Title: Ubuntu installing
Post by: Raven Poeffie on June 28, 2006, 03:01:14 pm
There is a sticky guide wich shows you how to compile the game, if I read it first I'd tried that out but for me it worked without all that.

Just torrented it, permissions to execute, execute, add your profile to the gamining user group, update, done.
Why not try it like that for the newer players?

Players should use the binaries first.... there's no reason to compile yourself unless you have problems with them. But yes, it is a bit misleading, and not really needed now that there's a program being written by the same person to do the same thing. Will unsticky.

Yes Xordan is correct.  I provided that guide for people who like to muck about compiling, and also because compiling it you learn a little about how the game is put together, and how to compile software if you havn't before.  Its not necessary with the binaries around.  The only reason to compile as Xordan said unless you are having problems with the binary, like doing it for fun, or are the sort that likes to optimize things for your system.  I maintain a version of the same guide at http://vaalnor.mine.nu/cvs.htm and all I'll probabily do is link that in my gooeybuilder thread for those that still want to compile manually.

If I had know I could do that, I'd certainly compile it. Would the update be ready for compilation when it comes out?

You can compile it now if you want.

http://planeshift.cvs.sourceforge.net/*checkout*/planeshift/planeshift/docs/compiling.html

Instructions there. Don't go thinking you'll have much better performance doing it this way though :) The difference is very minimal. And it'll take longer to get working! :D
