Hi!
I play World of Warcraft, but I'm looking to check out some other MMOs.
Planeshift looks pretty cool, specially as I'm on a Mac.
Can anyone give me some pointers for things that would really trip me up? :)

It's FREE!
-
Three things in my opinion (played WoW ones, too)
1) The Community is really great, its fun!
2) The Roleplay is really good! Some nice roleplaying events, cool atmosphere, nice players again.
3) Its free and partly OpenSource
Of course if you are playing WoW you might find the PS-World a little bit small. And it is not a finished game! So there are bugs, there are missing features and so on...
-
Our main goal is to create an imersive gameplay world where everyone stays in-character. No "w00t phat l00t!!!1" talk. ;) RP is highly encouraged.
The new release is in progress, so it's a good time to check us out. (except for the requisite after-release bugs :P )

Was more thinking something along the lines of gameplay/fight subtleties. ;)
*pokes client* downloaded the silly thing last night and I gotta update again today as soon as the mac version comes out. I'm so traumatized.
-
Hard to tell...
Well I think the WoW fight and overall gameplay system is far more advanced. But it is kind of unfair to compare WoW to PS... cause PS is only communitydriven, without any commercial goals in mind.
PS features less abilitys, skills and so on... but do you have some specific questions?
EDIT: changed the word concrete to specific - now thats the word I was looking for so long :-D
-
I guess question #1 is, How do I talk to NPCs? I studied the FAQs and everything I could get my hands on, but I didn't see any mention of the interface.
Question #2 is how long do the mac versions lag behind the PC versions in release? I don't think there's anypoint in madly refreshing a page if it won't update for another few days. ;)

1) is easy answered: very innovative, you talk in sentences! Maybe you played some of these old adventures where you type in what you are doing and what you are saying? Thats the way it is working!
Right at the moment the dialogue system is some kind of hardcoded, not very flexible so sometimes you have to to try severeal times till you guess the right frace. But it is actually a very cool sytsem with much potential.
2) I really do not know :-D
-
So you stand near enough to them and/or target them, and they respond?
-
You walk near them, target them and start talking - talking means typing it in the chatbox (e.g. something like "give me a quest" or "how was your day honey?") and they will answer (e.g. "well, okay here you go!" or "oh really nice darling, since the new client is available").
EDIT: have a lokk here: http://www.planeshift.it/guide/en/guide-npcs.html

nifty! Thanks. :)
I guess I'll just find something else to do for the evening- maybe tomorrow the mac client will be out!
-
Well, well, The mac client it out! ^_^ Psychic? :o

PlaneShift is not for you. go away before everyone hates you.
Nothing personal but if you play world of warcraft the likelyhood is you'll hate this game and the game will hate you.

Acraig plays WoW - and he's one of PlaneShift's chief developers. Don't generalize :)

Yeah, I played WoW too and I love PS...
