Title: gfx problem, opengl and x-server problems???
Post by: Peacer on May 30, 2006, 05:37:08 pm
when i start a planeshift app (whether it's updater, client or setup) I get a strange message at the top and i don't know how to solve it... can anyone help me please!!!

indirect rendering may indicate a flawed opengl setup if you run on a local x server

thank you in advance...

What hardware have You (graphics adapter) ?
What drivers for graphics card do you use ?

The message You are getting indicates, that Your hardware or drivers do not support 3d acceleration.

Also do a search for "indirect rendering" in linux forum, maybe You will find something useful, there were similar reports before.

Download driver from Nvidia site. Click here (http://www.nvidia.com/), then click "Download drivers", then "Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris Drivers". Choose your platform (propably Linux IA32),  and follow instructions on next page.

If you are on fedora try the Livna repo ( search on livna and nvidia ) they have a driver that works if it doesnt' give me a message its one simple line that you need to type as root and it works,

I have the exact same card and it works fine for me, but the nvidia site drivers dont strangly enough :P

There have been times where that message was displayed for me despite the fact that opengl direct rendering was enabled, and planeshift even played at normal speeds.  I'm not sure what would cause it to be reported as such but I was basically dubbed insane when I brought it up before.  Can you play the game? I.E. is it playable?  Also go to a termal or konsole and  enter

glxinfo | grep direct

and see if it returns something like this:

brant@Ragnarok:~$ glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes

If it is then don't worry about the driver, it is installed ok.  If it isn't then let us know, we can talk you through getting a driver going fear not!

i did what wired_crawler told me to do, go to nvidia's hp and dl the driver, but there was an exclution for suse users, that we just had to run the updater, so i did once more and bam it worked. The message was gone and the game showed correctly...

Depends.  Are you sure you have direct rendering enabled?  Just doing a sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx doesn't necessarily install the drivers completely.  Also - does the game play at normal speeds? Or is it dog slow?

well, i dont know if i got direct rendering on, all i did is the script you said, nothing more. and as far as i noticed there is no slowness, but the screen is completely black so i cant really see if its slow

First double check and be sure direct rendering is working correctly.   enter this at a command prompt (Applications--->Accessories--->Terminal)

Code: [Select]
glxinfo | grep direct
if you see the respons "directrendering = yes" then the problem isn't your nvidia drivers.  If says no we can work on getting it enabled correctly.

it says
Code: [Select]
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".

p.s.

I downloaded the Nvidia Drivers from the Nvidia site, but i dont know how to exit the X server to install it, when ever i do ALT+CTRL+Backspace he kicks ne to the login screen and when  i do ALT+CTRL+F1, he still claims im running X server

edit
a friend came over and helped me out with the prob. but still 10x for the help Induane ;), unfortunaly im stuck again with the old prob i had with breezy,  see info here (http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=23591.0)

Hrm that old problem again eh?  I'd say that it must be some sort of odd issue with hardware.  I'm having some crashing/freezing issues with mine right now, and I have the same video card as you.  I wonder if the issue has to do with the nvidia 5200 cards?  My crash is different as it never totally crashes the game but we're using the same card on the same OS so... related maybe?

Yours is segfaulting... just a question... what happens if you download and run planeshift in wine?  It used to work for me - try that, and see if you still get crashes.  It might be an interesting expirement.

ok i tried to use the W32 version under wine and it crashed upon login, exactly as the Linux version
