Title: Crashing when logging in

Ever since i ran the updater(this morning) the game constantly crashes upon login (either when i press ok at the username/password section or at the char selection screen) or it logs me in, only to make my crash secounds afterwars.i already tried to update again but it claims that my game is up to date. what should i do? Im running Linux SuSE 10.1 with KDE enviorment.

note:im unsure that its a linux only

Can you provide more info about the nature of the crash? Run the game in your console (konsole) and paste the output of that window when you crash.

yesterday i uninstalled SuSE due to stability problem and installed Ubuntu. this morning i installed the game but everytime i try to run the game i crash right after the login (just like in the SuSE system) and in when i run it past the terminal get these messages.

these errors are nearly exactly as the SuSE errors so i presume its NOT something with the OS (unless its a missing lib or something)

I can't see anything wrong in your console output. I assume you have updated the game and also graphics drivers.

I am not aware of any crashes because of a specific location in the game right now, but it might be worth posting your character's name here so that a GM could move it to another location. Maybe it helps.

ok. my char name is Hirroyer Rosunes and the GM can pretty much to whatever he likes with it... since its a new char that only made a couple of steps from the starting position. but after reading the console log, i see alot of error like messages such as

im pretty sure that its the source of the problem (failure to load a texture or something simular=>Crash) because from my long personal experience games like to crash on every failure

well. im logged in and so far no crash... ill keep testing for a while and if something will change ill edit this post

EDIT:

its still crashes only this time i get a couple of minutes till the game crashes again. while before i had merely secounds,ill keep trying but its seems like its will keep crashing

Is it crashing as you're entering a particular map or sector? Or were you still in the DR when it happened?

i havnt existed that area'i was simply walking around it the area you teleported me (the one with rocks and bones all over the place) and in random places it simply crashed.Personally I dout its related to the area since i crash at random places. all the crashes since the teleportation were in the same area,

edit/note:

i have noticed that my crashes are constantly becoming more frequent the more i try to login

well. i have 3 other games which are crashing

1)Battle for Wesnoth- he rarly crashes and I know that its a prob with the software cuz theres other people that crash

2)Warcraft 3 Frozen Thrown- He always gives me a error with something about "couldnt read <Hex code>"

3)World of warcraft- I get alot of error 132 screen (very simular error as the WC3:FT) and simply crash

Note:
I Always had problems playing MMORPG, i played World of warcraft,Anarchy Online,MU online and in all these games i had problems both in Windown and Linux (WoW=>132, AO=>Disconnections(But Rarly),  MU=>Disconnections). I  believe that these probs are from my ISP but i have no proof of it, could it be same thing here?

Just a random idea. Does it get better if you disable sound in the Planeshift setup?

maybe i should check my connectivity to the server (ping the server)? anyone knows the ip?

ok i ran 5 pings to the server and the ms seems reasonable (considering the distance between my computer and the server+the fact my sisters computer is running with heavy download's). heres the results

Im running Ubuntu 5.10 fully updated with the 2.6 Kernel
My video card is Geforce 5200FX  with the recent drivers
My CPU is AMD Athlon 3000+ (3.0Ghz)
I dont recall if my motherboard is Nforce or a Gigabyte board (i remeber upgrading it a year ago but not from what to what)
I got 512MB of DDR RAM

about the years i dont really remeber, i think i upgraded my motherboard+CPU about 1.5 or 2 years ago but i dont remeber well, my card is pretty old, i bought it a couple of months after the 5200FX was released

Your system specs are fine, PS should work without big problems.

Let's check, whether kernel reports anything suspicious. As root run command "dmesg -c". Then start Planeshift. After crash run "dmesg" again. Do above steps several times. Tell us, if anything appears in output. Also try this with different games/applications which are crashing.

I noticed in the begining alot of "Failed..." "Could Load/Find" and "Error" Messages(as well as in the part which is show up). any suggestions on solving these problems? i tried reinstallation already

Hmm... Looks like there is problem with loading sounds (and possibly other resources). I can not reproduce the same errors, after removing directories with sounds and music I get additional messages like "Error while reading file '/planeshift/art/sounds/gui/bttn_ok.wav', so the problem should not be related to non-existing files or wrong file permissions. And maybe those error messages are only missing from Your output ? Just in case - check, if all files in "art" subdirectory are accessible (especially those inside "sounds" and "music" directories) and if they look ok (are they playable in media player ?).

It doesn't look like hardware/kernel problem either (empty output of dmesg), but I can't be entirely sure.

I am running out of ideas. Catch all console output to file like this:

./psclient > output.txt 2>&1

and later look inside, maybe You will notice something more interesting ?

ok, i checked out the music files and i have full access to it(except the zzz.ogg and zzz.wav, I cant open them no matter what (Totem says he lacks a plugin for the .ogg and the wave files does load but doesnt play (it has 0 secound of audio).since I got these access error i though maybe it better if i would reinstall the game, and it still crashed so i did and then i ran the game with your scrip heres the result

First delete your entire art directory.  Next, open updaterconfig.xml and makesure <wholezips>1</wholezips>   has a 1 and not a zero.   Then run the updater from the command line by cd'ing into the ps directory  and running    sh updater --auto

Argh... This is hopeless. There is really nothing wrong in last outputs. Maybe backtrace would help ?

Install gdb (gnu debugger).
Change core file size limit to 500000 kB

ulimit -c 500000

Run PS. After crash You should see "Segmentation fault (core dumped)".
If core files will have size exactly 500000 kB, use higher value for ulimit.

run debugger (core.xxxxx is the name of the file which should be created after crash):

gdb ./psclient core.xxxxx

at gdb prompt ( (gdb) ) enter:

bt <press enter>

You will get the list of last operations before crash.
Do this several times to check, if  application crashes always in the same point. Post backtrace here and let's hope programmers can read something from that (I can not promise they will do this).

can any1 please help me with this prob? its been almost a month already and i really wanna play this game. I've tried everything i could think of already. i tried the windows version under wine, I tried to run the game by the terminal and look for anything special (but i didnt understood anything)

please, can any1 help me with this goddamn problem

2pacalypse: Things look very wrong there.... hmm. Uninstall _everything_ planeshift related that you've tried, and then try out the newest version when it's released. (Will be very soon!) Hopefully that might fix any problems you have, it'll contain a lot of bug fixes.
