So you can use the source code to make your own project, but since the graphics are not free to use, you can\'t simply fork the game because you hate them cat-people and just want to level up without having to always be IC andhave a lame IC name? or perhaps anything else you dislike?
-
What a joke :D
No, no forks. Ever.
-
how about mods? most great games have mods
-
You aren\'t allowed to alter PS art, technically - and if you can mod and add content, you\'re much better of just joining the team. However, the usage of any feature that\'s not planned by the dev team is also technically considered cheating, so that would mean no mods.
-
mods work differently in purely online games. you connect to a server that runs everything basically. the client you run on your computer provides you a way to connect to the server. yes, you can mod files on your client (like different texture files for the characters) but you and only you will see the mods becuase it is a local file on your computer and not one on the server the game runs on. so if you want to mod how a drawf looks, go ahead, but only you will see the mod. if you wanted others to see your new \'skin\', everyone would have to instal your mod. as for the types of mods that cahnge gameplay ( Example: different DeathMatch types for FPS games, differnt win types for RTS games, etc.), ain\'t gonna happen. not on an official server anyway. thats not to say later down the line the dev team may hold speacial events like \"everyone looks like a Ulbernaught day\", but these would official events, not someones mod.
Edit: Miss K types too fast. :P
Edit Edit: I re-read the title of the thread. Umm, what\'s wrong with the Enki\'s that you would want to get rid of em? *pets his little enki character* Aww, so cute.

I can make maps and do 3d animation and i\'m in the process of learning to code so i guess i should try and help with the development and perhaps I can get some of my ideas added.
what would be really great (not using planeshift) would be a MMO-FPS, yes?

Here\'s the senario I see happening: I first log on to the \"world\" I get spawn camped. repeat that 5 million times over. the end. but hey, you want to try it, I\'m not going to stop yeah.
-
well obviously that wouldn\'t be good, of course there are many solutions:
1. Spawn farthest (with auto-scaling realm)
2. Team deathmatch
3. safe zones (after all, the same thing could happen in MMORPG\'s if it weren\'t for thier systems in place to stop this)
after all the only difference would be the map size and number of players and you dont usually get spawn munched in ordinary FPS?
-
that may all be well in good, but lets take this from another angle.
why would I want to play a pay to play Online FPS (server costs will eat you alive with the amount transfer it takes to properly update eveyone\'s client with the crital info they need about everyone else (firing a machine gun at 100 rounds a minute X hundreds of players = massive amount of real-time data transfer) so it must be pay per play, or you\'re going to have to find a very very generous server host) also, why woudl I want to play it when I just load up call of duty, go to a map of 160 players and frag out for free (well, after purchasing the game anyway) I just don\'t see it happening really. but hey, if you want to go for it, then don\'t let me stop you.
now to say at least a bit on topic of your original topic: why you wanting to get rid of my poor little Enki? He needs love just like everyone else. poor little fella.
-
I just don\'t much like cat-people, and besides racism towards them adds medi-evil realism to the game.
and once again I fail to see servers as a large obsticle, if we use multiple servers and link them together then i\'m sure people will host them for free like ordinary FPS(just look at ET?), it might be a little bit hard smoothing all the servers together due to people liking to set thier own server rules but i\'m sure that would cause too much trouble.

Nicken runs to Karyuu \"Kary, he doesn\'t like me!\" Nicken gives chronokun a lick and a purr. \"There, maybe now you like me?\"
As for your theory about multiple servers. Doing that way means different vendors right? What happens when one vendor goes down for maintenace or something? A person tries to load that sector and bam, crash, cause that part of the world isn\'t there. And that\'s enough talk of this from me about your FPS idea. I don\'t see it happening, but hey, maybe you\'ll surprise me or something. Unless ther is more ontopicness talk, I\'m outa this thread.
-
Enkis aren\'t to be trusted!
...Theres too many of them
-
Always such easily fixed problems....
Just because PlaneShift crashes when a map cant be accessed doesn\'t mean its impossible to make it simply put a wall in the places where that server should be and spawn you on a different server
Is planeshift going to have other servers at a later point? and are they to be duplicates of the current server? or part of it? or different maps?
Also why must you be IC in planeshift? is that really fair to all the people who play MMO to level up and gain satisfaction from killing really big stuff to get priceless artifact items that no one else has? (kinda like shoping for non-gamers) besides NPC\'s kinda kill the story anyways buy always saying \"could you rephrase\"
-
PlaneShift will have more servers when they are necessary, and they will all load the same world. The community won\'t be split.

PlaneShift is made for roleplayers, not mindless hack-and-slashing. This isn\'t a game for every single type of player in the world. Roleplay has the priority, and everyone will make sure that this remains :)
-
so by \"all load the same world\" does this mean when I connect i can interact with everyone playing PlaneShift rather than just the ones currently in my realm as is the case in some MMO\'s like WoW?
-
You will be able to talk/meet with everyone that has PlaneShift running, not just those on your server.
-
I haven\'t played RS, since it was still in it\'s infancy, but how they handled multiple servers then (not sure if it the same now) was that no matter which server of the world you were on, you could still tell who was online no matter which server they were using and you could communicate with them. Example: 1st player: dude, what server you on? I\'m on server 2. 2nd: I\'m on server 1, switch over. 1st: Alright.
I believe PS is to be set up similar.
Edit. Gah, Kary, you type too fast, or my refresh is slow.
-
Hit Preview before Reply to see if anything new has been posted below :P I usually do that. Besides, you add useful information regardless of what I post.
There should be no reason to switch servers or ask someone to do that, I think. Besides just \"the hell of it\" ;)

Now this may be a bit of a stretch, but back in the day that I played RS, there was still a bit of roleplay. If people were on different servers, they couldn\'t do things together. So one switched. Make sense?
-
Hm, I think so. However, this won\'t be the case for PlaneShift - you\'ll not only be able to talk to everyone everywhere, you\'ll be able to play with them and do things together. There will basically be no need to switch servers.
-
Alright. That is a much better way to do it anyway. So the servers shall be nodes in a cluster then? Each sharing the load. Sorta like multiple processors on a single board? I really like the load balancing idea. But then if it were to be that way, then why even the multiple servers upon the client load up? The only reason I see is if you live physically closer to one than the other and you want to reduce LAG times. (smaller ping response times) But even still, all the servers will be communicating with each other and the clients to show everyone accross every server. It would only be as good as the slowest server with the most lag yes?
I guess doing it this way would make more sense to me if, upon cleint logon, you just simply logged into the PS network, and not select an individual server, since that\'s really what a person will be doing anyway. Sure, the multiple servers could be listed to show the user the current status off them (up/down/etc), but really, but they would just connect to the PS network, not indivdual server.
Or am I thinking about this in the wrong way?
Also, although I do expect that there will be a time where multiple servers will be neccessary, (I don\'t mean this in any negative way) this will be far off, since the one server right now seems to be more than enough to handle peek times.

Why fork PS there are plenty of free online games out there go and play one of them and leave us Enkidukai alone to our obsessive IC\'ness
-
Well, from a coding perspective:
Laanx is fine for capacity. Barring server bugs, we could hold quite a bit more players then now.
We already have plans for mulitple servers, which seamlessly let all players interact with anyone on any server. Of course, this has not been finished as there is no need.
You can \"fork\" planeshift- if you use none of the art, maps, setting, or rules. So you could make a game without Enki, but you would have to remove pretty much everything else, including our wonderfull combat system (:P).
-
If you want a game that doesn\'t give a darn about IC and there aren\'t any enkidukai, try RuneScape. If you want a pay-to-play game, what the heck are you doing here?
-
I propose a guild whit the sole purpose of providing powerlevelers whit max weapons , armor , all glyphs and enaugh money to max up there stats and skills...this way they will leave whitin a few days , as they will have achieved there purpose in the game...maxing up
.....and maybe the poor rogue in the forest will get a few free minutes to fetch a beer and a weapon to defend himself

Heh, yeah.:) The other part of the problem is people who ~try~ to stay in character, but every other sentence is something like \"Omg! I can\'t fight her, she deals 300!\"
If you don\'t want to stay in character, just play runescape, or tibia, or counterstrike, or whatever the popular game is these days. It really is that easy.

Blah ... Drey loves us enki\'s. He is just having a grumpy day. Don\'t listen to him! :P

yes. ps with out enkis would be like... well there is nothing to describe it with, such would be the horror. besides the fenkis are nice to watch.

Medi-evil racism.
That\'s all I have to contribute to this thread. Medi-evil racism.
-
Setting.
The races have been living long enough among each other to get along. Some individuals may have distrust, but no race hates another. Just because it\'s a medieval fantasy game doesn\'t mean it relates exactly to our medieval ages ;)

No race hates another, but there are individuals who seem to be racist.

interesting topic here, lol
and to be honest... i have coded before and if the programmer wants it, its put in.
if the programmer doesnt want it, you\'ll never see it.
honestly its that simple. i also have no idea what \"fork\" means other than the popular cuss word that i wont mention as i dont know any of your distastes to words yet but im sure you get the general idea.
anyway, onto the point:
you\'ll always have people who complain about anything and everything and players who want things removed because they \"said so\" and the such... this is unavoidable my friends. the only real methods ive found that are useful are to either ignore them until they go away (and yes, they will go away if you actually ignore them as you\'re taking away their reasoning for doing what they\'re doing) or have someone with power remove them. either way... you\'ll never be rid of them.
one more thing... players suggest ideas but ultimately, its up to the owners. O-o
edit: if you dont mind my asking... is this game bent on realism or creating a fictional world where happiness reigns over all? O-o
(i hope this does not offend anyone as its not meant to and all questions are asked in a serious manner)
