Title: Update coming.
Post by: Talad on June 26, 2006, 07:52:10 pm
We have prepared a new update for PlaneShift and we need some time to test it on the laanx server. For this reason the server will be down starting from this evening (few hours from now). The test will last few days, during which you will not be able to play PlaneShift.

The update brings some new features, new skins and some new outdoor terrain. You will need a new client to connect, that will be provided in the download section on bittorrent in the next days.

See you soon!

...some new outdoor terrain.
What does that mean exactly?  New things on the terrain, similar to the tall grass/shrubs that was added? Or some new area?

This gives me a few questions:
-About how much time would it take to update? (a few days, like 1,2, a week,..)
-What do I have to do to update? Download the new client or just trough the update client

Ty in advance
Title: Re: Update coming.
Post by: Karyuu on June 26, 2006, 11:18:35 pm
The client will be released as soon as internal testing is done - it could take 2-4 days, but there is really no way of predicting how many bugs we may find and have to fix before releasing.

At first you will have the option of redownloading the new client through BitTorrent - it can take a few hours of the day.

Later, probably in a few days, you will have the option of using your game updater to download the new files.

Nice 1 guys but (I just started playing the game !!!), Dunno if I can get back to my normal life now  :P

Might be a good thing in future versions to put some sort of msg saying 'Server Down' when trying to logon. I always check forum games so that's ok,  but loads of people never check any kind of forums ...

Anyway. Go on, Hurry up :)

PS: Any Help with the Test Managament (AKA: Bossing everybody arround  :-X) let me know. Worked as a Tester as well as a Test Manager ;). Doing Support Management now (not like anybody cares anyway :D)

hmm back in the days of mb, we used to have that. took it off because of server load. but as karyuu said, if things get annoying a message will be posted on the front of the board, and then routinely ignored.

Can we get a rough patch/cange log as it stands now?  Will more things be made craftable by the public?

Will NPCs increase in intellengince from .5 to 50?

Will there be a way to tell where a good place to mine is without asking other players?

IMO all the questions like "what will we get?" or "when will we get?" are completly useless. I doubt that somebody will answer that because of a simple fact: The only ones able to give us an answer to those questions are the developpers and they are quite busy testing the new release.
As for the suppositions to what will be availeble in the next release I would advise you not have them. Why? because optymists will never be pleasantly surprised. What I'm saying that you'll dream about whole cityes, castles, night-bars and such and maby we'll get only an extra tree :P.

New skins was already clarified to mean new character skins.  Armor textures, alt skins, etc.

Tone it down a bit, please.  Of course we'll have a few people starting out hitting the update downtime.  We're allways getting new players, so it's bound to happen.  Please just be patient.  It's worth it.

I agree with the "don't be too optimistic" post. It is like sequels to movies. They get hyped up by the fans, who expect such grandiose things that they get extremely disappointed. Although a new city can't be expected for this update, I eagerly await it (along with the disappointed players who suddenly are forced to learn the pain of regenerating outside Hydlaa). Some new skins would be nice as well (if I'm lucky, male Enkidukai armor will be implemented). If new player customization options are implemented, such as hair colors etc., it would be nice if Brintec began selling dyes again, so veteran players could change their character’s appearance without deleting them.

I've got my torrent client all polished up and I took a plunger to the pipes that lead to the internet.  I wont waste time asking what will be new, will there be X, what about Y?  I'm just excited there will be *something* new!

As a developer myself (non-game related) there are a few simple truths when it comes to releasing a project this large & complex.

You can have it right, or you can have it now, but you can't have it right now.

The devs don't know what features will or wont make it to the next release. Possibly they've added 100 new features, but only 5 will make it through the quality control process.  We'll know shortly after they do anyways, so just keep your torrent app ready, so everyone can get the latest release as soon as possible

You can always use the history.txt file to get an idea. A lot of it won't make sense but you can get an idea of how much work is actually being done.
Has that moved as of late?  I hadn't checked it in months but the last few days I haven't been able to get through.

I am another Mac user so I'll also have to wait longer than everyone else... which will be annoying since, if more of Oja is added Siteri will want to celebrate and she won't be able to on the first day! Hopefully there will be a roleplay topic going on so Mac users can still be semi-part of the world before the new Mac client comes out.

Msrmalik wakes up not knowing where she is and starts to panic, she try's to look around but it's pitch black what makes it worse is she cant even move. Paralysed and in pitch darkness she grows ever fearsome "have the gods punished me did i unknowingly steal some one's kill" she contemplates a bit more then start's to feel some strong vibration's asif the earth is moving she grows even more worried untill she hears a voice "Dont worry my curious Fenki sleep now for you are safe i will protect you, and when you awaken your world would have changed" Msrmalik ask for a more discriptive response as to what awaits her in the near future but is ignored, So with the power of crystal way she begins to slow her breathing and turns of certain body functions then she falls in to a state of hibernation as she patiently awaits the day that has been promised.

Msrmalik says: (OOC sorry it's just i miss role plsy lol)

@ white_slayer:

Rather simple. I would recommend "uTorrent" if you are using Windows. It is a single small EXE and runs as is.

Just download the *.torrent file, and open it into uTorrent (after you set it up a little, e.g. some default directories). Wait until it loaded segment by segment from different people who are trying the same all over the world.

YES, finally someone else who actually understands UTORRENT.

That program is one of the best bit torrent programs out there and is only slightly beaten, once in a while, by bitcomet.

I seriously suggest you Do not get Bit torrent, there are better alternatives.

Bit comet, Azeuras, and Utorrent, are the only ones i'm aware of that can be considered the best.

People more knowledgable than me have said that before and here i say it again.

We really need PS back... lol... I mean the topic shifted over to Making trees so as to get rid of excrement......

When the mods see that, they'll understand how desperate some of us have gotten... lol... maybe that will jolt up the update. :)

I also want to let the mods guess what our next topic will be if they dont' get the update up by tommorow lol.

Don't even ask what the topic will turn into in 2 days.... it's brutal. lol

Actaully I got news for all, I have tryed all torrent clients or pretty much all. Azureus was the easiest and had best DL and UL rates out of all of em. I usually get to 200kb/s DL and UL speed with it.  :P . I guess you could call it my oppinion, but to me its a fact for my PC. Since I did test and get results.

I only use Azureus. The only thing I've got problem with is insufficient seeds or bad torrents.
uTorrent isnt even implented in the package database!

I hope I got enough downl mb left when the update comes out, I seem to have used abuot 80% without knowing  :sweatdrop:

hehe i use to be 100% gentoo userthe amd64 version but because ati drivers are appaling and do more harm than good the only way i could play this game was by installing windows btw gentoo has plenty of bt clients in it's database and gfx cards get 3d accel  in the 32bit version you should try it
and btw tssthorn i can get over 300kb/s but its bt so you can only get what bandwith is available and people with higher upload speeds will always get faster downloads because they should be better seeders

I think the issues with ATI drivers are more or less for any distro, I'm on a gentoo~32 and I switched to nvidia last year.....

However I was an Azureus user until some months ago, then I tried Ktorrent and (maybe cause my download needs are limited
to linux isos and now to the client,I have to admit) I feel happy for this switch (removing lots of java-related packages).
If somebody else is using KDE..... give it a try.

Since no one has even brought up yet, I'll point it out.  How are you all going to RP (if any) the fact that half your known world just switched places on you?  There, that should get this train back on the topicness track.

1 of 2 things..

1.. its always been like this [how its going to be]

2.. something about the gods, or some sort of creating forces blah blah blah.. but probably just act like this is how it always has been

Of course it depends on how much is new..

if new skills are implemented, ill say we made advances in whatever science or art that was implemented

Its hard to RP completely without having to change it when you're in pre-alpha..

You shouldn't RP that the world has change. The world was like that. ALWAYS. Rping that a river just popped in front of you is wrong. You mean that right now you are excluding Kadaikos from your RP just because it isn't "implemented"? Or you say that there is only one level to Yliakum? That is wrong.

I, for one, am eager to explore  :detective: and am certain we can RP around any changes/additions/etc.

One question, though...what uis the recommended procedure to check for update completion? I have been:
   1) Checking this thread
   2) Checking "Show unread posts since last visit"
   3) Checking PlaneShift main page News
   4) Checking PlaneShift Downloads page

Can I do anything else or is there ONE place I can check to be ready WHEN the update is ready?

Well, yes, but still is a bit uncertain the cause that moves all suddendly to start training a new skill
(it was there since always, but why you decided just now to start training it, even being the son of a famous
artisan of that crafting??)

For the river, well, probably some earth moving near the source moved the flow of an already existing river
from a distant and unexplored area...... So you never saw Kadaikos cause a rock drop blocked the road,
or you didn't found the way to the other levels so you don't know much about them.....

(At least the real world would be naturally subject to changes..... Isn't Yliakum supposed to be in that way?)

If we're going to retcon the positioning of the cities, it'd be funny if there was one person who knew the world used to be different but nobody else believed him/her (Kind of like in that one Star Trek episode where history is changed and only Guinan knows it). anyway, the reason im posting is i was wondering if for the first couple of weeks its going to take a really long time to download, cause only a few people will have it on their machines at first, right? so we will have to wait for them to be online, and even then there will be like, i dunno, the entire population of Yliakum trying to download from one poor guy's computer.

i might be way off here, it was just a thought I was having,

It depends on a few things.  If you are lucky enough catch it very early (and I don't know since I have never had that happen) your dl speed will be limited to the upload speed of the initial seeder.  Again, I am assuming we start with a single seeder?  Once a few people have finished it and keep seeding it, it will depend more on your isp speed.  If you have a broadband connection, it will likely go faster.  For me it usually took about 90 mins for preivous versions.  It also depends on the size of the file...not sure how big this one will be compared to the other versions before it.

We're still at major version 0.3 right now (minor .015), so not even 1.0. Beta would probably be.. 0.5+, maybe? It's going to take a few years :)

Ok, thanks for the info and all those that are working on making what looks like a great free MMORPG, I look forward to playing and hopefully helping with any feedback etc.  :P

We have prepared a new update for PlaneShift and we need some time to test it on the laanx server. For this reason the server will be down starting from this evening (few hours from now). The test will last few days, during which you will not be able to play PlaneShift.

have a question wouldnt having a backup server allow for testing(change the port for devlopment (like now))? Thus keeping the current laanax.fragnetics.com server up and running...you could post a message saying server will change in a few days all clients must be upgraded for change..then have a version check in the client tell the end user that there was an upgrade you have to go get it to play. this way theres no down time in the game(as you evan in the alpha testing stages have a massive player base 'Accounts      251,664'.
if its a matter of another server (mysql as you must (as you all have this setup really well) know can duplicate(with a dump of current info) the current db...allowing for a duplicate server (heck with a bit of work it can piggyback the mysql data too on the second server(must have this in place as you have said in the forums you are going to have MORE leafs i assume.)

if its a matter of funds..maybe i can donate either a server (space) or pay for a second one at fragnetics.com(if not too much as this is for development perposes only...

i assume you are testing things like connections and varous other varibles with the new info being added..but to strip the current user base as big as it is from play for a few days..that seams bad to me...i can see a few hours...but with a development server in hand not only can you get farther in development but you can test connections (hub to leaf same time servers ie irc servers connecting for server load) as well as quickly upgrade versions... and have vertualy no down time...(save downloading a new client by a user from time to time when the changes are placed to the main running server)

just my two cents.. i will continue to play and i will continue to help anyway im allowed too as i think this is a great game and i thank you for designing it  ...just trying to point out something you may have overlooked or may not. just as i said my two cents

have a great day cant wait for the added content!!!

That's the funny thing. Laanx IS the test server and we ARE the testers! ;)

You should probably talk with Talad or a dev about that, but if you're willing to actually buy them another server, I don't think they will complain much  ;)
But do understand that the current server is sponsored, so a possible second server would require someone to pay for the hosting costs, too.

You can do that yourself by building your own server from CVS, but it takes a lot of patience and help from #planeshift-build I can tell you

There is also a matter of 'trust' as well.  Not saying that you guys are not trustworthy but on a test server there would have to be significant amount of data that should never be released to the public and could contain things like quest results or combat equations and the like.  Stuff that if it was leaked could set back development.

The second server is a good idea and I'm sure we will figure out something in the future to help reduce the downtime.

I'm sure after some sort of weeding out process (length of time on PS, character witnesses etc) a few players could be picked to help test, in the closed testing sort of way. Keep up the good work!

yes i was talking about a closed testing system...

and yes i willing to donate but would have to look into cost factors...

as for the idea of it all..im sure they will come up with something at one point..but with OVER 1/4 a million players in alpha testing id say it was a hit to say the least...and is worthy of expansion...(case the update right now)...

i relaly enjoy the game alot myself...

just added my two cents...no biggie...just a comment.

Dude, caps are not only considered "yelling" on the forums, they are just plain annoying. As is the question, since the information is all in the thread already:

[...] The test will last few days, [...]

The server will be up again when they are done testing and consider it to be stable or at least safe to use. It's a lot better this way than having a fatal bug which, say, randomly deletes your inventory... ;)

SO PLEASE CHILL AND LOSE THE CAPS ;-)

EDIT: hehe I see you found the caps lock key

Even better, I downloaded it (only 4 hours, so not too bad) and got to play, albeit completely confused and died nearly 20 times, for about 4 hours and then the next morning I wake up and the server is down... alas, like someone just said, Its the price to pay for free... but I would like to add: Pimp. This is by far the best free mmorpg out there. This community is also the best i've come across. Hand on the back to everyone.

I must agree, from what I've gathered, this is quite the game they are creating. The day the final version is done (whenever that may be  ;)) will be a day in video gaming lore for years... it's free, so it's price point is superb, it's screen shots alone are quite stunning, and the sheer idea of people doing this just for the love of it is quite nice to see, usually the mob mentality is destructive.

Just to give some insight about how things normally progress here's the normal steps we go though.

1) Main server is stopped.
2) All componet source code is updated ( cvs/svn )
3) A full rebuild is started of all components
4) Database updated from an upgrade schema ( thank god for that, since database changes are a total pain )
5) A test client is packaged including new artwork/levels/sounds/whatever
6) New data is loaded into database for new items, equipment, quests, etc.
7) We test on the new server to figure out any obvious issues
8 ) An 'official' client is packaged
9) Data is placed in the updater system
10) Server restarted and released to the playing public.

Right now we are at around stage 5/6

Title: Re: Update coming.

Sometimes the steps are not quite in sequence since several of us work on different parts at the same time.  But the server has been rebuilt ok and was running so it's a matter now of making sure the database has any new data that is needed.  We also have an issue with portals ( not real portals, it's an engine portal ) that we are trying to solve before releasing the updated client.

When I say 'obvious' I mean very obvious. Stuff like "OMFG server crashes whenever somebody logs in", that sort of level of testing.  After that we make it public and usually for a few days after that there is a few gigabytes of core dump files because players have found all sorts of new bugs.   So the first week of public release is really our #7.  We also have test case documents that we try to use to make sure stuff that used to work still works.

i am new to this type of posting; i hope i do it well.
i for one downloaded PS client months ago, but only activated it for use 2 weeks ago.
as i recall, it took weeks, not minutes for me to get the download, being unfamiliar with any of the XXtorrent applications.
for various reasons, the download did not work properly and getright was not allowed, so i kept having to re-start from scratch. i am ready this time with utorrent and am willing to give it a go.
mostly, i want to sincerely thank everyone for the new friends i've made, the developers for their active interest in the wants of their players, and the people in the platinum mines for putting up with my singing.  :)

The devs still haven't answered the question of why they didn't leave PS online and leave our server running.

I know they needed it down for the test, and also for adding the updates.

BUT why not use a test server, or create one.

It's not like they CAN'T, there is nothing stopping them.

And if there is I'd like them to name it.

Frankly, it is bad policy to take off a game for extended periods of time.

I'm sure they lost a good 100 new users or something like that.

So please, devs, answer, why you haven't created some sort of test server?

Please don't dodge my question either.

Thanks for your time, looking forward to the update :) :woot:  :D \\o//

BUT why not use a test server, or create one.

This already has been answered, just the answer is a bit complex. Only in this very minute, I can think of these few reasons:

1) There should be only one server, to use not only academic test cases, but real data.

2) There must be a shutdown at least to convert the database - which is closely related to 1)

3) It has been stated over and over: We are testers first, and players second. The "job" of all registered "players" is technology testing.

Thinking further, I would probably find more.

Oh, no, wait sec. On second thought I agree with you. The devs are all evil, EVIL I tell ya.  ;D Lemme get my hands on one

I'm sure they lost a good 100 new users or something like that.

But we haven't lost any good users, because good users understand and have patience :) It's not like the team is losing money from those who haven't the patience to stick around.

Laanx is a test server, and you are the main testers. This is a simple, minor inconvenience that the community is very capable of dealing with, and surviving. If not playing a game for a few days is that devastating, people need to rethink their lives ;D
Title: Re: Update coming.
Post by: DaveG on June 29, 2006, 07:55:34 am
Simply put, Laanx is a test server and we don't really care if it's down for upgrades for a bit.  We don't care that you're whining, and your whining won't make it magically get setup any faster.  Just be patient and go do something else for a few days, please.

People come and go from planeshift all the time, and will continue to do so. As long as there are testers, it doesn't matter. Most of these people if they did leave for the reason, that the dev's shut down the server to the public so that they could test and make sure everything was working before bringing it back up for the public to access ... then they weren't good testers in the first place. They have gone through many updates and client changes and people still come to play. I remember when the NPC's were down for almost three weeks. Guess what, there are still players from that time still here in planeshift. Patience is a wonderful gift. It is a shame not everyone has it ....

I remember the NPC server being down for a while at one point nit sure if it was what your talking about, but I remember it had been down for 3 days or more at one point. I actaully think its kinda fun when it goes down cause it causes more people to go mining aor go to the plaza to have some fun RP.

An update!

I think qualify as an oldbie (hanging around since end AB, early MB) and you know what? You get used to the downtime, you get used to waiting for a new client (especially for a bit more exotic systems, like my AMD64 GNU/Linux), you learn how to laugh roleplayingly at bugs in game.

I won't lie - I do miss people who stopped playing for one reason or another (Ralin, Kada-El, Xenia and Xylonias for example), I also miss some characters of people who are still around (like CadRipper and Havena). But people come and people go, there's nothing you can do about it. But let me tell you - players who really enjoyed PlaneShift usually come back after a bigger update, if there's nothing bigger stopping them from playing ...I'm sure most of those who I miss would be still playing (or again), if it was just an updating thing - most of the people I miss don't have the time to play anymore or another big reason, because of which they would stop playing even if the server was always online and updates went smoothly all the time.

Remember: it's about the quality of the game, the world and the characters ...not about the quantity of the players.

That "you're tester first, player second" thing is something you have to consider, but rather in the way of "if you see a bug, explore it and report it nicely, but still enjoy the game" - as oposed to playing and just bitching about bugs.

edit: spelling typo

It is important, for avoiding further problems after the update, to test as best as possible the server.
You would get even more annoyed if instead of being the server down as it is right now, you would be able to play and the server would crash every 5 seconds or you would get stuck every time you move in a certain location.
There are reasons, of course, for which certain choices are made. Of course, players might get tired, but at the moment PS is not a finished game, fighting for the number of players (even though, the number of players that are active is a source of satisfaction for the people working on it), but it is still in full development!

It takes a lot of time to actually put up another server with all the data. And we would need to have a place where to actually store such server. As far as I could remember, there was a period during which we had one. Now it is not like that anymore and we can't surely try our best on our machines.

I'd like to think the part of that fellow[datruth]'s post [where he suggests 100+ new users got lost] is about, new fresh crisp from the dl users... I was thinking of posing this mention i'm making when the server was first closed to the public, but at the time figured this would be updated sooner than my laziness would ebb...that having been said, let's get back to what i was getting at: New users, who have just dled the client... not trying to moan n whine about it -- but [EDIT: I may be way off base with this question as seen in gondric's below post etc]--WHY? Why are there still links up on the main page to dl the client? If it's about laziness; my hat's off to you...  mean i thought of this days ago & procrastinated this long, so i can respect a healthy degree of sloth... If any of you are wondering "To whom is the hat off??"--it's you. because none of you took down the links or posted a warning like "Downloading this outdated version of the client will waste your hd space, bandwidth, energy and time." and don't go thinking you're unworthy of praise for your inaction just cause you didn't have access--if you were less lazy you'd hack the site. Can't hack?--if you were less lazy you'd learn how... Getting the idea yet? good... so yea; if laziness: Congrats!--if just an oversight; we all miss something sometimes, just something to be aware of..

PS- [heh get it; PS on PS Forums hehe]--
Gondric-- I'm with you, i may be starting a new job monday, hope i get to play before i am reduced to 4 non sleeping hours at home...(oops, now you posted that last bit while i was typing- and now i am a lil confused--i'd understood it was going to be a new full client, not just an update)
Andrek-- I don't think it takes a dev to answer your queries: testing is going like the enegizer bunny; keeps going & going...Anticipated wait time... i'm gonna go ahead & pretend you mean the actual dl time, not when it will be relased-- the answer to that is that it will depend on your own connection, and how many other seeds/peers are on when you download..
Kalila-- If previous updates are anything to go by, it will also be mirrored but when first realeased way easier (for yourself & hosts) if you just use utorrent or a similar torrent client.
Datruth-- I'm sure if you're offering to fund, support & maintain another server we'd all encourage you. Otherwise i think you may want to work on how you show grattitude; here you get to play a game & be involved in its development process for free. The people working on it aren't paid for it [unless they work on it while goofing off at other jobs]. People have suggested splitting the server; but lets face it, if possible, that just means more work for them, and that means a longer wait for updates. And even if it didn't, the server has enough issues without splitting it. Anyway, all that aside (hope nobody other than you minds me being so 'holier than thou', but i think it's gotta be said) you act like a petulent child who is given a privelledge, like his own room, then when forced to spend a few nights sharing with siblings so the father can work on the plumbing, complains that the dad should convert his den to a new temporarty room for this complainer, like the kid's entitled or something.. Should be grateful the higher ups round here are more forgiving than me :ban: ; I'd probably toss the kid in the garage or the shed or the doghouse. The plumbing is for everyone's benefit. Guess it's lucky I don't have kids... or a house... or a viscious dog...  :offtopic: but back to the point-- Boo-Hoo you're put out for a few days; apart from the ones WORKING on it, so is everyone else, but nobody else seemed to act as snide & entitled about it as you. If i was woking on it I'd probably be even more bothered by your post, and if i was in any position to i'd try for some sort of disciplinary action like suspending your account a few days after the update just for the disrespect... Clearly no one in a posion of authority is as unforgiving as me in this case...

BUT why not suspend your account, or ban it.

It's not like they CAN'T, there is nothing stopping them.

And if there is I'd like them to name it.

Frankly, it is bad policy to take flak off an ingrate for any periods of time.

I'm sure they lost a good 100 new users or something like that. so what's one more?

.
.
.
...ok, at this point even reading my preview of this i can't help the overwhelming desire to reply to the post I'm writing just to say "You make good points, very erudite. But do you really need to flame the guy so much?" ... So i'll admit the sentiment was expressed harsher than it needed to be, but the general idea remains: I am unimpressed with your peculiar way of saying "I like this free game a lot!! I wish i could play it right now!! It bothers me that I cannot."

i was reading and i saw somewhere in this thread that updates like these make people quit PS...(i dont know where to find it to quote it lol)

on the contrary, updates like these make people want to play the game even longer because it introduces new ideas, skills, etc that they can play around with. and during the 2-3 days that the server is down everyone gets so anxious that most people stay rather than leave.

Quoting someone:(who)

Umm, I think you may have misread, I could be wrong though.  It's not as much updates like these, it was the update to CB that made many people leave PS.  The community became less of a family and more a bunch of different clubs.  I've just barely stuck around whereas in MB I was here daily.

I find the community ties were much stronger back then, but that is to be expected with a smaller number of people.  Whereas we had Zetsumei and Kixie (Who has improved...and always rocked in my books anyways) and got through it pretty easy, now we have Zanzibar, and though he is a lesser evil than Zetsumei, he has caused more damage community wise.

The MB players loved it for the family feeling, that's why they left...atleast, as far as I can gather.

U oppened firewall ports ? Also, what's your max upload ? I would set the torrent program to max upload of 80% of your real max upload (You can check your max upload here http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp)

That's correct ...OK, some *did* quit because of waiting forever for the Linux or Mac port - but mainly it was in the big migration and char wipe from MB->CB

Hear, hear!!!

I still miss those times every now and a then ...it was that we were just so tighter together :'(

But I think we're still evolving ...right now we're just in the stadium where we just got introduced to guilds, trading, magic, fighting and training. I always look forward to updates - I might not always be 100% happy with what happens when they come out. Very much not so when suddenly there's a vast amount of noobies (which I usually really like, if they're good RP-ers!) who just don't get (yet) what PS is all about and try to play it as a hack'n'slash. Also sometimes I don't like some feature when they come out - but then again, you have to look at it all in the whole picture and remember that the picture's still faaaaaaar from complete. It's pleasant, but still needs some new layers of colour, some parts are still blank and some need some more work on them.

I would even be so bold to say, that I don't see a point in bitching at all until I see the :beta:
Until then I think we just need to support our lovely devs in all the ways we can, report bugs, make suggestions and _constructive_ criticism. ....ok, the same applies for the beta as well (and the later versions) - but the point is that PS is pre-alpha and until it reaches beta there is no telling what all can happen. The devs know it's not perfect, they know it needs improving, but right now they have more work to do on adding features and content. Of course these features need to be implemented as good as possible, but the beta is where the big tweaking will happen    ....or at least, that's how I see it.

P.S. Some may wonder what we had in MB then at all - well, crystals, the world and a _LOT_ of imagination and team play  :sorcerer:

having read all 17 pages, so far, i would like to address the idea of maturity
1)  yes, i realize many of us are only here because we are not actively playing "the game" and are therefore bored.  it is not a valid excuse for posting the same vent over and over.
2)  patience IS a virtue, but many of us, me included, find it in short supply.  accept this as an excercise in it.
3)  the PS team IS creating an imaginitive ideal... a place we can go to forget the RL monsters which are much worse than a tefusang.  that is worth waiting for.
4)  those who have been playing a long time and have maxed out on their statistics tend to forget that us newer people CAN easily get killed by those itty bitty monsters.  some of us, "slash and hackers" only wish to grow strong enough and wealthy enough to do the interesting things without the threat of being killed on the way to Oja, over and over.
5)  happy birthday ahriman (the post was way back there, i hope i spelled the name correctly)
6)  if necessary, i COULD start singing on this post???...and i KNOW that nobody wants that...  :)

This thread should remain open so the dev's can use it as a means of communicating it's revival. We all know posting it right on the main page doesn't work, because of all the "The server is down" whining)

Bimonthly downtime periods, because the server is upgraded one week or two before their client is ready, endear this game a lot to mac users then.

I meant those that don't role play at all - like "yo, d00d! whazzap? you know i bet eye c0u1d frag y00 so bettah in <insert_something_totally_off_topic_here".

I like noobies - ask anyone who knows me in game :D I find little as rewarding then helping a fresh player in PS.

I just dislike players who don't want to role play - newcomers or not. It just happens that usually after a major update there's usually bound to come a vast number of noobies and with them a great number of those kind that don't want to RP.

i have a question that i have not seen yet for those of you "old timers" who have weathered the shifting sands of new client downloads.  when this happens will the characters be "wiped"?  i saw hints that we might not appear where we left off.  does this mean we will all start over? or does the database retain the character stats?
Title: Re: Update coming.
Post by: Ryvis on June 29, 2006, 06:21:46 pm
Liminting the amount of d/l's per day would mean that people would wait until midnight, and then all 2000 would hit at once. then no more for the rest of the day. If thousands of people d/l this, and a couple hundred seed it, we'll ALL be laughing.
Title: Re: Update coming.
Post by: Ahriman on June 29, 2006, 06:23:22 pm
Just an idea...

Anyways...
@Dales: What they mean by "You may not continue from where you left off" is that let's say that you were in Jayoses library at the time, but after the update, you may be in a different place because Jayose's library was moved.
Title: Re: Update coming.
Post by: Mordaan on June 29, 2006, 06:26:51 pm
I have heard of no database wipe.  The devs would have surely warned us of that way ahead of time.
The reason for chars not starting where they left off is only because Ojaveda has been moved around a bit.  So the exact coordinates you were at last might no longer correspond to a place on the map.  So they might shift your location if you were in one of these places or just send you back to your race's spawnpoint.  This is to simply avoid logging back in to find yourself in mid air, plummeting to the great crystal to your death.   So I think your inventory should be safe.   :)

..then again I could be wrong.

Hi, Why don't you put a quick guide in how to speed up your Torrent downloads ? This should benefit everybody. Maybe put it on the same page with the new release ?

Something like:

HowTo SpeedUp my Download (Please read before downloading PS)

Before doing anything, please ensure PS is the only Torrent you are downloading.

1. Ensure you have oppened the required BitTorrent ports in your firewall
2. Find out your Maximun Upload (You can use this speed test http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp)
3. Configure your BitTorrent client to use 80% of your max upload speed so there is no chocking (If your client does not have this option you can use uTorrent, BitTornado, Azureus ...)
4. Sit back, Enjoy the speed and let others enjoy it once you have finished your download (Did you know you can still play the game after downloading the game ?, You still have 20% of your bandwith for PS

Torrent sites?  The tracker used with be on laanx.fragnetics.com.  The .torrent file will be available here (http://www.planeshift.it/download.html).  Just download the .torrent file and open it in any bit torrent client.  utorrent is probably the best.

Bittorrent doesn't need "mirrors", that's the great thing about it.

Question: Are all the clients (Win32, Linux32, Linux64, Mac) coming out at the same time? ...personally I'm concerned about the 64-bit Linux client.

Answer about more info: It's one of the features in PlaneShift's development - until the update comes out there's little news about it  ...if you're REALLY interested what all's coming in, read the SVN changelogs. You grow to like that "feature" as well ;) ...it's like the devs giving you a present and not tell you what it is, until you unpack it - the (positive) surprise and anxious anticipation are part of it all :D
Title: Re: Update coming.
Post by: Myrthe on June 29, 2006, 09:57:13 pm

Right now we are at around stage 5/6

this was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in page 14 ;) but i am guesssing we are past or on step 7 seeing as 1 person has been seen in the server frequesntly and it now has stopped. i assume steps 8 and 9 can be done within a few hours. does this mean that it will be done rather soon(next 12 hours?)
Title: Re: Update coming.
Post by: Karyuu on June 29, 2006, 09:59:04 pm
Testing the server also requires making the fixes for found bugs, and these don't have to be done with a person -on- the sever :) As acraig mentioned a while back, we were/are having an issue with portals that needs to be addressed, and there is some work with the camera that dfryer is trying to tackle. We're not done yet.
Title: Re: Update coming.
Post by: Easton on June 29, 2006, 09:59:27 pm
When I say 'obvious' I mean very obvious. Stuff like "OMFG server crashes whenever somebody logs in", that sort of level of testing.  After that we make it public and usually for a few days after that there is a few gigabytes of core dump files because players have found all sorts of new bugs.   So the first week of public release is really our #7.  We also have test case documents that we try to use to make sure stuff that used to work still works.

If we were on step 7 we'd be in game right now.. or well on our way..

don't stop reading.. reading is good.
Title: Re: Update coming.

Well, I understand that dfryer has made some good progress on the portal/camera issue so I will check that out tonight ( still at work at the moment ).  Aside from that we are taking a bit longer than normal to get things up and running.  But I don't see it being too much longer ( a couple of days ).

On a different note I am a bit glad that people are upset about the server being down.  It means that we must be doing something right if people want to play so bad.  So please bear with us as we get everything back up and working again.   Every patch things get a little better ( even if it does seem worse, it's better just in a different way :) ).

In my 10+ years of Multiuser online games I have seen every angle of players responses during down time.
I normally use this time to enrich my characters background but I am finding contributing to the game itself is more gratifying.

About the 'people will leave because of the down time'. I say let them go. This place drops a gold nugget in thier lap and they drop it becuase its too heavy. Darwin baby, darwin.

New nightvision mod?You must be mistaken some first person shooter.

Although eventually in some distant future PS will also have nightvision for certain races.

I thought about making a thread to address this and posting links to interesting threads people could look at to avoid all of these new posts and old questions from popping up. Then I thought .... to much work. So I will just say it here seeing as this is a hot topic, and it is kind of on and off topic.

Really this is getting ridiculous. There are new threads being created that already exsist. People asking questions that have already been asked a million times over. There is a search button. USE IT! The more time they have to spend  catering to your questions and needs the less time they have to work on the new client release. Have some respect and just be patient.

Read a book, do some chores, use this time to come up with a back ground for your character in planeshift, or brainstorm ideas for roleplay when the client is finally up and running. Basically, just do something as the dev's and the mods are not paid to babysit. Your all (well most of you) are grown adults and should be able to occupy yourself without the aid of the devs and mods.

;D There I feel better, even if this doesn't or does help.

The irony about everyone bitching about multiple posts and threads, it that they TOO become multiple posts / threads, dealing with the same issue.

I love irony

Here is what I wrote:

Here is exactly what Anne wrote:

I'm sorry, but did that seem offensive to ANYONE but anne?

We have a thing called Logic, and logic explained to me that there were things called TEST servers.

My logic then asked, "why don't we have one".

I asked the question.... and here i am getting flamed.....

I'm guessing it might be a funding problem, and i'm also guessing it might be too much work.

I also have read EVERY single page of this thread, since it opened, so someone might conclude that i am VERY dedicated to this game.

YOU can't tell me that when the server went down, the question of why there isn't a test server didn't hit you.

It did.

Some of us, being here longer, understood why.

Others, who are newer to the game, didn't know, and didn't understand they were strapped on money.

I am VERY glad ANNE  is not a Dev nor will ever be, attitudes like that end up destroying communities and hurting the very player base that CREATED them.

I liked this one sentance of Anne's very much:

"but back to the point-- Boo-Hoo you're put out for a few days; apart from the ones WORKING on it, so is everyone else, but nobody else seemed to act as snide & entitled about it as you."

Did i complain, EVEN ONCE, about the servers being down, READ MY POST NOW, was there even one place where i said I CAN'T HANDLE THE SERVERS BEING DOWN, HELP!!

All i said was this:

"BUT why not use a test server, or create one.

It's not like they CAN'T, there is nothing stopping them.

And if there is I'd like them to name it."

Very simple question, and i have yet to get a reply from an actual dev, it was mostly the rest of the community that replied.

It's fine because I think everyone else who replied to my topic gave me the correct answer, money & time being the main reason.

Again, please allow others to voice their opinions, and not make a mountain out of an ant hill.

Everyone that read and understood my post gets a flower.  :flowers:  :D    \\o//

Laanx IS the freakin' test server.

We don't really care that the thing has some scheduled downtime now and then.  It's really not a big deal.  Just deal with it.

Ok, I've had enough of this.  I'm locking this mess.  Stop posting.
