Title: Could someone please make a sound fix mod/patch?
Post by: Tontow on July 15, 2006, 08:01:53 am
I thought that this patch might include a fix for the sound in windows, but the sound is still choppy – (its like as if you where double clicking the pause button every .5 seconds).  It’s very annoying and old really quick, but the game gets boring really quick with out sound so turning it off isn’t really that great of a solution for me.

Could someone compile and post the files that have been modified to fix the windows sound bug? - I read somewhere that the sound was fixed in CVS.
I have windows 98 and no experience with C++ so I lack the ability to do it myself.

It is fixed, and it's just not working for you.  (moving this to the tech help forum)

For the most part, it works quite smoothly now.  If you manage to lag it badly, it can't seem to recover and it produces the effect you're talking about.  Rhad still needs to work on this thing.  That being said, it should be more or less fine now, most of the time.

If you're on Windows 98, then chances are you might just have a slow computer that can barely handle the game.  Please post your system specs, namely your CPU, graphics card, RAM, etc.

@Elvicat, @Tontow

Is any of you experiencing something similar to what is described in here?

you might call it abit similair to that problem tho i hear it right from when i start the game but i can still hear everything not very clearly but still, like the the same sound is playing twice or "crackling"

yes and no.

The sound is fine at the login and carater selection screens, but once in game it starts the choppyness.

The click sound always plays twice for the interface and the rest of the sound has a short repeating .1 pause every .5 seconds.

Since it came a bit small, that's a picture of Windows Task Manager. Oh, and you probably don't have 4 cpus in your system so yours isn't going to look like that picture, but it will be similar.

none of the win 9x had it. you'd have to get a thrid party app to do it. but... microsoft doesn't even support 98. it may be time to look at getting a new os.

actually, it's a screenshot of win 2k.

and Win 98 came with a task manager of sorts.

It should be under your systems tools, under the accessories menu in your start menu.   If its not there, that means it didn't get installed win you installed win 98.  It was an optional program.  To install it, you'll need to go to the add/remove programs program, switch to the windows components tab.  Double click the system tools option from the list.  In the new window that pops up, towards the bottum of the list there will be two programs, system monitor and system resources (or something similar, going off of memory here) . Check both of those to install.  They'll have the same icon in the list, I think it was a line graph or something.  Install those and you'll have your version of task manager.  Granted it doesn't do a lot, but thats win 9x for you.

Try defragmenting, I'm having a hunch that maybe it.... can't find the files quickly enough? Or something.... So the defragmenter stacks the files together and... I don't kno, its worth a try... or try disk cleanup, too.

This might be some interrupt/access thing or something like that. Anyway, if you click start -> run then type dxdiag to box, go to sound tab and take sound acceleration to lower setting does it help? I really don't remember if there was several settings in win98 for this but with some creative sound cards that had helped with similar sound issues.

How is your hard disk activity led, is it lit or blinking a lot or blinking almost none at all?

How about other games, do you have tested them and does sound work ok in those? In win98 there was little trouble with shared resources, so when gfx card and sound card shared resources it did quite weird things, but usually it did with all games using 3d graphics.

Also have you set adaptive distance setting in Planeshift? If not you can try that and report back if it made any change, that would help in diagnostics too.

I have a simalar problem.  My sound crackles slightly, but only once every 5 seconds or so and its faint, so luckly it isn't much of a problem.  Though i would like to point out, my problem also started with version .14

Is there anything using music that you're running on background?

A website, or a music player...
perhaps something interferes with sound system. Just trying to guess.

not that i know anyway and it's only the game that has this type of sound nothing else + the sound mostly clears up eather instantly after joinging the game or maybe 30 minutes later at worst it never clears up

exactly the same problem here.
i doubt its due to poor pc (athlon 2,400, 512 ram drr etc) its something with sound system of the game.

i hope they will solve that problem, i just made my first sound mod for PS (replacing almost entire /battle folder)....
