Title: Reinstalling and extracting
Post by: Thoughtcrime on July 15, 2006, 10:17:56 pm
Today I uninstalled the older PS and reinstalled it. As expected, there were files that were corrupt or whatever and could not be installed, but I just bypassed them all because I figured it would be fixed when I installed the patch. So I got the patch and extracted it into my Planeshift Crystal Blue folder. Then, when I tried to run the updater, I got an error and it crashed. Same thing goes for pssetup and psclient.

So what in BLAZES is going on? :@#\

If you get some files-are-corrupt messages, something is wrong and things should not be expected to work. The patch only fixes certain things, it's not a universal bandaid.

Have you tried reinstalling yet again?

I'm not sure if it said that the files are corrupt or just missing/broken/something like that. I can try reinstalling again but I still don't know if that'll work.

Please don't tell me that after so many months on planeshift it finally decided to flunk out on me :'(

After trying to reinstall again, I finally read the message fully: "Error opening file for writing." No clue what it means.

Ensure that you've no remanent process runing in the background.
If you don't know how to do that through the task manager, the safest way is rebooting system.

That is:

Save your log and screenshot folder, and basically everything you want to mantain from PS to a safe folder.
Reboot system.
Uninstall the game.
Reboot system.
Reinstall the .15 version game, with the .exe
Reboot system
Download the patch, and apply it (decompress it inside PS folder overwriting files when prompted)
Reboot system
Run the updater
Launch the game.

One thing that may cause these kind of problems is antivirus software, you may like to reinstall with antivirus software turned off. Also different antivirus softwares react differently, with some installing works ok, but with others comes all kind of weird errors and it can be different error everytime you try installing.

HP printer drivers are known to be very allergic to f-secure antivirus for example.

If you have an antivirus program that messes with this, you should uninstall it and get a sane one.  (just use AVG or something)

Please check the MD5 on your installer and make sure it's not just corrupted.
The one listed on the download page is:

When I try to uninstall it, not everything gets deleted for some reason. If I try to delete them manually it either says that "Access is denied" or that "it is being used by another person or program". I'll try to restart my computer and erase everything again, but I just want to make sure there's nothing odd or planeshift-threatening about this. XD

The "access denied" crap is Windows being a moron about file usage.  It likes to lock stuff in use or sometimes recently in use, if it's feeling dumb.  Reboot.
