Hi,
I was just curious as to how the /report command works. I understand that it logs the text chat of the target for 5 minutes, but does it also notify GMs/Admins about the person at the same time? I have only had cause to use it once, and was pleasantly surprised to see the offender vanish in short order.
-
It would be easier if you made a petition telling a GM what was said. They may ask you to send them logs and a screenshot of the chat box (to make sure the chat wasn't edited) by email, so have those prepared as well.

Erm ..... what does that have to do with his/her post or question? ::| Just curious.

When you start a report, then all chats from and to that person are logged for 5 minuts,
from the moment you started it.
The report generates a log in the system, that the Developers and Game Masters can read.
Whe don't get notified by the system.
We can only see the reports, when we open the reports-page.
Sometimes a players sends a petition, so we will know that a report is started.

We don't take screenshots because they are incredibly easy to edit, and logs can be forged too. /report is meant to log the 5 minutes of the target's chat, and that's all it did. Kind of. There were some problems with its system :) GMs don't get a notification, but we do have a place to check all reports, and it's checked daily. If you have a problem though, it'd be easier to first see if a GM is already online (/who game) and notify him or her to get the problem taken care of quicker.
However, the command will get a makeover to make it work retroactively - meaning that once it is activated, a chatlog of the previous five minutes will be stored along with the next five, to make sure no misbehavior escapes the consequences.

Just saying that the /report command isn't really the best way (in my eyes) of reporting someone. I forget if it records the last 5 minutes or next 5 minutes, but sometimes they may say something that you report too late, so if you send the log and screenshot it'll capture the entire chat, not just what comes after the main...spark of the arguement? Can't think of the right phrase.

The report command in the update:
Last 50 tell, say, shout and auction messages are stored to every character's chat history.
This includes what the character says and also what the character hears. The /report command
writes the chat history of the *reporter* to the log file and then keeps logging for next
5 minutes. The person being reported gets a warning about it.
Isn't this potentially unsafe? You could edit your chat history and then report someone and your edited history would be stored in the log file the GM sees.

Thanks for all the responses. It seems the best way to do things is to /report, then do a petition (however they are done :) ). In this particular incident I did a /report, and the person responded that they had done a petition against me for a number of different made up offences. As they dissapeared from the game shortly after, and the account appeared to have been deleted, I assumed that my /report had notified someone who took action. Either way, it ended up well.

Oh. Well from what Karyuu has posted that information would be inaccurate to give out.
I do believe they have a thread where they were discussing this matter with the recording of the chat, and the issue that it only starts recording moments after you do /report. This was causing some issues and not recording the information that player wanted the GM's to see, but the agreements after. I am not sure what became of that thread. If I find the link I will post it here for you to check out Suno.

logs and screenshots from players are not accepted from players, because they can be edited.
But when you start report, then a system-log is generated.
A sytem log can never be edited by anyone and only the Devs and GM's can read them in the system-webpage.
So the logs are very safe, 100% proof and the only accepted evidence for us.
The only other accepted proof accepted by us, is when a GM or Dev has seen it himself (caught player red handed.).

Or they could have just deleted their character and made a new account to not get caught...

Alright.

It doesn't work as you think, entirely. It's not your text logs that are going to be uploaded and saved - "chat history" is another thing that no individual will be able to modify.
-
I understand, but what about this:
Last 50 tell, say, shout and auction messages are stored to every character's chat history.
the /report command writes the chat history of the *reporter* to the log file
So the latest 50 chat actions of the player are stored on the players pc itself and then sent to the server when /report is used, and can be edited.
The system log you talk about is this one:
and then keeps logging for next 5 minutes.
Or am I completely misunderstanding the system here?
chat history" is another thing that no individual will be able to modify.
Ah, okay, but what is chat history then. Is it your chat, but saved on the server itself? Or is it stored in your RAM, which would still allow it to be modified?
-
I have not heard anything about this yet, Thomphoenix.
The last thing i know is, that it is still under discussion.
The current system was starting logging the 5 minuts from the moment, you
started the report.

Mmm, or that. I do think that thier character name should have passed the game criteria anyhow...

It's in the CVS, third commit from top.
http://planeshift.cvs.sourceforge.net/planeshift/planeshift/docs/history.txt?&view=markup
So the system as I posted it is implemented.
-
Tarel, Bereror has already done work on this. ThomPhoenix, it's all on the server. No one has access to those last 50 messages stored, so there is absolutely no way to modify them.

Thnxs for the information.
The system is updated already then.
I am glad this is implemented after the current release.
After a player is reported, then we can really see the chat previous to the moment,
that report is started.

Thanks, but I nagged Dave about it 3 secs after you did
