Title: New Forums
Post by: Talad on April 24, 2006, 01:07:03 am
Hi, we just switched to the new forums, but there still a lot to do. We would like to improve the overall skin of the forums, making it more PlaneShift-like and also change those terrible smileys :)

Just wait few days before posting tons of requests for forums.

I'd like to put in a vote for the smileys on http://www.invisionadds.com/files/index.php?act=file&f=213

Round smileys are so last year :P

Yeah, our's were so much better. These newER ones are close, but still too crisp. The other ones were pixilated, and somehow looked better.

I'm thinking we need to replace the default pool of avatars with some more PS-y ones as well ;]

Oooh. This is cool. I tried to post and got this:

Guess I have to re-do my bookmarks. :p

Now THAT is neato. I always wondered why they never thought of that. I like the smileys too. This batch is nice.

;D

 :thumbup:

Yep, I do.  Also, I was messing around with the thread options.  Very neat.  Really yenjoy the stats it keeps.  Question though, i take non important people like me do not have avy ability?  There is options for pre-existing ones and such, but upon selecting them, nothing happens after pushing the save changes button.  I don't mind not having an avy, its just it might confuse someone.  Just thinking ahead so that the forums don't get filled with "OMG why can't I get an avy!!!??!!!  Theres the option but it don't do nothing!!!!11one"

 :innocent:

Oh yeah, I also seem to have set an option that has the newest post showing first, rather than it being last.  It is confusing the crap out of me, so I'll think we'll be changing that one back to like it was before.

Edit x2:  Found it and changed back.  Much better.  now to figure out how to get it to go back tot the topic after a post instead of taking me to the forum page.

The avatars still need to be sorted out - I can't have one either right now, and the options for them are confusing for both the forum admins and regular users. We'll get through it though :)

I know you are still woring on the themes and such, but one small suggestion I'd like to make as you work on putting new themes together.

Perhaps you could bold the font on the stickies and such to differenciate them a bit from the regular posts?  Or maybe change the background color on them.  Just having the sticky icon by the post, well, I can live with it, but I liked that feature of the last forum quite a bit.  Other than that, I'm really liking everything so far.  Ok, I'll be quite and let ye do your vodoo that you do.

I've poked in the SMF theme engine, and it requires a little bit of PHPing to do that. Hopefully our forum-themer knows how!

And the database was carried over so we don't have to rejoin, get to keep our post count, and don't have to start completely from scratch.  Best of all worlds!!

I spent a good share of time PHP coding/forum theming for a Diablo II/Blizzard clan back in the day.

So. . .
It shouldn't be too hard.
I'd actually like to see what y'all come up with.

Okay, one more minor thing, then I'm done, really.

Umm, is there an option to set how many posts to display per page like in the old forum?  Maybe I'm just being blind and not seeing it under the options?  If it's not currently available, you think it could be?  I really liked having the 40 posts per page thing like I could on the old forums.  But still, this new one kicks major arse none the less. \\o//

Replacing this...
Code: [Select]
.smalltext
{
font-size: x-small;
font-family: Tahoma, arial, helvetica, serif;
}
...with this...
Code: [Select]
.smalltext {
font: 0.75em tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;
}
...would fix a browser discrepancy:
(http://reisio.com/temp/psf-discrepancy.png)
That sort of font sizing isn't always so hot.* (http://www.w3.org/TR/CSS21/fonts.html#value-def-absolute-size)

Can we have a "posts in the last 24 hours" like on the other forum?

Yes I do see "Show unread posts since last visit" and "Show new replies to your posts", but if I have read all the ".. posts since last visit" and want to revisit one of them I cant see a nice fast way like the "24 hours" button in the other forum  :surrender:

It seems that even if people do like this new forum, some of them really hate the default theme. I've been concentrating on the PS website for now, so it may be a while before I get to playing with the forum, considering I have some commercial projects I have to work on as well. However, I made this quickie theme, which may be more pleasant for some people. It's nothing major, just a . CSS modification, and a few trivial "graphics" that should replace the default ones. I didn't edit any buttons and majority of the graphics. Here's the link:

Quick Theme (http://beta.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=344B25BF70D143D1)

Some of the default buttons/graphics won't quite be in "harmony" with this theme but it may still be better overall and keep the angry anti-default folk happy here.  :D

Try it out.

How exactly are people supposed to use this theme? o.O

looks like something Talad would have to install.

Heh no, obviously I meant that Talad or acraig would have to install it. Just use admin panel to "copy default theme", it will create two .php and one .css file. Replace .css with mine, replace the default filenames with the modified "graphics". The filenames are identical.  :P

Just a quick query with the new forum do we have a new Mod (Santiago) or an old one with a new name? If a new one then I would hope it would be someone with more than 1 post to their name :)

Not a particularly satisfying answer, is it such a big secret?

as for post counts how can one moderate a community without some level of involvement?
Title: Re: New Forums
Post by: Karyuu on April 26, 2006, 12:52:17 am
Santiago has been with the community for several years, and as I stated, is known very well and trusted by the team. Santiago wishes to help out without being directly involved, and I could use an extra pair of hands around the forum. One can help in moderation very well through editing double-posts, removing flames, moving threads to their better-appropriate boards, etc.

Santiago's job isn't to moderate the community, but the posts here.

If you have any complaints about the moderation itself at any time, feel free to send them in :) Otherwise, "Who are you? Tell me, tell me!" inquiries aren't going to sit well. Relax, we wouldn't give mod powers to anyone who cannot use them, or doesn't deserve them.

Thats a better answer, my main reason for asking is related to Kerols information thread.
A short post explaining what you just have should have been a common courtesy to those of the community who do post here.

Secondly if you need help all you have to do is ask I am sure you'd get plenty of applications from which to chose suitable mod

@Drey I ought to by now I've been here long enough but the "Team" is all that seems to matter these days
Title: Re: New Forums
Post by: Karyuu on April 26, 2006, 01:16:25 am
I'm not drowning in work with the forums enough to need to look at applications :) Santiago's desire to help out was simply welcomed, and the individual is most suitable. We wouldn't choose anyone who but raised their hand and cried out "I want to do it!"

There is no need to antagonize anyone, though, and I don't quite appreciate the "Team" comment. Don't be a little ball of negativity.

You can consider Santiago a bot that quickly sweeps up minor trash :P Though I doubt "Saint Iago" would appreciate that comment xD; San isn't going to be making posts, so there will only be minor involvement. Now stop worrying about little things like this, seriously :)
