To try to keep the Update comming thread a little cleaner, post all torrent related suggestions here.

Any tips for faster downloads
Tips for faster uploads
best client......

I for one use Utorrent, and have never had an issue with it.
There are lots of how to's in there FAQ section.

One big tip is
seed, seed, seed....

After downloading it, keep seeding it.  Leave it on overnight if you can.  The more people we have seeding, particularly those with phat pipes   ;)  (those with high upload speeds), the faster others will be able to download it.

i know im gonna sound like an idiot here but exactly what is seeding?  ???
Title: Re: Torrent download suggestions for the update.
Post by: Karyuu on June 29, 2006, 09:06:55 pm
Seeding is keeping the file available to others, which you can do even after you have it downloaded and finished. By keeping your torrent connection open, you allow others to continue downloading the file from you. That is how torrents work - people share between each other. So the more people there are with completed downloads sharing (seeding), the better it is :)

If i understand it, torrents work by allowing you to d/l different parts of the whole from different sources. Seeding is allowing someone to d/l a part of the file from you. More seeds = faster d/l

Two perfect descriptions.
I ussualy seed three times the size of the file, but with PS, I leave it seeding for weeks :)

it'll be d/l-able from the server (only one seed)

Edit: it'll also be available on mirror sites, but that's alot slower.

There will be one seed from Dev team once it is available then it will grow each time someone finishes downloading.
I imagine it is gonna be slow for the first while as so many leechers will be trying to download from the 1 seed. :(

And for all you leechers out there, STOP STEALING!
If it's give and take, GIVE!

The torrent is first given to the GM team, to begin the seeding. That way when it's posted publically, there should be folks with nearly-completed downloads available to seed.

Download a torrent client for now - familiarize yourself with how it works and the like. When the new PS client is made public, you will be given a link to the torrent, which will be a download of the complete PS client.

ok so lets say i download bittorrent right now, then do i save or keep my current download of planeshift? or does it matter?
Title: Re: Torrent download suggestions for the update.

As a total newbie at Planeshift
But a very seasoned user of Bittorrents I would like to add my weight to what has been advised

It WILL be slow at the beginning
Loads of people trying to leech from few seeds will give very slow download speeds

However as you get more completed Users and AS THEY SHOULD DO they leave their torrent client on to seed things will really speed up
I have downloaded a gigabyte in a couple of hours at best
However if people just grab and then turn their client off that just throws the whole idea of Bittorrenting out the window

The idea is SHARE
Leave your client on until you have at least a 1 to 1 ratio
That is you have seeded the amount of meg you have downloaded
Ideally do as much as you can

Two good clients that are easy to use are - as already mentioned - uTorrent
Another good one is Bit Tornado

So remember SHARE and everything will go well  \\o//

The new download will install over the old, so ultimately there really is no point to keeping the previous version on your machine. If anyone has things like logs, screenshots, or command preferences saved from a previous release (good point Easton), they should back 'em up if they wish to keep them.

Expirment with a few torrents to get it right make sure that you forward your ports and configure your firewalls there are a few guides a utorrent i beleive and if you do need to forward your ports and dont know where to go to access your modem settings go to run and type ipconfig and itll say something like default gateway 243.432.1.435 then you type that into your browser :P it took me awhile to figure that out
EDIT: type the numbers only :P including the decimal points

Well, you will be limited to the upload speed of the single seeder.  At least once you catch up to the 'pack'.  If that initial seeder has a fast connection, things will move along nicely from the start.

now i'm starting to get concerned.
i have a very slow and often unstable dial-up (28800), not broadband.
i went to the posted test page and it never did anything.  after about 15 min, it still said downloading.
am i going to be able to even use the utorrent?

have someone burn the install on a cd then mail it to you. it will probably be faster.  28.8k? and you weren't lagged at all while playing?  Perhaps not, I just imagine it would be slow.  Others would know better.

I feel your pain.
yes you will be able to use the torrent, but it will take a long time.
With all the time you have, you can become an expert by reading all the guides and histories of PS

Have you played the game before?
I am conserned you may have an awfull lot of lag with your slow connection.

How can people still sell 28.8K and call it internet access? That's garbage. Almost all Canadians that have internet are Cable / DSL etc.... you need a better ISP.

Post by: Dales Lierin on June 29, 2006, 10:24:23 pm
yes, i have had a great deal of lag.  but i considered it another exercise in patience...LOL
this is why i had so much trouble downloading the original client.  from the other link "as i recall it took weeks, not minutes to download"
i am also concerned that if i am trying to do this, that i will not be able to share as well as i should using utorrent

Yeah, at those speeds I'm afraid you're not going to be able to contribute much.  If you have the patience, just hang in there.

anywho, so if i download this utorrent thing, and i "seed" that means i have to leave my comp on for awhile right? i have a pretty fast wirelsss connecton so im less concerened about the speed...but i am kinda crazy about things that take awhile to do...

as long as i konw it IS going to work correctly ill be a bit more willing to download it

but uhm..
would i really have to leave it on overnight? augh i dunnos

sorry for the inconvience *hug*

how do you leave your bittoreent on(seeing as thats the one i just d/led)?
Title: Re: Torrent download suggestions for the update.
Post by: Ryvis on June 29, 2006, 10:53:17 pm
don't close it
Title: Re: Torrent download suggestions for the update.
Post by: Easton on June 29, 2006, 10:55:45 pm
After you finish downloading, the bittorrent will stay open and continue seeding as long as it stays open. so after you download, just keep it open for as long as possible. if you need to close it for a moment, go for it, but open back up so you can continue seeding. if you don't, we'll find you!  ;D

That is the ideal concept. leave your system on as long as you can; however if you are concernd with this, you can shut it down and restart the torrent for seeding only.
The main idea as said before is give as much as you get, but you dont have to do it all at once (it works better if you do :) )

It's not the be all and end all to leave it on overnight
It's just that sometimes you can get better speeds from different time zones when other parts of the world are awake
Also if you can leave it on 24 hours a day for a little after downloading you are helping everyone  :flowers:

ok i can dig that...

is there any way to uhm pause the downloading...like if for some reason you are already downloading and then you absolutely need to shut the comp off...do you lose all that you downloaded or does it resume dwnloading

ie i ahte asking so many question but i want to make sure of everythign first  :flowers:

kisses and hugs to all :D

Bittorrent has a pause feature, and it resumes as soon as you turn it back on. i don't know about others though..

be sure to download a torrent program before its released..

@ Kalika
I think the best thing is to pick your client and read the FAQ for it.
They have more detailed and specific answers to your questions, because with each client the answers are a little different.

You have to start the torrent download initially. Once the download begins, you can leave it alone without any further input.

Myrthe: Just d/l the torrent cliet (Utorrent, bit torrent etc), but there is no sense in leaving it on, unless you have other media types you want to share (music, movies etc..) In that case, feel free to share!

As mentioned on the Upgrade Post:

Hi, Why don't you put a quick guide in how to speed up your Torrent downloads ? This should benefit everybody. Maybe put it on the same page with the new release ?

Something like:

HowTo SpeedUp my Download (Please read before downloading PS)

Before doing anything, please ensure PS is the only Torrent you are downloading.

1. Ensure you have oppened the required BitTorrent ports in your firewall
2. Find out your Maximun Upload (You can use this speed test http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp)
3. Configure your BitTorrent client to use 80% of your max upload speed so there is no chocking (If your client does not have this option you can use uTorrent, BitTornado, Azureus ...)
4. Sit back, Enjoy the speed and let others enjoy it once you have finished your download (Did you know you can still play the game after downloading the game ?, You still have 20% of your bandwith for PS

Some things I (partly) missed in the explanations above:

I would be seeding fully, as I have been with the previous client (I think I saw 40Gb uploaded last time I checked), on a system that is always on, unfortunately it crashed and is not running anymore :(.

I think this one has been answered before but seeding simply means leaving it up once the download has been completed.  So as soon as your download is completed, you are a seeder.

I will be seeding from two comps with about 62 -70 kb/s max upload so around 1mb in total
but for people new to bittorrent and are using "windows xp sp2" might need to apply a patch for a file called TCPIP.SYS, that file limits the amount of outgoing connections to 8 where in sp1 it was left unlimited. The patch on lvllord's site increases your limit to 50 and should make your attempts with bittorrent more successful. I dont know if we are allowed to post links to the site here, so search for "lvllord" in your favorite search engine
