Title: how to become a GM
Post by: restore on June 17, 2006, 09:16:15 am
how would i submit an application towards becoming a GM.

*edit*

i'm asking this because i think that i have the ability to stop any spamming going on in the game and keep things in order.

Take a look at this thread (http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=23067.0), and feel free to post any more specific questions you may have.

Keeping things in order requires having a cool head - but there is a lot more to being a GM than stopping spam.

You know, when I was new to this community there was a saying. "The best way NOT to become a GM is to ask to become a GM."

What if you've THOUGHT about being a [troll] GM *rub chin*

(No Baldur's were, hopefully, injured in this troll.)

Well haven't seen many new GMs who didn't show some innitiative of their own so the saying isn't completely true, but as far as it goes for posting in the forum like this...... ;)

Ask GM Tarel: you have to grown in slowly...

And by the way, you can keep order without being a GM too. Be creative...

In many ways, it is easier to do it without being a GM.

Very true.  Most players listen to reason, and respond to strong leadership.

The real question is "Why would someone become a GM?" If someone has the answer (or a link to it)...

Because... you see... there is...

well you see... if you...

look at it this way...

Yeah, I'm lost, I wanted to at some point, but that was to help the game, I've come to realize there are much more important things that need help in my life.

But...I guess, it's...fun?

There are so many ways to help the game and players.
With a rich roleplaying, socialising, you are helping the lucky people meeting your char. They will spend a nice time with you and enjoy PS, then they will stay and help more to have fun that you will be lucky to meet one day.
Once you know the mechanics of PS you can become an advisor and help newcomers that the GUI would have discouraged to explore further until them are lucky enough to meet your char.
You can help preventing the annoying people to use PS. By reporting them or petitioning against them so a GM will deal with them while you go on your in game life filled with lucky meetings

And one day you might be contacted "would you want to be a GM and be unable to have many lucky meetings since you'll have to deal with the annoying people?"
If you answer is "Yes" then you might become a GM. That's "how to become a GM".

For the chicks, chicks dig GMs :P

Actualy, before Elscha became a GM she wanted me to become one because she was attracted to me, but she was in love with power...  Crazy Elscha

reply to the "The best way NOT to become a GM is to ask to become a GM." quote: this is probably true. people who look for power sometimes are undeserving of it.
reply to the "Why would someone become a GM?" question: some people form a conscious/unconscious drive to controll others due to their own insecurity? Some are willing to make sacrifices to help others? there are probably a lot of reasons, but these are 2 that easily come to mind. I was once a Mod. on a forum, and I can easily say it wasn't for me.

reply to the "The best way NOT to become a GM is to ask to become a GM." quote: this is probably true. people who look for power sometimes are undeserving of it.
IMO, this should be "almost always", not "sometimes".

Being a GM doesn't mean power, it means responsibilities.

Being a GM doesn't mean power, it means responsibilities.

A non-GM wouldn’t know that necessarily. I was describing the hypothetical thought process of someone who was ignorant of the life of a GM (or Moderator)

reply to the "The best way NOT to become a GM is to ask to become a GM." quote: this is probably true. people who look for power sometimes are undeserving of it.
IMO, this should be "almost always", not "sometimes".
I was careful in choosing my words to avoid offending anyone (and possibly creating enemies), but now that the opinion is out in the open, I support it.

been a GM here for a year now...

Not to sure what to say about it. Its kinda dodgey, like with the whole of PS there is a sort of 'political' underflow about. It can get a bit tedious at times... does have its moments though,

Deblin says: well can i have like a store
Neeve says: no
Deblin says: why not
Neeve says: you may sell items to a merchant like hanquist
Neeve says: because there is no 'store' feature
Deblin says: how come hes a mercant
Deblin says: can i be one
Neeve says: Deblin, Harnquist is an NPC
Deblin says: ohh
Deblin says: now u tell me

:d

GMs get bored to  :@#\ death! TRUST me on this one. :-[
You try to be a D&D GM with your little sister as a player, who will whine every time it doesn't go her way (aka: every 5 minutes!), a ten-fold that! X-/

But so do the players, so I guess it works out :P

I don't think GM's have the work load to get bored. Just tired ...

you're remark is fully right.
I don't get bored too, because there is so much work to do.
And i don't have a little sister too.
But at the moment i become bored, then i simple log out of Planeshift
and return to normal life.

Many people seem sometimes to forget, that there is a real life besides Planeshift too.
Those are the people complaining in the forums, that the server is down.
This is the only thing, that is irritating me from time to time, at this moment.

True, true.
But it also irritates other people, Tarel ;)

Hi Folks,

when you becom a GM is it possible to still enjoy the game in the same way as you did before or does it have to totally change the way you play?

Thanks,

Thandar.

I actually consider it to be 'quieter' now than when i first became a GM. I miss Dem too, O.o

Many people start spending a lot less time on their own char.

to quote Venge on the similar type of subject,
Quote
b) You are not supposed to play the game as GM.  You are there to GM.  If you want to play, logout and log back in as your non-GM alt.

Edit: formatting + that post = wtf.

You just can't have your GM char on the same account as your regular character, but beyond that it's just an issue of time. Once you start GMing you have a responsibility to be available as a GM as much as possible, so your regular character often gets less attention.

I am glad this topic came up.  We are in the process of changing our Guild's name and story for precisely this reason.
