I noticed that, like quite a few MMO's, Planeshift has no way of making any money whatsoever. Basically all the proper MMO's i have heard of have some way of making money, be it subscription like World of Warcraft, optional subscription for improvement like Runescape, the NX Cash system in that ghey (pardon the insult) little game Meyple Story or the one-off payments of games like City of Villains. But Planeshift has nothing.
I'm not saying I WANT this to happen (which i definitely don't; i dont want these rich-in-rw people running around with 1337Z0R!!!!11one!shift+1 weapons just because they have the money to spare) but do the PS devs have plans?
-
It seems counterintuitive, but they have no plans of making money on this ever.
-
This is a hobby, and we do it for fun :] The aim is to create a completely fully free MMO with absolutely no strings attached, so if this goal ever changes, a lot of the devs will just put up their hands and leave - because we're not here to involve money.
-
Not only are they not making money, it seems they're paying for some things out of their own pockets, such as webhosting for website and forum, which is quite commendable. =)
-
And we're all already loaded...
Ok so maybe not. :P But just like people play sport for a hobby, we develop PS as our hobby :D Aren't we cool?
-
I think its amazing how nice some people can be. I also have to say I am impressed. This is what I call using your hobby for good use. \\o//
-
they have jobs other than PS. they probably split it 75 : 25 between them and the PS project.
-
Yeah I guess it's nice, but i quote from Beau, "they probably split it 75:25 between them and the PS project" Doesnt that make a total of 100? So their lives are 100% well, job and game devving? My point being, i'd think the devs would occasionally want a reward for their devotion to this, or at least give them some slack to fit some more into that 75:25? Perhaps a donation section would suit you guys?

We don't currently accept monetary donations. We have no real need for them right now! However, the engine we use does. Feel free to donate to them :) http://www.crystalspace3d.com/tikiwiki/tiki-index.php?page=Project+Donations
-
The greatest reward for me personally is just seeing people happy and optimistic about the project :] It's the best motivation, too.
-
I also see it as an "arena" for trying one's skills, be it coding or graphics or audio. Something that can either be one's own satisfaction or to put on a resume later. =)

75:25 is a ratio, therefore it is exactly like 3:1 in every way, and can not be related to any other number unless said number is added to the ratio (or stated beforehand). :P
I'm sure the spend a good amount of time to themselves...and to worshipping me.

Zorbels breaks out the pom poms "Gooooo planeshift and dev team!" \\o// I love this place
-
make a donating account then :) i've been thinking of donating.
which i definitely don't; i dont want these rich-in-rw people running around with 1337Z0R!!!!11one!shift+1 weapons just because they have the money to spare
I don't think donating would give en in-game award, helping to improove the game will though :](if u get a bugged weapon nd report it)
-
You guys are forgetting that we have no idea how to spend donations to PS itself ;} If you want to pay for someone's rent, by all means donate. But we don't know how to split such things fairly, nor would we know what to do with such money, because it wouldn't help the project itself. We already do as much as we can, so if you really want to help, donate to CS or Fragnetics.
-
upgrade the fragnetics server and put more beasties in the game..
buy 3D models for mundane things like tools, trees, items,
buy textures.. ;)
-
Didn't we already go through this? o.O The PS team uses original art. Nothing will ever be taken from other sources or reused elsewhere. The server doesn't require any upgrading also.
-
Well, the matter of the donation is not "how can it be split", since neither CS splits the money they receive among the developers :-) It is simply money "given" to the project and it can be used for buying equipment or paying for servers and such.
However, at the moment I don't think there is any sort of intentiosn to handle also this thing.
For me, PS is an opportunity to keep up my programming skill and to invest part of the knowledge I have gained working for my thesis and PS already.
It is not always super fun. Sometimes it is really frustrating for several reasons, however, when I get an email with somebody praising the work of PS I am really happy.
My life is not a simple ratio 3:1. Unfortunately, outside work, I have plenty of other hobbies and social life that needs to be done. Let's say that, except in this period for which I am extraordinary busy at work, usually I get at least some hours during the weekend to work consistently on PS.
-
I have a r/l job, a wife, lots of other things. But my r/l job doesn't allow me to build games or even program anymore--I'm a manager now and I basically go to meetings for a living now. :-) Working on PS at night allows me to scratch my itch for gaming without giving up my nice job and allowing me the freedom to build PS how I want. How many games would I have to build in the industry before I got the freedom to build things how I want them done?
Karyuu is right that we have turned down donations before, partly because we don't know what to do with the money without messing up our team dynamic. That being said, we don't hate money. If there was a way to make a million dollars we'd probably take it. lol. A couple hundred makes things worse not better though.

Hmm i know they said they will NEVER make money from planeshift and its only a hbbie..
BUT runescape was also a hobbie and they also said we would never have to pay for it.

Well technically you don't _have_ to pay for it. I believe there's a free version. We're not planning on making a free version and a paid version of PS though, only a free version.
-
You could all save it up and have some sort of meeting on the beaches of Hawai if you get enough money, Lay there in the sun and muse over how PS is crashing and everyone is freaking out since you are not there to tend to its every need. :P
I'd donate for that goal, you guys sure deserve a token of our grattitude.

by that, i meant the money they get, not their lives. they keep 75%, and give PS 25%. some of the 75% is probs for rent and bills and food and social life.

I think the dev team should take that proposal into serious consideration :]

As you see from devs comments, there is not an official position on donations and money. The reason is that we don't feel we need it at the moment. I agree that we could accept donations anyway, just to let people share their appreciation. My point of view is that we should accept donations when PlaneShift is worth some money for the players. This is why we have not done it yet. The current release is improving fast and seems more and more people find it enjoyable. So maybe we can start accepting donations. I will discuss internally and come up with something.
About knowing how to spend the money, surely I have ideas, and mainly will be to advertize better PS.
BUT runescape was also a hobbie and they also said we would never have to pay for it.
Well, the objective is to create a free game for players, but other factors may occur preventing us from running PS in a decent way. In this case we will reevaluate, but the solution can be donations.
Thanks for your appreciation and loyalty to our project. Spread the word of PS.
-
not worth paying for?
It is indeed worth paying for, no day would be complete without ps \o/
Planeshift is in pre-alpha, and is a lot better than runescape, seriously did you see the shield, it's a freaking table 0.o! Imagine how it would be when it's finished and more hear about the real mmorpg with real rp \o/
-
Well, one could always pay someone to work on ps, but I doubt anyone is so addicted. (known as "Adopt a dev")
-
I like that! The "Adopt A Dev" project. All donate!
-
Adopt Me ;-) but donate me time!
-
Great! But how am I going to gather time itself? Sorry, I will need to go to MIT for a while! :P
