Title: Race-specific armor
Post by: defender43 on March 15, 2006, 04:00:35 pm
I think that armor should be made for one particular race.

Ylian armor should not fit an Enkidukai, because their anatomies are so different.

Ynwnn armor should not fit a Dermorian, because of the size difference.

Stonebreakers SHOULD be able to wear a Hammerwielder\'s armor, because (what\'s the difference?)

... you get where I\'m going with this?

Rings and jewelry should be wearable for everyone, though.

It would be realistic.

This I am inclined to agree with.  Very strongly. Lokii cannot and will not fit into an elves trousers.  No matter what!  So there should be race specific armor, but I also think that there should  be several types of armor for a race.

Ever seen a ring that fits both Kran and Klyros fingers?

I haven\'t ...

I have brought this up with Talad as well, but right now this would just be too much to do. That distinction isn\'t worth making yet - and with 23 models (races + genders) imagine how much loot will be trashed, or how hard the economy will be to start. When the world and its population increases, this will be easier to accomplish. Still, it\'s a bit of distance away.

In reality, all armor would probably be custom made for each person.  However, as already said, this would be annoying.  I\'d much rather just have them be interchangeable amongst players.

perhaps this could be a way around it. When a player buys it from an NPC, they will automatically get the armour for their race (like in real life, S, M, L, XL etc). But when they buy it from a player the armour is marked as (for example): -K- which means Kran, so an enkidukai could not automatically wear it, but would ahve to go to say a smith\\tailor or whatever and pay them to modify it for them. :\\

Good points, all of you.

Shouldn\'t the armor ALSO be gender-specific (except for Klyros, which are identical?)
Title: Now we can make it really confusing:

Some armors might be made in a way that allow usage by both genders, while some armors are gender specific.

There is a way this could be done without much annoyance and with giving armorsmiths more work. Give the armorsmiths a skill with which they can customize pieces of armor.

Anyone who wants to wear armor will need to have it customized first. If you buy some in a shop it should be made for you so it is already customized for your race and body shape and wearable instantly. If you want to wear armor a friend gave to you or some you found on an enemy you killed, you\'ll have to drop it at an armorsmith first, who will then customize it for you so you can put it on. The more skill went into crafting the armor, the more materials and skill are needed for customizing it. Or you could even go further and allow customizing to change the armor attributes. If the smith who changes your armor for you has less skill than the one who made it, the armor might become a bit weaker .. and vice versa.

I know of games that have something similar but when you customize an item there nobody else can ever use it. I\'d rather not see that though because that does ruin player economy. As long as you can keep customizing an item it won\'t become useless. This will also encourage player interactions and give armorsmiths a whole lot more to do.

I like the idea of customization, not just for fitting different people, but for adding custom traits.  It also means there are fewer items around, and less junk.  It would encourage players to take care of and upgrade stuff, rather than just replacing it every 3 seconds.

Surley you wouldn\'t need to add a whole skill for this.
You could either dump it in armor repairing or you could dump it under blacksmithing.
Either one is good for it.

You could put some of it in blacksmithing... but I\'d like to see a blacksmith repair chain mail... then there\'s leather...

Perhaps diferent skills. Tailoring for leather, blacksmithing for plate, for chain mail... don\'t know.

I think quite a bit of armor should be wearable by everyone and every genre (think \"magic armor\" attribute that \"fits all\"), occassionally mixed with race-specific armor. However, something like a top tier armor for each race should definitely be unique and have specific requirements. And even that should have a few variations. Basically, almost like in Anarchy Online.

;) Ahhh, but the realisim to this point is you can take it to a jewler and get it sized.  Who knows, the ring might fit on the krans\' pinky, but a klyros\' thumb.

[edit] As per the topic of this thread I think it is a wonderful idea. I look forward to waaaaaay in the future of this being put into effect.
