I whish to have a map of the world of Planeshift. Litteral description confuse me and I don\'t understand the struture of Planeshift.
I would be helpfull to have some representation of that famous stalactite, the place and the form of the crytal, where stone labyrinth begin and how huge is the cave where that stalactite \"lies\", the dimesions of Ylikum and its city and so on...
Perhaps this is still in work but a general picture would help.

If you want a map get a large piece of paper and you can draw every way you go, Maps take all the fun out of the game and unless you draw one I doubt you will get it.

In general, I disagree with this statement. High detailed maps of levels and dungeons DO hurt the game, while general low level games help foster imagination. A nice \"parchment-like\" map of places mentioned in the history would complement additional story telling and help illustrate concepts to newbies that don\'t feel like reading the currently akwardly worded history.
-
This is exactly what I wanted: \"parchment-like\". Thank you for your precisions.
-
Look at the map inside any decent fantasy book, a map like that would be great. If someone is great at drawing get instructions from som setting people and start drawing. I would love a map in the history section.
-
I don\'t think that maps is a good idea.
Then you could just draw a map over a dungeon/labyrinth and the sell it to other players. Then they had no problems to just walk throught the dungeon without making any mistakes because they had a map where you could read where you should and shouldn\'t go.
A dungeon isn\'t a dungeon if everybody draws maps where you can read where it\'s dangerous and safe. :(

Did you not read the entire post? Or pehaps you like reiterating the obvious and rubbing Link\'s nose in the fact that he misinterpreted the original post?
Anyway, so how about it. One of you 2D guys want to throw together a \"Tolkien\"-like map of the stalagtite? I know that personally it would help me visuallize the environment. I\'d draw something, but I\'d probably not get it right and end up wasting my time.
Map of the city/etc would help answer the following questions that I have seen passed over in previous posts or never asked:
How big are these stairs and lift/pullies between levels?
How does the crystal light the lower levels if it is on the top of the cavern?
How populated are the invidual levels?
How deep do the levels go? Are they smaller vertically (in addition to the obvious horizontal scaling) as they go go down?
How plentiful are the streams? Where do they flow from the second levels to the lower levels? Holes? Over the edge? Through the stone?
Is the stalagtite open to the whole cavern or closed off in all or partial places?
-
ok in most mmorpg\'s people who are good help people out with maps, expert tips and what not. this is only natural I mean once this game is set I plan on writting a basic walk through for members of my clan. and I think this is only natural and should be expected, there is nothing wrong with helping your fellow gamer.
-
i would say let the players make the maps - so unless they know what they\'re doing, the maps are not going to bve perfectly accurate.... whicjh makes things far more entertaining.

Maps are great. For this one game Faldon, I created mining maps of squares in mines that held ore (which generated over time). Eventually, this made it much more easy for myself to mine because i had memorized the entirity of it. The best mine I did not bother with because i never had the time and my frequent visits to the lesser mines was enough.
I agree with the map idea you are talking about. It would look interesting and give enough of a general idea about the place to make it helpful yet not make it too easy. Who would want a straightup walkthrough of everything? You wouldn\'t find anything for yourself and lose out on some of the fun of exploration and finding those hidden treasures.

Does no one get that this thread is NOT about acurate game/dungeon maps? It is about a fuzzy map with a few labels and dimensions to go along with the history! If you did not get that by the third post, I AM LETTING YOU KNOW AGAIN!
It is PURELY a settings related request (that I agree with Shasckaw is needed) and NOT some player made map. The entire purpose of the map would be to help people understand the world in which they role play. This is not some guild tool, quest cheat, or otherwise unbalancing facility. Pick up a damn fantasy book and look in the front. Almost all have a map to help describe things. If you do not know what I am talking about, then do not post off topic.
Like I said earlier, this is a settings problem and if its an \"up in the air\" issue (on all accounts), I\'d be happy to draw what I envision the world as. If not, I\'d REALLY like a map so my fiction/etc. doesn\'t end up going against the grain of the world.
EDIT: This Post is not pointed at Gateway, rather anyone that is not talking about a history related, dev created (and followed), map of the player known PS universe/city/cave/whatever.

it doesn\'t really matter, people will draw maps by theirselves anyways and put them on sites

Quite frankly, I don\'t care if the hobo down the street draws the map (BTW, his name is Boxcar Billy and he sure does like his Schnapps and Planeshift in the evening). I just want something that is sanctioned by the dev team / community. Argghh, this does not mean, \"I\'ll draw a map when the game comes out\". I want a map \"now\" (before the actual level design) that the level designers will follow as a \"rule of thumb\" (acuracy beyond names and vaguely relative locations is unimportant). Something like river locations/names, city formations, water depth (on lower levels), etc. If I have to become a settings contributor (which, if my story is in game, then I guess I kind of already am) to get it done, then so be it. My point is, the settings people already \"know\" what the world looks like and I only have an incomplete, awkwardly worded description to go by.
-
well, yes, but you didn\'t make the thread and I was talking about the comments to that

Huh? Shasckaw made the thread and he is talking about the same thing I am, which is apparent from the 4th post. My passion for the subject has been greatly amplified by the series of off topic posts and my recent need for such a map.
I am sorry for yelling, but for every off topic post that occurs, there is less a chance that someone who could be involved with the map to see the original intent of the thread.
-
Ya, ok, maybe that was easy to misunderstand...what I meant was the post could have been answered in one or two posts, but for some reason its still being talked about

That is very true Kiern, but the thread is half a month old and I haven\'t see any of the settings officals stand up and say \"Here\'s a map!\" or \"I\'m working on it right now you silly gooses!\" or \"It\'ll be decided in XX months or by XX release.\" or even \"Get off it Kinshadow, here\'s the info you need, now you do the damn thing. We all hate this setting crap! \" Any of the above answers is fine, I\'m really just wanting it as soon as possible so I have to do as little fiction rework as possible. I\'d hate to write a story with rivers on level 3, when it turns out that level 3 is actually dry or something.
-
Let me thank you for the defense you provided for me, Kindashow. I TOTALLY agree with you, I confirm. :]
It\'s strange, so much posts in just one half day... I still don\'t have the answer I wait as for you Kindashow. I wonder when the dev staff will pronounce itself about this topic...
Please all, stop flood until you have something important to tell about this topic. Thanks to all.
-
it\'s not flooding, some people misunderstood the topic and they were commenting about it :D

Shasckaw:
The client is currently in alpha, and at this stage no physical maps exist.
All of the teams focus at the moment is on producing MB and to that end a great deal of hard work has gone into the upcoming release.
A map will become a necessity for the team at some future stage, of course.
HTH.

I know this reply was not to me, but do to the fact that I am a control freak and REALLY want a map of some sort. Please be aware that this is not an attack and that you just happen to post something that I am uncharacteristicly passionate about (see above).

Yet, there is a history and a pseudo description of the area. How about just a nice drawing of where the crystal is in regard to the levels. I think the big problem is getting over the description on the web page. With a good deal of people having English as a second language ( and no, I am not one of these people, but the description is still confusing to me ) a nice \"simple\" drawing would be greatly appreciated. If you are worried about numbers or details, then leave them out.

The setting team? What exactly is the setting team doing to push MB as opposed to the whole setting in general? Do all the developers on the setting team deligently work in multiple groups?
If your refering to having a dedicated 2D person, this is not nessecary as a MS Paint (or Gimp if you perfer) \"hand-drawing\" would work well for my (and I presume other\'s) purposes. ASCII art will do equally well.
In addition, if someone is willing to provide me personally (via a PM) a more detailed description, then I would (and have already, multiple times in this thread) volunteer for this most gruesome assignment. FEAR NOT!! My two years of art classes in high school and untold hours of Brittany Spears cut and paste (putting elf ears on her...not unlike... Kada...) shall not be spent in vain!!!!!!
On a more important note. This is the Alpha as you said, but the fact that more setting material is not available seems a little off. If you were a real software organization, as opposed the loose OSS group it is, then setting and the grand scheme would be already a little more firm (meaning it would have a general map). The resulting art of the game (excluding its beautiful engine) should be extrapolated from the fantasy setting. Not the other way around. Obviously, level designers and other artists need freedom, but they should have a little more to work with. Before anyone says \"You do it you!\", I like to think the short stories I am working on will help this cause. Unfortunately, they too are an extrapolated (not derivative!) work and I have no authority (in my mind at least) to push the base work, as I did not create it.

kinshadow, if I were you I would feel free to make maps based on the info you have, particularly of L2-8 and submit them to Talad along with explanations of why you made certain choices.
Thank you for helping us to become a more professional organization.

We do have some maps on the PlaneShift world. But these are just static maps ment for pointing out to devs where certain things are located. SO no fancy stuff on it :) But I just wanted to point out that we will not randomly create worldsf as we progress.

Thank you for your vote of confidence Venge. I think I\'ll take you up on your suggestion. I may just whip you guys into shape yet! :D
Kinshadow\'s Professional Agenda (Number 743.89):

So, you have a couple undetailed maps? Are they digital? Can you please post these? If they are SO unfinished you would be embarassed to show the world at large, can you send them to me so I can incorporate what you have and refine it a little?
-
Kinshadow, what you are talking about is feasible through joining the team, either as a contributor or as a WTB member. So just drop us a mail and reach us in IRC to get all the necessary info. I see no obstacles in doing so :)

Finally I see that my suggestion was a good one!

In my divine quest to chart the reaches of the world known as PlaneShift, I have stumbled across the root of some of my original confussion. It has been a while since I have even heard the words \"Dante\'s Inferno\" and my mental picture was inaccurate. For those of you that are also confused, please look at the following links and some light will be shed on the mystery for you as well.
