Which program do u use to disign 3d models?
-
The most common applications are 3ds Max and Blender - these are also the only ones that have cal3d exporters for use with Crystal Space.
-
there is a great guide posted to answer all your questions

Maya is VERY good to. I think it's the best one of them and most game developers and some film studios use it to make their 3d models.
The bad thing about Maya and 3ds is that they have a prize. Maya costs 2000USD and 3ds is about 3500USD if I'm right.
Blender is very powerful and it's free and open-source.
Read more above^...I mean Laragorn's post.

Maya doesn't have a cal3d exporter - none that anyone knows about, anyway. Maya and 3ds Max are both used very widely in film and game industries, and often it just comes down to either preference, or cost. It's not the program that ultimately matters, but the user's skill.
Concerning Blender - it's actually a very powerful application. Recently an animated short (http://orange.blender.org/press) was created using Blender entirely, showing its surprising capabilities.

Well, I'm taking it your new. SoI'll try and help.
Like the other guys said, Please visit that link, it will give you some good links to freeware art programs and 3D Modellers.
Anyway, I would suggest downloading both blender and wings 3D. You'll want to try both and moreso, you'll want blenders little things around to help you.
Basically blender is very powerfull and can perform alot of nice little things that wings cant do. however its interface is extremely complex and it is pretty fiddly and has a pretty steep learning curve. myself i use it for the small things that Wings 3D doesnt have, such the the decimator tool (lowers poly count).
Wings is a pretty simple mesh moddeler with a good interface and is very capable of moddeling pretty much whatever you want with skill.
I personnaly use wings to Moddel because its not halfway as fiddly and complicated as blender but if I want some of the tools on blender to use on my models then I can always export the model to blender and touch it up there and then export it back.
Like i said, try them both out, as well as other listed in the thread that those above have posted, and see which one you feel most comfortable with.
Then get cracking.

Maybe i'm wrong but i think in Maya you ca save your model as .obj open it in blender and save as .blend/export to cs. But i have no idea what kind of informations do .obj store, eg it won't save half of what we want :P So maybe its not that good idea afterall ;)

while this thread is still here i was woundering what website is the best to upload pictures that is free. I know of image shack but its gotta be like 1723 k or less and a lot of my pictures are bigger than that

Take a look at this list (http://www.free-webhosts.com/free-image-hosting.php) of image hosts :}

thanks I really need that
oh filexoom is the best!!

Boonet used Maya to create Hydlaa(in AB). Theres no direct exporter, but theres a guide somewhere on the CS page on how to prepare and export modells. So compatibilty shouldnt be a problem.
You should try gmax. Its basicly 3ds max, only with less features and its free. IMO its better than Wings 3D and easyer to learn than Blender.

Gmax.. I consider Blender to be the "good stuff", but the downside is it's interface and learning curve. After all the time I use Blender I still haven't figured out how to use armatures :P But I've heard some people say it was broken in the latest release so it's possible that's the issue. If you really want to 3D model a lot, Blender might be the way to go. Because if you mastered Blender, it'll be smooth sailing from there (so to speak)

hey I have been looking around the forums and it dosn't seem like anyone uses autocad. Do any of you use autocad? It is the only 3d drawing program I have used yet but most of my time on it, which consists of two years of training with my highschool, has been training based projects so I have not had much time to free draw. Still I was wondering if drawing from it could be used in the game? Maybe a program that would change it into the necesary format would help.
-Thanks

From Karyuu:
that have cal3d exporters for use with Crystal Space.
Hello :),
if you can export your drawings into cal3d then you might always try :)
also if you can do that, you can apply to the Dev team too :D
-
Thx for the reply Durwyn. Now all there is left to do is download autocad to my personal computer and see if cal3d works with it. Then I can finally start making some models for u guys!

Caution: As far as I am aware, there is no CAL3D exporter for AutoCad.
However, being an Autodesk product (and in the same family as 3D Studio Max), you should be able to export in formats that Max can read. And by extension, I believe Blender (free) can import certain Autodesk formats..?
What I'm getting at is that you won't find CAL3D tools for AutoCad, but that it shouldn't preclude you from working in that program until you're ready to export. When you get to that point though, be aware that you might need to look up exporter plugins or conversion programs in order to make it to a finished CAL3D file system.

Thanks for the advice Kieve. I do have blender which I am not very good at yet but it's good to know that I can use it to export Cad files to CAL3D. After I have gotten much better at drawing on blender I may consider switching over from AutoCad to it.
