The guide claims that you get 5 Progression Points to start off with? Has this been tossed away without an update to the guide? Just curious cuz I know the only char I\'ve been able to play didn\'t get them.
-
i didn\'t get thoose either... although a starting weapon/glyph and some starting money wouldn\'t be out of the way as starting with rats aren\'t that easy to do by yourself
-
Yep, true. Though we often have generous people in town. I sometimes stand by Harn\'s and give my BS\'es and SS\'es away to the newcomers.
-
you can allways play with your initial character stats/skills, and look for a build that suits your playing style, if you are going to be fighting monsters with weapons look for a build with high strenght, Endurance, light armor and weapon mastery.
if your going on magic ways look for high intelegence, magic way you want to use...

Not that I know of. When I started my character I had zero progression points. I believe everyone starts out that way.

you are prolly looking at an out of date guide...
its not as if five pp will get you far anyway.
-
I think the reason we start naked, is that so many people will generate characters just to loot them of their initial equipment and cash. I know this isn\'t the case with PP as we can\'t tranfer the points. But, you will usually get enough PP to train one level of something fighting your first few rats in the quest to buy your first weapons and armor.
The people this really hurts are those that don\'t want to kill, the \"miners\". As they have no choice but to kill a few rats in the beginning.
This initial phase in the life of a PS character is so short though, that it really is a trivial point to bring up. Maybe not trivial to the one that just read the Players Guide and wants to know where his/her 5 pp are, but trivial to the whole scheme.

I thought this was a well known \"bug\" of the guide (there are many, I don\'t bother to report them--would anybody go to the trouble of fixing them if I edited the guide?)
See this link @ 2.6.1 Progression Points paragraph

The guide I looked at was the one included in my PlaneShift folder, so if its out of date, its up to developers to update it, I would assume. I know you prolly don\'t think its important, but I\'d assume you\'d want people to be able to have correct information given to htem by you.

Its really not that hard to start out with nothing, of course it helps if you have a skill level in Melee combat but rats are not that hard to kill even with low strength.
More often than not, if a newbie asks me for weapons or trias in a clever RP manner and not just OOC like \"can I have some money?\" I am happy to give as are most players I think. I\'m not saying I am going to just give a new player a bunch of trias and a pair of /3 daggers but armor helps alot and the regular weapons that are available from Harnquist will do just fine.
As for the matter of PP\'s most rats only give experience and it is wise to keep an eye on the system window to see what NPC\'s do give PP\'s and try to stick with fighting them. I think starting off with a bit of PP may not be such a bad idea though.
-
Satayne, I don\'t know if you noticed this but you get 1 progression point per 200 experience points. So a rat is 30 exp or so? Then you need to kill 6.67 rats to get 1 pp. That\'s kill 7 get one point, kill 6 get one point, repeat...
Another example, clackers give 50 exp, so you need to kill four for a single pp and most mercs are 200 exp, so you get 1 per kill and most trepors are 2000 exp so you get 10 pp and the big ulber is 8500 exp which is approx. 43 pp...

Thank you Araye, I had never done the math on that before.
A very handy tidbit of info there.
So this emphasizes my point further then, it really isn\'t hard to start with nothing.

In order to prevent ppl from making charecters in order to sell their items for trias and other items there should be a set of novice items that sell for 0 at the stores. this way ppl could still have something to help them out at the start of the game without having to go play 12 hours just to buy ur fist weapon / glyph / armor / item.
-
Teamwork people, just team up with some more experienced hunters or fighters and you can have plenty of PP\'s and trias in no-time. This is a roleplaying game with a very nice community so take advantage of that ;)
-
\"This initial phase in the life of a PS character is so short though\" I disagree, I\'ve been playing PS for about 10 - 12 hours now and still lack armor and glyphs, I also agree with twelvetables\' view on getting starting items which sell for 0 to overcome people trying to sell their starting items.
-
I too like twelvetable\'s idea, very clever.
And phischphood, I know 12 hours seems like a long time, but Satayne and I have 1000\'s of logged hours. 12 hours is nothing to us and seems short now. Not that I\'m belittling your pain at the moment.
Zan also hits the nail on the head - teamwork!
So often we play games on our own, therefore we develop the mentality that we can do it alone. This game is different. It has been specifically designed to prevent the lone wolf mentality. It can be done, I was a loner for my first 100 hours or so. But it is the dev\'s mission in life it seems to force the characters to interact, to roleplay. And if you don\'t, the game is very unforgiving.
I\'m usually playing PS. If you need help, ask me.

I agree Zan. It is a nice way to get to know the players and get involved in roleplays. When I first started I teamed up with a wonderful group of people who taught me where to go and what to slay to earn trias and pp. The bonus to knowing this group of people was I got to know alot of the community and felt at home in no time. :D

/me can\'t understand the problem.....
When I am out and about, and I get asked where the sewers are, or \"I am new, can you help me\" (which to me is much better than \"I am new can I have....\") I usually have a set pattern.
This is how it goes.....(summarised version)..
Follow me ....
this is harnquist .... he sells and trains etc etc .... here are 2 swords i just bought off him as a welcome present ... blah blah blah...
this is percival...he trains blah blah blah ....
this is the sewer entrance ....
these are the rats .......
this is how to group .....
(all IC of course)
and so on ..... fun for me, fun for them, and it only cost me the price of two swords. Excellant value.
The best thing when, a couple of days later you are asked \"I have my own swords now, do you want yours back ?\" Very heartwarming Indeed.
