We use Crystal Space (http://crystalspace3d.org/) for rendering 2d, 3d, and sound.

*unlock* Are you sure he wasn't talking about the MUD, DaveG...?

I do not know what engine was used for the 2D version of Planeshift, but I do know that the old website for it is hosted somewhere on the mainsite. Try digging around the news archives. I'm pretty sure Talad linked to it somewhere there.

The old engine was AFAIK developed by the PS team and has never been available for public download except in binary form. The old site (italian only) is here (http://www.planeshift.it/oldmudpage/index.html).
