I have been now suffering from this problem that when I exit planeshift it exits almost normally but then comes dialog box telling (http://www.janiervast.com/kuvat/Planeshift/ps_error.jpg)
It seem to also leave psclient.exe to running and using 100% cpu when I check task manager.
I have fresly installed Planeshift client for Windows and this latest update that came 11.7.
Does anyone else has this issue? At least I could not find any mention from this.
Before patch it did not do this error and I made new installation to make sure that there is nothing else disturbing so it looks like to be related to this new patch, but if others don't have this issue then I may have big problem.
Always needed system specs:
Amd athlon 64 3200+
Ram 1GB
Asus Radeon X800XL display card
Audio is integrated to motherboard
Windows XP SP2 ENG (Keyboard layout and regional settings Finnish decimal separator ',' comma)
Hopefully I managed to get this to anywhere near right section.

I have had this happen before the application of the patch as well. It could be the escaped leftovers of our previous crash-on-exit bug.
-
It was already complained when the first 0.3.015 installer appeared. In the meantime the bug #1872 was closed by DaveG, because it worked for him with latest CrystalSpace libraries.
But because I experienced the same problems, after patching to 0.3.015b, and updating afterwards, I re-opened the bugtracker entry.

Ok, just to clarify: this is with package + patch + updater?
I'm getting that error message sometimes, but no hang in the background. Either it needs something special to trigger it, or it's system specific. If anyone can reproduce this, please post more info.

Exactly.
One time I could already provoke it by starting the client, and immediately pressing the "Quit" button (before even loading one character).
-
I tried opening and quitting as soon as the first screen showed 5 times, and I got the error message twice but no hangs at all.
-
The bug that psclient.exe keeps hanging in the background was fixed, at least for me.
I also get that exact error message, but no hangs. I guess that message is just a new reincarnation of the old "crash on exit" bug.
-
When it hang for the first time, I obviously missed the psclient process, because it used only less than 10 MB. Later, after another unexpected crash, and killing a process with ~700 MB virtual size, the CPU still used 100%, so I looked again and saw another small process from the previous crash. :-[

One more wish please:
I would really enjoy it when I would not have to re-enter all the settings (especially GUI window sizes and positions -- not to mention skin tweaks) when the updater exchanges some CFG files. You know ... there may be important additions to the configs so you better update them as well, disabling their updating in general would not be useful. But maybe you could add a feature some day to only update specific chapters or single entries inside the configs, leaving other unrelated chapters intact.
In the meantime, I will need to keep backups of all configs each time I want to use the updater, and merge them later with such powerful tools like "Beyond Compare".
-
It's unlikely we're going to patch config files rather than updating them with new ones. It's rather rare that they're changed, so it's not really an issue. Just means you'll take an extra minute to reset them.

About the crash-on-exit thing, I get it as well. Everytime I exit it gives me the same message. And now I can't seem to be able to load the game without a crash. I choose my character and click join. I get the loading screen, then it crashes, and doesn't give me a single error message. The only thing that's different from before is that it keeps saying that new updates are ready, or something like that. I'll try using the updater and see if it works.
EDIT: I ran the updater. At the character selection screen I could finally see the leather armor on my Nolthrir, which I couldn't before. Unfortunately, the game keeps crashing, and I'm pretty sure I saw that message again.

I also have this happen sometimes, maybe 1 in 4 or so.
i do nothing different when this happens, so it is hard to narrow it down to anything specific.
I always have the task manager running in the background. just a habbit after getting many freezes in the past. It was the only way to shut down PS without a hard reboot.
It does not use 100% of my cpu only around 30 or so, but it does use a lot of ram 200-700 MB.
I just had another freeze happen, I dont know if it is related in any way. this was not when clossing the client, I was just running accros the plazza.
this is the error i got.

EDIT: system specs

1 gig 450mhz ddr
ATI Radion 9100 Intergrated

DaveG:
Would it help you to report which "application parts and references" are still active?
I am not sure if and what could help you. And the best Task Manager I know so far, Process Explorer from SysInternals, shows lots of categories (open files, mutants ~ 'mutexes', threads ...) but does not have names for all parts (e.g. threads only have numbers, which are probably unique per run).
If you like, you could send me a debug-enabled client so I can return detailed reports to you. But I don't own a C compiler, I can't build one. (And please excuse, but I have to add it again: "-console" is just a useless command for the Windows client, because this console is limited in length, and cannot be redirected to a file in Windows; instead, "-logfile" would have been usefull.)
Furthermore ... I heard rumours (but won't tell names) that the 0.3.015b patch from Talad probably does not contain the same CS version you checked and reported to be fixed.

@Ligh
You can redirect the console output to a file, as it has been stated in another thread of this forums.
Open a MS-DOS command prompt.
Navigate till Planeshift Crystal Blue
Launch the game as it follows: psclient.exe/-console>consolelog.log
This will create a file named consolelog.log in your main PS folder that will contain all the info that console contains.
-
Although it creates even another console? ... That's new to me.
I started the client from the "Far manager", which is a console based application (one of the best Norton Commander clones ever), and it still created a new console - that's why I never expected it to work.
-
Using the sort of "batch" that windows xp carries on by default works equally fine, without need of use any third party application :sorcerer:
Let's see if those reports help to track the issue.
Note: the few times I tested the game in an older computer, it never crashed on exit, nor even without the patch (then again only few times, perhaps a coincidence)
same system running, differences.
Processor: pentium 3 500
Ram 384
Graphics card tnt2
-
Best thing to do is:
psclient -console > out1.txt 2> out2.txt
That'll get everything, both stdio and stderr.
By the way, I tested the patched client and I didn't crash on Bronze Doors exit, so it should have the needed CS fixes.

For me it was happening more frequently with package + patch, then I did run updater as I read it was now possible and I would say that it happens now about half of times. I have noticed now also that sometimes there is no crash message, but psclient.exe is still running after shutting down, however this is quite rare.
I must use those commands mentioned in this thread to get some data logged, maybe is some better information than just saying, uups it did it again :)
