\'s sitting on a cliff with blue sky in the background. Some swampy details are necessary, as well as a tiny bit more detail on the cliff to the left (just looks a bit plain at the moment). I think in general just try to give us a bit more sense of the environment, I\'m not really sure where this is supposed to be right now.
Farren: You have a good concept here, it just needs a bit more development. Currently there is no environment, not much shading (just on the little spikes, but the actual round hut doesn\'t look all that round), and the materials are a bit unclear. Some colour (I told Cherppow I\'d spell it with a \'u\' like he does) would probably help give us an idea as for the materials you were going for. We weren\'t sure if the spikes were supposed to be wood, or bone, or something else. Also, seeing a bit more would be nice. The tree/chimney in the back is a bit unclear at the moment. Like I said, the concept is great, you just need to hack out a bit more of the details for us.
Gentar: Your technique is good, though a bit on the sketchy side. The background was enough (it\'s just enough to give that swamp feeling, but not enough to distract attention), and the amount of detail is great. Both Cherppow and I would feel pretty comfortable taking this to 3d (and that\'s a big part of the reason we chose this one to win). Keep an eye on your perspective as you work, however (a bit hard with all the funny angles), and be sure to erase all those false lines.
--3D entries--
Archon: I think this obviously just needs to be finished. A name for this dungeon (per the instructions...), a simple background, and complete texture would make this pretty decent. The mesh looks pretty clean, just needs a bit more time into it to get it finished.
Thenior: The textures are nice and dirty. Your biggest problem (beyond the fact that this too is missing a name) is that it doesn\'t really have a style that pulls it all together. You have the angular marking in the door, then the round frame, and roundish marking on the door frame. The marking on top and the door frame fit pretty well, but the angular didn\'t complement it so well. Also, the purple/blue in the marking was a bit distracting. You\'re in need of a colour theme as well, and we didn\'t think the blue/purple really fit. Beyond that, it just needs to be finished off also. You may have a little issue with the uv\'s too, there\'s a little jump in the texture at the top and bottom of the door, but it\'s a relatively small problem.
Niber: While this is obviously 2d, and not finished, I\'d have to say that your concept is the most interesting of the four. It\'s too bad it wasn\'t yours ya little thief. Erik\'s were much better anyway. :P
Wired_Crawler: Well, saying as this was the only one really finished according to the instructions, it\'s kinda hard not to give it the win. Overall it is a great start, but there are several things that could use some work. They all center around the textures mainly (the mesh looks nice and clean). The texture that could use the most work is the stone. The highlights are a bit to bright, and the bevels are too deep, which make it look plasticy. In nature stone has a much more matte finish. In addition to the highlights, it could use some more color variation as well (more dirt, more variations in stone color, etc.). The other big one was that you need to watch your uv space. Your door frame looks like it has more uv space than the door, which has much more uv space than the ground. Giving the ground some more would really help. Last, and less of an issue, was your moss was a little too uniform. It was all uniform in length, as well as horizontal spacing. Give it some more variation. I know I pointed out a lot of things you can work on, but there are way more things that you did right. Great job.
I hope you all don\'t think I\'ve been too negative in these...I\'m trying to keep them positive, but I don\'t want to leave anything out that you can work on either. If I\'ve missed anything, or said something wrong, I\'m sure Cherppow will swing by and embarass me. Great work on the entries everybody. I\'ll have challenge #2 up in a few days. :)
-
Congrats to the winners! \\o/ And to all the applicants - you guys rock!
-
heh, I drew mine in about 5 minutes after giving up my search for a picture of yoda\'s hovel to serve as a model for my drawing...
Edit: And by the way, that was a tree that serves at a support beam of sorts, the material is long grass, stuff like that packed with mud I guess and layered. I figured that gobbles would be very primitive, possibly not even able to use weapons as we would, or craft things such as we would, and thus came out with a very primitive dwelling.
-
Great job everybody!
I really loved your pic Gentar. Exactly how I pictured them to show off their shiny items :)
-
lol ahh well, I probably would have spent the winnings on beer n skittles anywho ^^ (and yeah the lines in mine are heavy as a morning fog too :P)
Grats to the winners, tiz much deserved *gives thumbs up n cheezy grin*
/me looks forward to what everyone does for the next one, twah twah

Nice little competition! All the submissions had good attributes (and, of course, the winning submissions were great, and deserved the win!)
Congrats!
Special props to Cherppow and ArcaneFalcon for hosting this competition, and for the honest (but gentle) critiques of the entries! Nicely done!
/me looks forward to the next one...
