Is it permited? I think it should be. However, to remove unnecessary stress from the game it would be nice to invent some sign to show other player that this harassment is not real. For example [RPH] or [sorry for that, just roleplaying:)]. Does this sound like a stupid idea? Oh... I know... it does :D
-
Interesting concept. So, you\'re encouraging those who play an ass but are rather nice people in reality to say so? Probably a decent idea, though, many people who RP a moron usually are just morons... :/
-
as long as the people you role play with know its all in char then its fine...
other than that it could be all \"blah blah \'95 harrasment act\" and such.
-
Aren\'t we role playing with everyone in PlaneShift? Or are we supposed to be in little groups all doing their own thing?

well, if someone manages to get the game working (yes, it does happen) and logs on and one of the first things they see is you cursing at someone... what do you think their opinion will be..?
having said that what i said isn\'t affected in any way by what you said ;)
as long as other know you don\'t really mean it...
-
OK, what I\'m saying is that if you log onto PS, you should expect EVERYONE there to be roleplaying. And if some jerk is cussing another player out, the impression I will get is that that guy/gal is a jerk. It doesn\'t matter if in real life they are or are not. They are acting out a character.
This assumption should be safely made by anyone that is playing PS. I play a \"good and helpful\" character in PS. This doesn\'t mean I am so in RL.
I don\'t think I should get a little tag that says \"good guy\".

Bottom line, agreed :) However, if the someone being rude/annoying is obviously OOC, that\'s a whole other issue.
I\'m wincing at the word \"harassment\", because while it\'s entirely possible for characters to harass other characters, it\'s usually been players harassing characters/players. Anyway, there was a thread not too long ago about roleplaying an\"evil\" guy with suggestions from people, so clearly not everyone is forced to be cut from the all-is-good-yay mold ;) The key though, as always, is communication - and making sure that other people understand your intentions. All people should be roleplaying, but the reality is that they aren\'t, and we shouldn\'t make assumptions that may ultimately confuse or hurt someone.
Better play it safe, until you know that you no longer have to.
-
I believe that emotion and behaviour descriptions using \"/me\" and \"/my\" could add some credibility to the roleplaying intention, if you really want to play a nasty character.
Lots of swearing in general dialogues quickly sounds like OOC flaming. But adding descriptions of your rage, your body language, your thinking processes and such, should give people a hint that you are playing in this case.
-
Yliakum swear words should be different from RL swear words! If I see the f word EVER, that should be an immediate evidence of OOC.
That way, people who wouldn\'t know, wouldn\'t know they were swearing.
-
/me agrees with Gag
-
Hi all,
Yes, the IC/OOC issue is key. I\'ve had several situations in game in which I couldn\'t at first tell whether the \"harasser\" was in or out of character. I\'ve decided to deal with it in character myself and wound up having some pretty rich roleplaying sessions.
-
Harassment can be defined as any sort of unwanted contact.
Anyone at any time can decide that any instance of contact is unwanted, therefore any action and anything you say can be taken as harassment depending on who\'s around.
As far as harrassment as in being a jerk, if it\'s in character and it isn\'t cheating or exploiting the game mechanics, then I say go for it. Just make sure it stays in game and in character. That means no /tells, no IRC, and IMo preferably no forum posts.
Since everything we do in game is supposed to be in character according to Talad\'s official rules for players, the requirement of \"Making sure they know it\'s in character\" is null.

\"Suggestion\". We all know how well new players follow the rules.

The question is, if you\'re really in character most of the time and playing a jerk...why do you care if someone thinks you\'re a jerk in real life? As long as your attacking their character and not their person I don\'t see how there\'s a need for an announcement of it? People will either get it or they won\'t, I just don\'t think that\'s going to help much if at all.

That\'s a pretty illogical thing to say.

Explain or don\'t bother posting. Otherwise you\'re just wasting everybody\'s time. Hopefully, at some point, you\'ll figure out it\'s not important what you think, but what is important is why you think it.

Have any of you met Krook? I\'m sure those of you that have will recall that he insults, belittles, and spits in your general direction from almost the first moment you lay eyes on the nasty little Dwarf.
I have not had one complaint about him yet, and -oddly enough- am often thanked in /tells as I insult, spit, and walk away. It is fine if you are RPing a rude character with good intentions, rather than just playing a rude character so as you can insult and degrade folks with impunity.
One thing I often do as I meet a new character with Krook is to say [Pardon Krook, as he is not one of my nicer characters]. It is not really required, but good etiquette.
In parting, a quote....
originally grumbled by Krook in-game
Krook looks about and grumbles about ugly people being allowed on the streets in the daylight.

You\'re one of the worst ones still on the board.:) Hopefully you\'ll be the next to leave.
\"Not caring about being a jerk in real life\" does not follow from \"Wanting to role-play a jerk in a fantasy game\". Though I\'m sure there are some people who fit that description, not everyone who feels the second also follows the first.
Should I dumb it down even more for you?

You can\'t even read what I posted, and you\'re insulting me? Ok, zanzibar, read the purpose of this post...it is about somehow making sure the person in the game knows that you are roleplaying when you are acting like a jerk in game. I asked what the purpose of this was. Why do you really care enough to assure this anonymous person that you are actually roleplaying? The only conclusion I could draw from this is that you don\'t want this person to somehow think less of you for being a jerk.
It has nothing to do with whether or not you act like a jerk in real life, just how the other person your roleplaying with perceives you. Thus my confusion on your reply that it is an illogical statement. It wasn\'t even a statement in any shape or form, it was a question.
I can see the confusion you might get from my post if it was taken out of context but when it is a REPLY TO A THREAD I think taking note of the original post should generally be something you do. I\'m not going to arbitrarily pull something out of thin air.
Also, as far as \"next to leave\", good luck with that. Though I know and you know a lot of people here think the very same thing about you.

Right. It\'s all to do with personal egos, and it has nothing to do with players being disruptive, players going OOC because they\'re angry, players wasting the time of Game Masters with frivilous or groundless petitions, etc etc. It\'s all about personal egos, and worrying about what random people on the internet think of you.:)

It was a simple question zanzibar, there\'s no reason to overreact. I didn\'t say that was the only reason, I was asking for other reasons which you have given me, of course it would have been simpler to just say them instead of being condescending. Why? Because you are wrong, which makes you look stupid.
First off, something signifying that they are roleplaying would not solve the problem of them getting in trouble for it. And that was what I was addressing. I could easily put something such as what was described in the original post, and then go out of character. Either way, you can get reported for it.
You will still have to defend your actions, and point out that you were roleplaying. The same defense anyone else would have to use who didn\'t signify that they were roleplaying beforehand. If you signify that you are but still break the rules you will still be punished for it.
So doing so would actually be pointless, as people are not likely to feel less slighted because you simply told them you are roleplaying. In most cases their going to report you if they were going to do so in the first place. That\'s what happens with anything like this. Whenever I\'ve attacked someones ideas on these boards, what happens the vast majority of the time? They think I\'m attacking them personally. Even if I say I\'m not. No rules are broken, and though it might upset some moderators nothing is going to happen. The same concept could be applied here.
Therefore the only difference would IN FACT be personal egos.

Sarcasm is an overreaction now? I guess I\'m out of the loop.
Your new post is a bit hard for me to comprehend. The message that I get from it is both one that I do not entirely agree with, and it\'s also a very different point than you were making before.
That is to say, you\'re changing the subject.
I believe that what you were saying before was that, in essense, people who RP \"jerks\" don\'t care about people thinking that they\'re \"jerks\" in real life. Quite obviously this simply isn\'t true for a variety of reasons, and I gave a few of those reasons in my previous post.
Now, maybe I am beneath you in intelligence to such a great degree that I still haven\'t understood what it is you\'re saying. Have pity on a fool like me when you reply and rip my analysis to shreds.
Edit: Kiern\'s response to this post was to, once again, pretend that he was originally saying something different than what he was. Further, he claims that he is simply responding to others instead of making accusations and putting questions on the table. Further, he comes out insulting others, then says that he is simply responding to insults made against him.
This is classic forum troll behaviour, and therefore I consider discussion with him to be dead. If someone else expresses interest, or if he changes his ways, I have no problem with starting up the conversation again.

Your logic is a bit hard to comprehend. I rarely understand a single thing you\'re saying. Well I shouldn\'t say that I don\'t understand it, but every time I\'m sure I know what you\'re trying to explain through your terrible vernacular and diction, you oppose it with full force and go off on some wild tangent.
You post with less than 1% of your brain. It scares me. It really does. You make no sense zanzibar, and though I\'ve been in the exact position you now stand on as \"Forum troll\", you offend me none the less.
Please grow a brain. Please use logic when you form a rebuttal. Please stop poking the Kiern.
The whole thread can be summarized in a single sentence, \"Don\'t take the internet so seriously.\"
EDIT: Teehee. I made a boo boo.

Ahahah, okay - enough personal attacks or veiled hints at them. If someone asks anyone else to explain something further, it is great to be curteous and explain it.
Let\'s get back to harassing characters in the game and stop trying to harass each other on the forums.
*edit* Kiern\'s post should be the last on the tangent-like-subject. We have these loops going round and round sometimes when people start veering off the original discussion and start discussing each other and each other\'s posts or word choice. It doesn\'t end nicely, so please avoid it.

Sarcasm is an overreaction when all I did was ask a question, one which you didn\'t understand.
I didn\'t change what I was saying, you misunderstood it, and I\'ve tried explaining it. If the original post confuses you so much just read what my last post was and ignore the original one completely, it doesn\'t matter if you think I\'m changing the subject or not. Because I don\'t, and I\'m fairly certain I know the intention behind my orginal post.
All I did was question the usefulness of such a thing signifying you are roleplaying, and given reasons why I think it is useless. There\'s nothing complex about it. I did use an analogy, but that should only make it easier. And quit making it sound like I\'m the one making condescending posts as per your other \"sarcastic\" post which I quoted. I wouldn\'t waste my time typing this out if I thought you were a complete idiot. You seem to do the opposite, however.

Sorry, I was typing it when you posted that. Hopefully though you see that what I\'ve said has been on topic aside from answering whatever random shot zanzibar takes at me. I say hopefully because if someone actually understood what I was trying to get across (and if they didn\'t it was more then likely my fault) I would like to hear what they have to say..

Well, If nothing else, this post servers to illistrate what OOC harassment looks like.
In game harrassment should center arround the goal of the harrassment. If your role playing a solitary hermit who hates everyone, why bother to show up in town just to call the inhabitants ugly names? You should have a reason to actually be in town. Same goes for guild wars, harrassment of an oposing guild is expected, but not if it does not match up with the in-game reason that the two guilds are at war.
In my opinion, most actions should be done with a touch of humor. Calling someone a \"fat butt\" is not really funny, but saying something like \"after looking at you I now understand why the gates in town are shaped they way they are\" seems a hole lot funnier to me.

PS is about having fun. Someone who spoils others fun is therefor not doing what PS was made for in my opinion. If you roleplay you should try to do it in such a way that most people enjoy themselves.
As for being a jerk. Roleeplaying one is tottally allowed in my book aslong as you keep it roleplaying and ofcourse realistic. Don\'t pretend to be someone who is uncatchable or something like that.
The problem in my book arises when people are being jerks OOC and then say it was becuase their character is a jerk. I know of someone for example who claimed that stealing kills was tottally IC when while he was doing it he didn\'t say a single thing IC and was only talking about things like shortcuts.
If you aren\'t roleplaying you can\'t say those actions then are IC and then you are being a jerk OOC and in my opinion those people should be banned.
