Title: Linux Guild - Anyone interested?
Post by: Naylor on May 01, 2006, 11:34:00 pm
Hi i would like to join or help setup a linux guild for users of linux. I just wondered if anyone was interested.

Of course we can use the idea of linux as well as what it means computer wise. The open source ethos, ethics, freedom etc - and we can talk linux talk also out of role if this is what other expect.

As there a less linux users i imagine it would be good to stick together.

we can have meetings in the tavern at set times etc and basically i'm looking to talk to others on what they want to set up, how we can go about it and about having some meetings in planeshift, possibly in the tavern or wherever to start talking about sorting this out.

let me know and also message me in the game - my name is Naylor

thanks.

I don't think a guild centering on subject matter that has been frequently politicized by Che Guevara worshippers and Woodstock attendees is a good idea.

And I run Linux. Go figure. :P

Please check the "Creating Your Guild" important sticky right at the top of this forum section :} Guilds on OOC (out-of-character) subject matter and formed for out-of-character reasons are a no-no in PlaneShift.

the idea is for users of linux to be in a guild together, within which we use a role play scenario as a group. although the group is tux or called linux we have it as an ethic holding group together so it's not out of character. it's simply a basis of the ideology of the group. we're like the anticapitalists of the scenario if you like as well as many other ideologies.

not only is it about common interests but there is more validity as a group to have a united voice than some other guilds.

My recommendation for you to take a look at the "Creating Your Guild" sticky remains. Please take a look to learn how to make your guild both interesting and acceptable for the community, because you got a rather difficult start here :}

*edited to add*

Your thread about this in the Linux forum was a duplicate, which isn't allowed, and a thread on a guild fits here better. Please make sure to look over the Forum Rules whenever you have the time.

thanks for the advice. i did read the sticky. i just wanted to talk it over with anyone interested so we can make something valid for the game. i wanted  to see if any interest. but i amount aware we don't want an out of character guild or anything pointless. possibly a back story of a belief system called linux etc. but i want to talk as a group and not just make ip something cheesey myself. if anyone wants to help let me know.

Good luck, then :} One more thing - try not to use words like "Linux" in your RP history or background if you are aiming for real credibility and immersion in the game world. Fairly straight-forward. Any references to real life only pull you out of roleplay.

I remember you asking me and Ponengey if we used Linux ingame. At least you made it OOC, but you should learn more about people you try recruiting. Even if they use Linux, you may be recruiting some newbie who doesn't know the first thing about what he's doing. Or, you may be recruiting an experienced roleplayer. Of course, you're more likely to get the newbie, because an experienced roleplayer would have chances for more reasonable guilds, and linux to them is completely OOC.

it's simply a basis of the ideology of the group

Its software. It has no ideology. Free and open source software is simply a wish of Linux developers.

As for the rest of it - since I do have a bit to say - I'll continue it in a PM to you. I doubt this needs to be dragged on here.

(sorry, I deal with this sort of thing all the time :P)

you can make a forum, but creating a guild based on ooc reasons doesn't belong in planeshift

hey sorry to offend everyone. it was just an idea for a bit of fun. whether we call it something different or whatever i thought the freedom, open source ethos may be appliable to an ingame group without. i've gone about it the wrong way asking people ooc but my heart was in the right place. nevermind - sorry if i was out of order.

I don't think you actually offended anyone, its just that most people don't see the point of a guild of this type.  Actually its been suggested before, and there was even an ingame linux guild for a while though its not around much anymore.  Us linux users stick together by hanging out in the Linux Specific Issues area of the forum and helping when we can.

I am somehow troubled by the linux requirement. It doesnt fit at all into Roleplaying to judge some character because his controller doesnt use the same OS. It's the same for things like age being a prerequisite or real life gender. What's next? Restricions for guild joining because of skin-color?

Although a guild based on the same believes, ideas, hobbies, etc. sounds reasonable (people with the same "thing" together in one Guild), I shouldn't create something in the world of Yliakum based on something which isn't there...

Your thought was good, but it would generate questions or discussions which shouldn't be here...  ;)

Top 10 ways to RP a Windows Guild:
----------------------------------------------------------

    * 10. Act childish to simulate fischer price style luna theme.
    * 9. If there is a problem, speak strangely and give no useful information whatsoever.
    * 8. When moving between two activities, such as mining and fighting, act confused and break the utility you were using before you started something new.
    * 7. Periodically recreate your character so that the time you put into training was lost, simulating doezens of reports lost during my high school years.
    * 6. Every time you die scream BLUE BLUE BLUE, until it becomes known as the "Blue Scream of Death".
    * 5. Often "crash" into walls and then refuse to respond to anyone.
    * 4. Pretending not to notice, send random people your credit card and paypal account information.
    * 3. Call all npc monsters bugs, then refuse to attack them because they aren't serious, even the ulbernaughts.
    * 2. Keep your password saved in an unencrypted file so anyone can access your account.
    * 1. Make sure every member of the guild has the same permissions  as the guild leader

Top 10 ways to Roleplay a Linux guild:

*10.  Write a hack to replace the planeshift user interface with an entirely text based one, because "you dont need that fancy crap".
*9.  Whenever you get an item, you have to go and change 6 of your other items because they're not compatible.
*8.  You also have to buy 4 new items because the item got has critical dependancies.
*7.  Whenever someone asks for help, you merely say "RTFM" and walk away.
*6.  Know every single bug in the system, and get offended when people dont know that walking backwards at a 53 degree angle 4m from the tavern will cause low grade items to sell for 20% more when 15 or more players are in your guild.  Who doesnt know that?
*5.  You never buy an item, you always craft it yourself.  You constantly loudly proclaim that the item you crafted for free is far supurior to any item that anyone else has, and was a fool to pay for.
*4.  All your characters are named after penguins.
*3.  You often have seizures and freeze, but thats ok, since its not as much as the windows guild (you think), and it's not your guild's fault, its the location you're in.  Or the temperature.  Or the time of day.  Or your character.  You were only messing around anyway.  Its not the guild.
*2  Be online for 60 days, even if you're not doing anything, just because you can.  You are also under the missapphresion someone cares.
*1.  You constantly spam the window's guild users with duel challenges screaming "Im better than you and I can kill you, you whimp".  Whenever someone accepts the challenge you lose, but that doesnt count because the fight wasnt fair because the windows guild have too much money from monopolysing the spawn points.

Top 10 ways to roleplay a Mac Guild:

*10.  You're all women.  The only men in your guild are gay.
*9.  Everyone in your guild is enki because they're so looovely and pretty looking.
*8.  No one in your guild wears normal colours.  Everyone has dyed their hair green and wears a ridiculous fluro vest.
*7.  You constantly proclaim you are better than the windows guild, but never actually fight them.
*6.  You spend 6 years ridiculing how stupid the weapons the windows guild uses are.  Finally you gain enough strength to use them, and instantly proclaim they are best weapons ever invented and you shall now conqueor the world.
*5.  Everyone in your guild thinks they're a musician or artist.
*4.  You dont roleplay planeshift, you 'experience' it.
*3.  None of the weapons anyone else uses will work for you.  Or the quests.  Or the items.  That doesnt matter.  The few you have are far superior to everything else.
*2.  Every character in your guild has a goddamn small "i" before their name.  You all think it's cool and makes you look different.  Everyone is too busy laughing to tell you how stupid it is.
*1.  You constantly spam the window's users guild with marriage requests.  (You like annoying them, but you're not brave enough to risk a fight).  You're not quite sure who these 'linux' people are.
