Title: PlaneShift is sick ?
Post by: Josellis on June 22, 2006, 07:04:39 am
What is happening to planeshift. It is lagging A LOT, the NPCs cannot be attacked, you cannot mine anything cause "you don't see a good place to dig".

It is getting REALLY annoying

*edit*

lol, it seems that it is going better ...

[EDIT] No it isn't ...

I already warned you about double-posting. Please try to avoid it. --Karyuu

last time this happened it was a DoS attack on the server, maybe it's that again (thx kerol)

Worked perfectly for me all yesterday night. Bit laggy but there were 'LOADS' of people out there. I could count about 10 people talking to the blacksmith at once :D

I have reason to assume it's been a server issue. It didn't feel like a DOS attack to me. A DOS attack would mean constant congestion and likely unreachability issues all the time. However, the lag always came in bursts, with the exact same time in between the bursts. Coordinating a DOS so precisely isn't possible unless you do the flooding from a central location, which would make sure you get caught and the DOS stopped in no time.
Depending on the exact method of the DOS (i.e., not bandwidth depletion but rather confusing the server) that effect might still have resulted, though.
However, after ~2 days of these lag and packet drop issues, the server crashed. When it came back up, the lag was gone, completely reverted to normal. A DOS attack would not stop on a server crash, especially not if the server comes back up after only a few minutes, as Laanx does. Would it have been a DOS, the server would have had to be taken down, fixed and restarted by the PS team. In that case, however, there'd been a note somewhere.

Thus I think it's likely been a result of the superclient acting funny over an extended time, eventually confusing the server, or something like that.
