Title: story challenge #2
Post by: steuben on March 16, 2006, 09:28:43 pm
an old man walks in, leaning heavily on his cane. he takes an old gaunlet from from his coat. he holds it momentarily at arms length. his arm quivers with the effort. he drops it. it hits the floor with a clatter and rolls slightly. the inlays of gold and platinum can be faintly seen in the dark iron.

"all you who tell us stories," he says. "i lay this challenge at your feet. tell us your best, we the people will decide the rest."

he turns around, and leaves.

been thinking we've been needing to have another one of these. and this time we'll try it with a theme. and the theme is "tavern." i'll leave the rest to your imaginations.

the guidelines:
1. roughly 2000 words max. can be much less, but not to much more.
2. ps settings
3. postmarked no later then midnight (local time) may 30, 2006
4. one entry per person, if you come up with a better one the previous entry can be withdrawn.
5. original works only. no rehashes of previously posted works. to keep things even.
6. a) submit works to steuben viscosa (steuben.viscosa@sympatico.ca) with "ps open challenge" in the subject line
b) include title, and forum name.
7. it should be able to get a pg rating. no foul language, no sex, no nudity, pre-9 pm prime time kind of stuff.
8. no prizes. fame and glory to the best three. just fame to everybody else.
9. selection will be done by popular vote, by forum members, from 11am (est) june 1 to 12:00 am (est) june 15.
10. anything else as needs must.

post, pm, or hunt me down in irc to discuss.

I just read the story Farren and it\'s good. You have quite a nice writing style. :) The big problem is that
you don\'t respect Steuben\'s 6th rule:

Quote
6. a) submit works to steuben viscosa with \"ps open challenge\" in the subject line
b) include title, and forum name.

The reason this rule exists, I believe is to avoid people from getting unfair advantages. The sooner you post, the more people will have the time to read your story and thus you are more likely to get votes. At the first story challenge, Steuben avoided this problem by posting all stories at the same time which I believe is his plan for this round as well. So, you should probably remove the text from your post and just PM it to him instead.

Another thing is that you do not respect the set theme that is \"Tavern\". Hopefully you will be able to make modifications to your current text, not to have to write a whole new story... :(

EDIT: Removed a section not to ruin the story :EDIT

Anyway, if I ignore all the rules, your story was nice and well-written :)

EDIT: remember to be consistent in your choice of tenses. You sometimes switch between past tense and present tense for no good reason.

I\'ve never written a PS story before and have a couple questions...

should the people in the story be real PS characters? or should/can I make up new people that don\'t really exist?

If I do write about real players, do I need their permission?

Thanks!

basic answer is your call.

if you are going to use characters that are other people\'s check in with them first. if it\'s just going to be a walk through, you won\'t have to worry to much. but for anything more than that, it is best to get what info you can so that the character can be well written in.

I hate to ask, but is this thing still going on? Any updates? New stories? Or has this been completely abandoned?

still going on.
the deadline for submissions is may 30th.

but don\'t forget, the writing area has never been one of the most productive.

Hmmm, I might consider doing this. Kinda hard to figure on a "story". But I have and idea that I could follow up on....
