Title: IRC channel
Post by: thesoundless on June 04, 2006, 11:46:10 pm
okay, how do I get into IRC?  I think I downloaded Mirc, but can't connect to the planeshift server.  Can someone give me a step by step of how to do that?

Go into Options in mIRC, and make sure you have Freenode selected as follows:

Once you are in, type /join #planeshift, and you're in :] If you plan on coming back regularly or don't want anyone else using your nickname on IRC, you'll have to register it. You can find more information about it here (http://freenode.net/faq.shtml#userregistration).

There is no need to send me PMs with the same content as you post :} I read every post made here, so I usually get to things quickly.

or...

/server irc.freenode.net
mebe choose a nick here (/nick whatever)
/join #planeshift

you might wanna register the nick too, which is something like /ns register "what the pass will be"
then to id /ns id "pass"

easier if you ask me. also http://www.silverex.org/news/ > mirc.

or chat.freenode.net and it'll pick the closest fastest server

but my advice would be don't do it!! they're all crazy and you'll end up running around foaming at the mouth or is that just me ;)

He was probably killed by our pile of clients.
And chatzilla rulez! Soon they will have chatzilla running inside one of firefox's tabs.

irssi ftw!
altogh it does have a fairly steep learing curve, you can run it on just about anything
i use it, screen, and ssh so my client never goes down

I Just installed Smuxi, and i want to use it because its an x64 program (I might as well stay ahead of the curve...)
anyway i was only able to get into the planeshift channel once... but in sat morning/friday night... i was kicked out.. then i noticed that the web chat client had changed....
I havent been able to use the smuxi since ( I prefer to do it that way so i can run PS in full ,and not have to switch back and forth, provoking crashes.....)

anyone have any idea's?

Hi

What settings do you use (Server, Port) and does the Server give any reply to you?

I believe that's what I use, too.. hmm.. well, maybe try another client to see if it's a client problem or not (and also watch if you get Server messages and if they give you a hint what is wrong)

What was the kick message? was it a channel kick or network kick? I can only see a /part message in my logs, why are you using web chat client if using smuxi? are you using an open proxy to access freenode?

FreeNode got recently threatened with DDoS attacks and had to move services around their servers. Well possible that you lost connection during such an activity.

In general we did not recommend using a fullscreen mode for PlaneShift, but rather running it in windowed mode. It used to be less risky in swapping between applications.

the ddos attacks didn't start til Monday so with my other hat of a freenode staff member I can say it wasn't that that caused the Fri/Sat disconnection.
I did see a Jaccas on freenode last night so am I right to assume this post is now dead?

good guess but no, i was using the webchat client. i have a little prog that lets me make any app the "topmost window with transparency" so i cankeep an eyeon whos msging me ;
(i used to use it at work to hide games..*Ahem*) i didn't know there was a ddos on monday though..
I dont see any log files in the users or the prog folders though, i just dont remember what server msg i got back-
i think it just kept looking for a connection.... ill try again tonight.
