I\'ve never been a very experienced player in planeshift, but I\'ve been around a few months ago, disappeared, and now, gladly, I\'m back again. :]
One of the things I\'ve always most admired in this project is the commitment to rp. That\'s the most fun of planeshift, the rp interaction.
So, how to deal with people that hangs around hydlaa with swords in their hands, calling anyone passing by to a duel, without even the consideration to greet their possible future enemies?!?!? One of these rude people even called my character a bad name, I suppose (for my character have never heard such a word before, \"nob\", \"noob\", or something like that...), just because i wouldn\'t engage him in a fight without talking to him first....
Well, now being more serius... privately, i asked this specific player if he had ever read something about the game and what was it about. In his words, i should read more about this game, because it is truly about \"being the stronger\" and the \"faster\" to \"prove yourself\", and i was a noob because i didn\'t get it. Of course I lost it a little and i\'ve become rude myself at the time (no excuses for that...).
So tell me, fellows, is this true? Is this what planeshift is about now? If it is, tell me right away, no mercy needed. But if still isn\'t.... can\'t we do something about it?
Thank you all
Abra?os! Paz!

Well said!
It\'s up to all of us to \'remind\' people what the game is about. There have been so many new characters lately and those of us who have been around a while are getting watered down. Thanks for the reminder!

Well there is nothing that says one can\'t rp becoming the strongest, most arrogant ba$tard that has something to prove to his mommy. And maybe noob is a curse word in Hydlaa. Maybe it means trepor dung? I don\'t know. Also, if everyone in Hydlaa walks around with weapons drawn, then isn\'t it normal to walk around with weapons drawn? Why do you assume it isn\'t? You\'re the one that is not rp\'ing if \"you\" bring \"Earthly courtesies\" with you when you enter Yliakum. It\'s just like the American Old West. It was common to see people carrying sidearms - everywhere. That may not have been considered appropiate in \"New York City\". Yliakum is a dangerous place and if it\'s residents don\'t feel safe, they may always have swords drawn.
So my suggestion to you is to rp back as your character would given those circumstances. All you know, is what your character experiences \"in game\". Don\'t forget that.
Araye
[Don\'t be offended, I do know exactly what you where saying in your post; that sometimes people are obviously OOC. Just don\'t play their game and stay IC. It does no good to go back and forth - IC, OOC expecting them to get it. With time, they\'ll learn.]
-
The good point:
PlaneShift is not the place for Hack\'n\'Slash-Powerlevelers. They play it some time, get bored of camping Rogues and leave... never seen again. Fine :)
In my opinion there should be more rules concerning what behaviour is allowed ingame. I saw many great RPers leave because they couln\'t stand the flood of H\'n\'S-Kiddies.
Greetings.
-
There is very strict rules to dulling, in the system, all outo so decline and if they get three bye bye.
-
Yes, i agree that one could rp like that, no problem, of course. The courtesies i mentioned, in fact, were between an \"Earthly joke\" (oh, my poor sense of humor in a foreign language) and my character\'s expectations (but he\'s becoming more conscious about \"impolite\" people). And yes, people carry many weapons in their hands in Hydlaa, I\'ve noticed that.
But as you\'ve said, you know what i was talking about, so, to put things in other terms, what bothers me is that people (NOT ALL OF THEM) are joining the game without the concern to read a little about it, and, SOMETIMES, what is much worse in my oppinion, just don\'t care about other player\'s fun. Of course people can go fighting each other, and be arrogant and all, and call names etc, but what worries me is when some people believe we should all be doing the same things - in this example, fighting. i would be terrible misguided myself if i started to curse people (not the characters, but the players) who don\'t stop to talk to my character. I know you\'ve understand, i\'m explaining more so this thread won\'t become a \"go away fighters vs fighters rights\" one.
I\'ve taken no offenses whatsoever from your replie. In fact, i think I\'ll make your final suggestion (to stay IC) into my personal dogma, from now on :] - why i didn\'t think about that them? - But, beyond that, wouldn\'t be nice some kind of explanation about IC and OOC in the game, I mean, when you\'re making a character and all that stuff, so new players would at least be more excited - or conscious - about it? What people think about this?
Farewell!

Alvarez, your point is well made. I agree. But, it is expected that everyone has read the players guide to get a feel of what they\'re getting into. You and I and \"most\" others have. Most have decided to play PS because we want to roleplay.
BUT.
How do you stop the 12 year old (that has no concept of rp or patience to read) from playing? Or the 28 year old that just wants to cause trouble?
My answer: you train them how to role play by \"role playing whatever circumstances you\'re given.\"
Don\'t \"let them ruin your game.\" We can\'t expect the rp police to show up and enforce the law broken by the \"he\'s not rp\'ing!\" criminals.
IDEA: Maybe the dev\'s can set up a few stockades for these crimimals. Then we would have something to do with all those apples we\'ve collected. Maybe tomatoes could be released too?
I really don\'t mean to trivialize your post or complaint, but we, the role players, have the power to change them by our own actions. It may be frustrating at times, but we must stay the course.
Araye
Also, if you\'re 12 or 28 or offended, please don\'t be. I was merely siting two examples of people I\'ve encountered in the past. They were specific people and not generalizations. There are two 12 year olds (that I know of) in my guild that I enjoy playing with very much!

I personally have to disagree with the \"solution\" that has, it seems, reached an agreement in this thread.
Reacting In Character to clearly Out Of Character sentences, doesn\'t help at all. I\'ve seen it during the time I\'ve played this game. Trying to stay IC wondering about what a computer might be, or similar things, is becoming a funambulist when there\'s no need to, and, to my eyes, the RPer doing that isn\'t doing any favour nor for the mantainance of the RP atmosphere (since all the possible rpers around know that the computer reference, in this example, was absolutely OOC) nor for the one that stated the sentence about the computer (he/she might perfectly not be aware of how to explicitly separate IC from OOC) so my suggestion, in those cases is:
a) You don\'t have your day: Just ignore the sentence, but please don\'t start an IC argument similar to \"Computers? I\'ve never heard about those... have you? *turns to face the Ylian drinking at his side* \"
b) You\'re not having a bad day and feel more or less cheerful:
Explain that one the concept of Out of Character, the purpose of the game, and the way that a player has to denote his/her OOC sentences through the use of brackets.
I\'ve seen some players that never required that explanation, either because they come from another RP game with similar rules, or because they read some forum threads; but I\'ve also encountered lots of others players that didn\'t, that for them the use of brackets was like a bug, or simply meaningless. Once explained about the meaning, and the reason to separate the IC part from the OOC part, the ratio of positive reactions, I\'d say is fairly high.
-
Well my position is that there should never be any OOC, bracketed or otherwise. Put OOC in /tell. If someone says things that are OOC, explain it in /tell so I don\'t have to see it in my chatbox.
I personally just ignore the OOC on a bad day and run off.

At least tell them to join the CoV instead of your silly roleplaying :P

When people challenge me for no reason, I just kill them in a cheep way. After switching to daggers, I\'ll type kill them, or I\'ll use light green potions, or I\'ll have my attack start the instant I accept the challenge.
It\'s a nuisance and they do it for OOC reasons, but it\'s still possible for that stuff to happen IC. For instance, a madman or drunkard. If you\'re doing it IC though, say something to show it!

You\'re one to talk Araye, since I\'ve only known you to be part of the problem. You\'ve challenged me for no good reason on several occasions and you\'ve made numerous OOC personal insults against me, all because I took a rogue you were after in the arena and because I killed your character after you randomly challenged me. Not to mention your in-game profile! It was horribly OOC. When I told you, what did you do? Did you replace it with something better? No. Out of spite, you deleted it and left it blank. And let\'s not get into the Xillix incident...
Araye says: Shal, what is your beef with Xillix?
Araye says: wouldn\'t sleep with you?
So yes, I don\'t think you\'re one to talk when it comes to inappropriate in-game conduct.
-
@zanzibar
The \"unprovoked attacks\" were assasination attempts. Failed and pathetic, but assassination attempts nonetheless.
And the Xillix beef thing was a /tell - which I have explained I use for OOC. If you check your log, I think you\'ll find that to be a true statement. If I\'m wrong, then I appologize as it was never my intent to have that in open forum.
And no, I don\'t have a problem with your \"taking a rogue\" as I don\'t own any \"spawn point\". It is part of the game and part of your character to be that person - rude and obnoxious. I must also state that I don\'t equate your IG character with Zanzibar. I judge the two separately.
I may show up to try to stop your character\'s bullying when fellow guildmembers or an ally calls me, but I don\'t personally seek you out. I don\'t have time for it. There are too many people to help.
I also don\'t then go to a forum OOC and complain \"he\'s bullying people in the arena, wah wah.\" Because I know you\'re playing that type of character.
As for profiles - profiles are OOC. Who walks around with a billboard of information? And yes, using it for an advertisement is OOC. But since one thing is OOC, why not fill it in with OOC information? Especially when the Million Trias Tournament is about to happen! See you all there, April 10th 2005 at 6:30 pm EST!
So before you get all personal, look at all the facts.
I have nothing against you and agree with a good many of your (zanzibar\'s) comments and ideas.
Don\'t bring the game to the forum.

And that\'s why before each incident, you made OOC insults in the public chat, and after each incident, you made OOC insults using /tells.

(23:35:48) Araye says: Shal, what is your beef with Xillix?
(23:35:49) Shalmaneser says: It is not yours to grant. It is not yours to share, own, or give.
(23:36:28) Shalmaneser says: Xillix?

(23:36:32) Araye says: yes

(23:36:45) Araye says: liar?

(23:36:52) Araye says: she lied about what
(23:37:02) Shalmaneser says: Being Octarch.
(23:37:03) Proglin says: She\'s NOT! a liar!

Your insults are continuous and public. They are not in character, and they constitute harassment.

I\'ve bullied no one, and your definition of \"help\" is twisted.

This thread is about people going OOC in game. You made a comment about it, but I consider you to be a part of the problem. I did not start a thread about you.

Don\'t bring the game to the forum? This forum is about the game...

1) I\'m glad you posted the log.
As you can see - my character is provoking yours to action. I was attempting to get your full attention. (I didn\'t know about Shalmaneser\'s habitual potion use at that time though)
What\'s OOC about that?
You say each incident I made OOC comments? You posted one. We\'ve fought three times and your first example is clearly IC on my part.
2) I constantly insult you publically? Where is the log of that?
3) I never said zanzibar bullied anyone. I said your character does. It\'s a well known fact.
4) My character can \"twist\" definitions as he sees fit. They are his to define. His definitions, as all of our definitions, are generated from our experiences. I don\'t have to abide by your definitions as I am not \"Shal\".
5) Yes I have read your profile - you basically made me. You state that Shal wouldn\'t stand out in a crowd. I beg to differ. Shal is VERY easy to spot.
6) And yes, I think you\'re taking this all personally. My character attacking or \"provoking\" you is not OOC with who he is. I\'m sorry you feel Zanzibar is being attacked. I don\'t mean to hurt your (zanzibar\'s) feelings. It wasn\'t intended.
7) The game into the forum comment you took wrong. I should have been clearer. I was trying to be punny. Let me clarify - I meant not to bring the emotions that are generated IC to a real life OOC forum. Shal and the character Araye, know nothing of forums.
Sorry to have hurt your feelings,
Araye
EDITED for typos - hope I didn\'t miss any.... oh is that what the preview button is for?

Just a comment from me:
They are not \"profiles,\" they\'re descriptions - and they are supposed to be very much IC, offering others a glimpse at the physical properties of your character - attire, markings, accessories, perhaps common and obviously visible mannerisms, etc. Anyone using it for announcements, to list their store inventory, to mention the names of those they\'ve dueled, etc., is not using it for its original and appropriate purpose. There\'s no one going around stopping people from putting whatever they want in those (as long as nothing is vulgar or offensive, of course), but you should definitely be using the window for descriptions and descriptions only, with occasional OOC comments if necessary (example: [OOC: My character is aggressive and likes to sneak attacks on others. Please don\'t consider me a spammer.] Or [OOC: My character is slightly telepathic, so I may send you a tell occasionally asking for some information about your own character to give back during RP.]
-
I see your point Kary, but I\'ll just wait until the skins are ready. I hear that they are coming soon (tm). Then people will have all sorts of visible descriptions and won\'t have to \'read\' everyone that walks by.
grin
****************
But, but they said soon (tm)!!!
****************
-
Yes you will ;) There won\'t be 200 skins to choose from, and everyone will still \"decorate\" their characters in a different way. That\'s the point of the descriptions anyway. To say that they are meant for OOC purposes is off.
Skins won\'t come as soon as you may think.

He\'s plain looking, but if you know who he is then of course you\'ll recognize him.

And yes, I think you\'re taking this all personally.
I see it as a personal dispute, but I haven\'t taken it personally. I\'m just saying that you\'ve been hypocritical. If those challenges you made were actually in character, then you wouldn\'t have spent the next five minutes complaining to me using /tells about how I must have cheated to win etcetera.
-
Please don\'t drag me into your disgreement about who did/said what, why and when...but I would like to make a point about posting logs.....
If you have a desperate need to post logs as evidence, I hope you have asked those not involved in your argument (but happen to be in part of the log you posted), whether or not they have any objection to them being posted.
/me has flashbacks to the collapse of a guild (previous MMORPG) because of what was accidentaly in a posted log as proof of something not even remotely connected.
Just my trais worth...please don\'t flame me :P
Off topic ? I suppose so ... sorry ... back to topic then .....

If they wanted to H\'n\'S, what are they doing here? This is an mmoRPg. Here, you RP. Runescape, AdventureQuest, and Final Fantasy series are where the H\'n\'S\'ers should go, we don\'t want their kind here.
-
I think the statement that \"we don\'t want their kind\" is a little misdirected. I don\'t want H\'n\'S\'ers who violate the idea of \"in character\" or \"in world\" action or conversations, bringing everyone else down. If someone wants to play the (publicly) silent type while hunting most of the time, and only really interacting to buy and sell things (in an acceptable manner), and spend the rest of his time having an OOC chat with his group, that\'s ok.
Essentially, I don\'t care what they want out of the game (hacking and slashing, chatting, or a well-played character who seeks to interact socially as well as gain wealth or skills) as long as they don\'t break the atmosphere for people who want to immerse themselves in a fantasy world.

:D Thank you Karyuu, you taught me a bit something there. I wasn\'t sure what was considered IC or OOC so at first I was undecided if I should put my Studios prices and such in my description. Now I know.... thanks.
As for roleplay, if someone is being annoying and avoiding playing by the rules you can always treat their character as a crazy person. Or someone who had a spell casted on them that went bad, or something imaginative. This sets an example to the person in question as well. If they see you roleplaying and acting confused they might begin to understand what is expected. I have learned that if you treat being ooc as a big issue it will become one. If you choose to just work with it, and roleplay it out in your own way this issue begins to not exsist. When in doubt petition if the person becomes out of control and starts to ruin everyones roleplay. It is just that simple. :)
-
Well, there are times when the \"OOC\" info such as store inventories can be useful, for example if you\'re roleplaying as giving someone a piece of parchment with the items you have listed, and then you\'re sending them a /tell to look at your description :) It could work.
My main point was simply about the description box\'s real purpose, which is very much IC. Even though all that character creation info gets put in, which I dislike greatly :x
