Hello, I'm new to PS and since it looks like a good game I wanted to try it out. The client installer crashes on me though. It makes it about 2/3 of the way through the install (judging by the progress bar) and then freezes. Many files are unzipped and it gets to arena.zip, says that this file is 100% unzipped, and then the install freezes. It kills my PC, even my clock stops advancing. I literally have to pull the plug on my computer because it doesn't even respond to the off button. This has happened exactly this same way twice (inbetween installs I used "GoBack" to restore my drive to prior to the 1st install).
Some details...it's the new Windows client version I downloaded via BitTorrent. I don't have the number handy but it's the newest version just released. I did a md5sum check on it and it was fine. I'm running Windows XP Professional.
Can anyone help me?

Can you post your system specs, just in case?
-
Sure. It's a 1.8 GHz Pentium 4 PC with 256 Megs of RAM, Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2....
*edit*
and oh yea, like 10 Gigs free HD space.
-
And what are the specs about your graphics card?
I would suggest you to get some more RAM as 256MB aren't that much for a system running WinXP. When I upgraded mine to 512MB there was a huuuge speed boost... at least some kind of speedup :lol:

It's a NVIDIA GeForce2 MX card. I don't know how to check how much graphics memory the card has...but I would think that graphics card memory wouldn't come into play DURING the install anyway, right? And I've never had problems running a graphics-intensive game before, so I don't think this is the problem.

True enough. But shouldn't 256MB be sufficient for the install program?
-
Well...
to discard being a memory issue... try running the installer having the OS as light as possible.
Disconnect the internet (unplug, shut down router... whatever your case is)
Shut down any possible software firewall you're running.
Shut down antivirus (PS installer doesn't contain a virus, so don't worry about it)
in other words, try to shut down all applications that may be sucking memory.
I don't know if raising the amount of "virtual memory" would help in your case.
Just try running the installer with only essential things running on the background, and see if it goes past that arena.zip file.

Did you check the Minimum Requirements in the players guide?
I'm not sure if these are necessary for the intsallation.
Minimum Requirements:
* Windows 98, ME, 2000 or XP, Mac OS X 10.2.6, Linux, FreeBSD or Solaris
* GeForce 2 or higher 3D graphics card
* 1 Ghz CPU
* 512 MB RAM
* 1 GB free disk space
* 56k modem Internet connection
The only thing i could imagine is your machine running out of RAM during the installation as the installer is about 220M in size
and this might cause hang up the installer and freezes your machine... :-\

Thanks a bunch guys for the help! And you were right -- it was indeed a memory issue. I closed all nonessential things in the system tray and tried re-installing -- and it worked! That said though, I'm concerned about the game itself running with only 256Mb -- I hadn't realized that 512Mb was the recommendation. Wow, PS must be a demanding application.
And to think that when I bought this machine (XP Pro pre-installed) it only came with 128Mb...and I thought I would be OK with doubling that...lol. Of course, that was when XP was young.
No time to test the game now though, because I must go to work :'( Looking forward to trying it out though :sorcerer: Thanks again!

Not to be mean or anything, but with xp and only 128 meg, practically you're running on virtual memory before the OS even finishes loading. I'd consider looking into at least getting yourself a 512 stick. They are pretty cheep now adays. Good luck with the game.
-
Oh and remember, before playing, you might want to chec out if you have the latest drivers for your graphics card.
http://www.nvidia.com should do it for your graphics card.

Thanks, that's not being mean, just good advice. But, I think you misunderstood a little. I am running with 256Mb. Still not as much as I would like, though.
I was hoping not to spend any more on this machine, as I'll be buying another with Windows Vista on it once that comes out.

Thanks, I'll do that :)
