Title: Better Physics
Post by: SgtHulka9 on April 26, 2006, 02:24:38 am
I would like to see a little better physics in the game. I know thats a big thing, but this is a wish list isn't it? The sliding down a hill and dying is really annoying. I mean I'm sliding, why should I die? I go really far off into the forest, when I slide down a wee hill and splat, can't move... "Your dead yadaa yadaa yadaa." I'm just saying, that whole thing is getting really annoying. Some drops are not even a drop, I don't even leave the ground in most of them. If you want me to die sliding down a hill, at least make my guy fall down! He just stands there, I think he is alive too. This is just a wish list though, as I have no idea how it is making a game. So I can't really criticize until I make one. I respect you guys alot for putting out such an awsome free game, but thats the only thing bugging me the most. Thank you for the game \\o//

The idea is that when an incline is steep enough, you fall, and it doesn't have to be straight down.  It's not so much as a slide as it's falling down and you're hitting the ground on your way to the bottom, if that makes any sense.

I agree though that the physics of the game need to be improved.  There's even basic stuff like momentum - why does my character change direction in mid air based on the way he faces?

I think that with the point you raised though, I don't think it's a change in the physics that the devs need to do, so much as a falling animation.  If my character falls, he should do a little bit of a stumble or roll.  And then Karyuu will post saying "We're working on it!  All in good time, it's coming Soon(tm)!"

CS futzed with rag doll stuff a bit back.  That'd be nice to put in sometime, if it's possible.

I know this might take a little too much work, but...

Eventually will the walking speed of the character actually match up with the movement? Right now the foot that's supposed to be planted on the floor during walking actually isn't.

A lot of the animations need work (the combat, for example, is never in time, and some of the monsters don't animate at all when attacking you - unless the trepor wiggles its arse at you to attack :) ). I can put up with minimal animation whilst the dev's work on content though.

Nice, I don't even have to post here anymore :D

The wish for better animations and animation controls is seconded. (Fourthed? Hundrethededed? Eternalized-ed-ish-ness? Gah.) However, before new animations are created we really have to get all the basic animations for every model out - little things like sit, greet, etc.

Speaking of dieing from falling, I just died falling off a 2ft drop on the stairs.... I rest my case :-X

And I'm new, so I didn't even see or hear about all those other times. So sorry if its... well it has been so sorry i posted it... again.

Don't run down stairs, it's dangerous!   :D

The only time I ever find my character dying from a fall is on the hills - otherwise, a run down some stairs is nothing. And my character only has ~100HP. Weirdness.

Before the major wipe some months ago where we started everything from scratch, my character only had around 65 HP. :P

Anyway, I've died from falling down stairs, but it's more in the Arena when I'm already a bit injured, and not using a maxed out character.  I think it's realistic though.

erm.. well, the thing is that physics aren't really a part of the game, I mean, unless they add steam powered bikes or something, or destructable enviroments, as far as I know, falling is the only thing involving gravity

AFAIK CS has support for -> Open Dynamics Engine (http://www.ode.org/). This is what would be needed, isn't it ?

@IronHead -> Yliakean Technology (http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=19849.msg217816#msg217816)

I saw a video of CS's ragdoll capabilities once, it's somewhere on the CS website. If it's implemented, PS wouldn't even need death animations, you would have ragdoll. The physics behind the ragdoll could be also used for fall damage, maybe.

With this being the wishlist forum and all, it's not that I care if I lose health running down the stairs, but that there's no message telling me I've lost health. You just watch your bar fall and if you don't have the information clicked, you don't see it.

Just like how it says "You attack X and do 7.64 damage" in the system window I'd like to see "You fall down the stairs and injure yourself for 15.24 damage" or whatever it is. At least this will serve as a reminder not to run or jump down stairs again.

I'd like to see ragdoll greeting and sitting animations based on physics sims :P

"Shwa! *wave* *slap* *collapse*"

@Jeraphon: Well you shouldn't get fall dmg going down stairs... so it would be weird to have a custom message for that. But that is a good point nonetheless, perhaps the health bar needs to be more prominent, or changes in health while outside combat need to draw more attention?

Okay, well maybe it wouldn't say "You fall down the stairs' but I do believe that there should be a measure of falling damage. If you jump off the roof of the tavern I expect you to - as they used to say in Quake - "crater" or at the very least take damage. So I'd accept "You take X falling damage." for whatever.

In regards to animations for things like "sit" and "greet" the dwarf greet works okay, but the dwarf sit seems awkward. You hit z and you sit, then you stand and you can't move (as if you're frozen sitting from a standing position.) If you hit z again, you sit and can move once more, even while the sit animation activates (so you get a sort of butt-sliding animation.) Has this been reported?

The stand animation interrupts the sitting one sometimes because there are supposed to be two basic animations - sit, and sit idle, which is a variation. Since there are no sit idle animations at the moment, for some reason the stand is used. I would much prefer that the sit just continues all the way through. The sit-and-can-move thing has been reported, yes.

The only quarral I have with it is the stairs falling. I think that its becuase of the jerkyness and model of the stairs. This could easily be fixed with a few invisible planes on the stairs which would:

A: stop the jerkyness of going up and down and smooth it all out
B: fix the need to walk down stairs instead of run and jump down themthen fall flat on our faces and break our necks.

That would be the best soluton, yes. I play Guild Wars and there they handle the stairs problem the same. There is simply a flat invisible plane above the stairs. You don't really notice it, only if you turn the camera a lot you can see that you "float" a tiny bit above the stairs.
