PlaneShift, not PlanetShift! ;)

We already have so much information available - Player Guide, stickied Important threads, etc. - that there is no way anyone can tell you anything further without you asking more specific questions.

There is one server - Laanx, donated by Fragnetics (http://www.fragnetics.com). You can learn about PlaneShift's world by following the "Setting" link from the main website, and combat has its own section in the Player Guide. As I said, this info is already available :)

Hello.

I know But NOOB sounds like an insult. like advanced ppl accept a new player into their party, and the new player keeps getting killed, Then the advanced player says Noob. it sounds like a insult (at least to me it does).
Just bringing the topic up (i dont want to do what i did when i went into another forums (some kind of clan war started)

well, noob loosely is an insult. but newbie isn't or atleast not as much of one. newbie is kind of like 'turtle' which i've seen used in other contexts. it merely indicates status. those who survive long enough will still be noobs on occastion. but newbie fades with time. ride it out. ps is so worth it.

This is quite complete explanation of this newbie thing, which everyone should read and understand, it is bit more than just one word ;)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newbie

In short, newbie and noob (Or n00b) is not the same thing.

That is the way it has been forever on the net. I do believe it isn't just in games that the term newbie is used. Bringing it up isn't going to change it, but having an open mind and not taking it as an insult would be more constructive then trying to get people to stop using the term. By the way I don't believe newbie is an insult. It is exactly what it term means .... your a newbie. How can you be insulted by that if you truly are a newbie?

I don't think you understand how this game works at all. you won't even find people using that word, or even forming parties randomly to go out and kill things.  ::)

:( Unfortantly Sesmi you are wrong. Some people don't roleplay in planeshift and use the word noob quite frequently. Others who do roleplay use the word noob in OOC (Out of Character) converstation. I can't go a day playing planeshift and not hear noob brought up in one way or another.

@Souls_Lady: I do hope you took no offence to my post but I had to point out the obvious. I understand coming into a game and not knowing the rules and language can be confusing. Planeshift is my first MMORPG, and when I first heard the noob expression I too felt it was insulting. As I played more I realised that it wasn't always meant to be the case. Even if it was I choose to ignore it, as getting offended over it really wasn't worth it for me. I had far better things to do like explore planeshift. Good luck to you and your travels in planeshift.

There's no use getting offended over an internet term. There are much worse things you can be called, so if "n00b" is the worst, be thankful. As long as you try your best, people have no reason to insult you, and if they do they're just ignorant. But don't worry, msot of us are nice. ;)

Here, you're a newbie until proven a n00b.

The term newbie, AFAIK, is used strictly descriptively and is not meant to carry any insult.

Okay, that is good, it jsut seemed as if you were. Make sure you have fun with the game, and like people have already said, everyone here was once a newbie, but aslong as you learn how to play, and you  start having fun, itll drop.

noob is used as an insult by ppl who cant find a better insult ;)

newb is a person new to the game which, as LARAGORN said, gives you an excuse to be an idiot (no offense man, i love bein a newb)

Well I can understand what you mean, as I have played RuneScape for over a year, and I have seen the word noob everywhere, especially when people are angry at others. Back when I was level 80+, a guy wanted to buy my whip (worth about 3 million, very good weapon, hard to come by at a good price), and when I said no, he called me a noob and ran off. He had maybe 10 more levels than me, maybe less.

Then again, I now play Conquer Online, and in there, noob is mainly used to designate low level players, and generally it doesn't have a bad connotation. Actually, I've hardly ever seen it used in a bad way.

And just like everyone else said, newbie and noob are completely different. Newbie is a new player, and it isn't an insult, more of an excuse. Noob, is usually either a low level player, or simply somebody who is annoying (people who follow you around for hours asking the same question, and just can't seem to understand that we don't want to be bugged. Its also for beggars, those who continuously beg for money or items).

It really shouldn't be an insult to you. Also, in this game I have yet to see noob in the chat box.

/me wonders why everyone feels the need to repeat what has already been said.

@ Souls_Lady: I am glad you are not offended and thanks for answering :) Good luck in the game and if you need help and I am in game send me a /tell, I would be more than willing to help.

I have never heard that word in PlaneShift other than this guy who's name was "i am gay" when he starting swearing at me for no reason.
