I contacted my friend Erik (who is currently an environment artist working on the commercial mmorpg Spellborn - www.tcos.com) and asked him if he'd be willing to judge this 3rd challenge. Because of this, this compo will be a bit different. If you think that's a bad thing, this was all Erik's idea, if you think that's a good thing, then this was all my idea. ;) Anyway, I'm grateful he's offered to judge this, and I hope you guys take this opportunity to learn as much as possible from someone who does this for a living. :)
Challenge 3
Objective: With all the new guilds popping up in PS, many guild halls are being built (or will be, whenever the devs implement that :P ). These halls each need an ornate, yet official looking door at the main entrance of each hall. Use the supplied door model, and create a 512* texture for the guild of your choice (existing or made-up). Textures should be interesting, creative, extremely detailed, and extremely believable. The supplied door link can be found below, along with some highly, highly recommended reading/examples to aid you in your texture. Erik and I are each making a texture for this compo too (just for fun), and Erik has graciously offered to make a tutorial outlining how he is making his. It's not complete yet, but if you want to take your own door texture as far as you can follow the tut, and then post the results, we would be glad to give some feedback (post either in this thread, or in an clearly labeled WIP thread).

Format: The only thing required for entry is a 512* texture using the supplied door and uv map. Editing the model and/or uv map is not permitted (just to keep things fair).
Submitting entries: Entries should be submitted via the thread entitled "Unofficial Fanart Challenge #3: Final Entries" (which I will create closer to the deadline). Please do not post anything but a final entry in this thread.
Deadline: Saturday June 24th, 23:59 forum time
Judges: Erik and to a lesser degree me
Prizes: An all-expense paid trip to the death realm, a sweet badge for your sig, two hugs from Erik, and a strong desire for me to get less witty, more functional prizes.

School's almost over so this means I can do stuff properly!
Unfortunately my monitor just gone whacked and it doesn't show any red. Everything appears greenish/blueish this means... no textures.
*Runs Blender and starts doing stuff*

The rock material isn't quite right yet (or not even close to right, if you ask erik :P ), and I haven't really added any of the designs yet, but they're coming. Hoping to see some others' work soon too. :)

finaly a resaon for me to get photoshop from my brother and learn how to use it..... thiis proablly means im going to put it off for like 10 more years.
oh sorry about never uploading my pic i will do it tomorrow if you are still intersted

For sure I'm still interested. Also, you might look into the gimp if you find that photoshop isn't an option. It's the only other program I would consider using. Better hurry though, this texturing stuff takes a while, especially if you're new to it.

yeah,i use gimp, and it is fine for alot of stuff. just to say i also in the competition. here a render:

edit: another thing, any clan want me to put there name/logo on the front of the door (as long as it sort of goes with the theme of the door) ;)??

I saw this just today and was about to jump right on it when i remembered i don't have any experience in UV mapping, skinning, nor do I even have 3Ds Max on my compy... oh well...

You don't need experience uvmapping, I did it. All you need is photoshop or the gimp, and blender to view the model in.

Bit new with this. I'm on the Gimp, played with layers and all (with the png already provided on the rar file). Do I save it as a png again ? How do I see it/export it to see it on blender ?

Not a single final entry :o ? I thought I'll see a gallery of doors after my return ;) Well, I can't complain, because I did not manage to prepare my door either :-[ ... I had no time, sorry, but maybe someday soon(tm) ?
@TestLab: Yes, save Your texture as png, or high quality jpg. To see final effect in blender:
1. open provided door.blend file.
2. In UV window select Image/open... (see image) (http://img73.imageshack.us/img73/7074/shot16yr.jpg)... and open your texture.
3. In 3d window switch to textured mode... (see image) (http://img77.imageshack.us/img77/1976/shot20vj.jpg) ... and deselect all faces (AKEY)

Two reasons why I did not take part this time:
1) I would have used plugins to texturise, but you wouldn't have liked it. :P
2) I would have wanted to alter the door model, but I have no talent at all using a modeller. :(
And for a cooperation, I miss a partner.
So, maybe for the next topic...
