Title: "the big wipe"
Post by: Gripen on February 20, 2006, 02:58:07 am
About \"the big wipe\"
After reading forums I understood it to be \"the big character wipe\" where all the characters are wiped.  Then I read that the character wipe had already happened (in April?). Yet, it is still mentioned as going to happen.  Is this \"big wipe\" a wipe of more than just the characters?
Or, do big wipes happen every so often?  Particularly, complete character wipes?

There will be more than one wipe :) Sometimes it\'s just a necessity in development - it adjusts balance, brings in more for characters to play with (as wipes almost always carry new content with them), etc. There is no \"Big Wipe,\" really - as in no one major one. A character wipe will happen again and again until they are no longer necessary.

You read posts about it and didn\'t get this? Thankfully wipes are rare but the devs wipe stuff when they feel it\'s needed to get rid of weapons that didn\'t turn out as they wished for example or to have people start over so they can tweak the skillsystem.

So far there has only been one true character wipe in CB so dont\'t expect it to happen everyother week but no garuntees are given ofcourse ;)

I have a question about the character wipe.  When that occurs and if there is a new version, will I have to download new software of will it update on my computer automatically?

That\'s not really wipe-related :) All updates will have to either go through the updater (separate utility included in your download) or there will be a complete redownload of the entire PlaneShift package. The latter isn\'t too likely to occur for various reasons (one of the main ones being the stress it would put on the update servers), so smaller bits and pieces downloaded through your updater application will probably be it. You won\'t just open PlaneShift one day and be notified that you\'re missing updates and then have them automatically downloaded. At least not yet.

Why do I read only positive comments regarding the general-wipe?

Just as a reminder...
We will try to preserve as much information as possible (like guilds) but all points, trias, and items will be gone and reset to the starting position (i.e. nothing or what you got from the MB migration).

...everybody agrees to loose his own work of maybe 1 or 6 months? Even if things in the game are wiped due to a bug in the past that has given advantage to some players in the game. Are such lucky things not also a part of the real life? I haven\'t seen anything that those advanteges haven\'t been regulating themselves in the game. The millionaires made contests or bought weapons for millions. So, others could benefit from that too. And exactly all these activities around the money bug has given some impact in the game. Espacially when all the nice weapons were wiped and players were frustrated.

I can\'t believe, that one day I will find myself in the sewers and start killing rats for hours and days again! And I have to build my character from scratch ... looting, training skills and stats, find weapons and so on ...

I don\'t think that a wipe does help to develop the game. There are more important tasks that should be done. Even as a Alpha-Tester, one should get respect for the work he did in the game. And should not be treated as a monkey feeded with peanuts.

Many players do not agree to just loose everything (points, skills, weapons, money, etc.) they hardly built up by hours, days, weeks and months. Some wont play PS anymore. Guilds will disapear. Others will be more aggresive in the game to quickly develop to the level they lost. And therefore you can be sure, that the players will then wipe themself from PS.

Hey, we - the players - are the ones that decide if all your work gets the applause or not. The best programmed game isn\'t as good as there are no players anymore. And without audience no applause.

Dear developers you should really think about your wipe-out plan.

I still hope, that I\'m a fool and did not understand the consequences of the planned wipe and therefore my above comments are useless.

Cheers...
Thulian

And yes, I\'m one of those who took an advantage out of the money bug, because someone bought a dagger for 1 mil. from me - it wasn\'t even a realy good dagger ;-). Believe it or not: the fact is that others were benefiting too out of my luck. Contests, support, jokes, happy days, funny chats, etc. - just nice activities instead of monotonous looting.

P.S. My english isn\'t that good, cause my mothertongue is german. But I hope the readers understand my opinion.

Answer : Because everyone accepts the risks ...........

This \"game\" is in constant development, and as a consequence of that, total wipes are nescessary now and again for lots of reasons, including regaining in-game balance and everyone starting off on the same footing.

Maybe it won\'t be the sewers and the rats, maybe by then there will be a new place, and maybe something different to kill, who knows ?

That is the beauty of being involved in a game at this stage ..... development .... who knows where we will end up ?  :P

The devs have thought about the wipes. Repeatedly, seriously, and with much discussion. Believe it or not, wipes are indeed necessary in games of such an early state. If they can be avoided, they will be - the dev team never does this just because they feel everyone should start all over again. There have been multiple threads, many many, discussing the wipe, its reasons, arguments for and against it, but they\'ve ended up being closed because 1) the devs minds are made up, and 2) they were the same arguments repeated over and over. It shouldn\'t be too hard to search for those past debates, but I\'m a bit apprehensive about having another.
