Title: Computer Trouble =/
Post by: Suno_Regin on July 20, 2006, 02:49:58 am
Well, the trouble isn't really with my computer, but the speakers. For the last 3 days now I've noticed my speakers aren't working. I checked the volume and it was turned up, but I heard nothing. I checked the wires and they were plugged in, so that couldn't be it. Does anyone know why I can't hear any sound from them? And yes they're turned on.

My motherboard came with the integrated audio busted...so i know how you feel..

My entire comptuer. Anything I try to do, play a game, watch a video, listen to music, there isn't any sound. I even cleaned all the dust out of the outlets and things, but it still isn't working..just all at once. =/

Speakers don't work, or sound itself doesn't work? Sound exists through headphones? You may need to play around in your BIOS to see if there are any settings preventing it from working. Then again, I had a stupid problem where I just had to buy a soundcard instead of using integrated audio, because nothing worked ever.

I don't use headphones. The sound just doesn't work, I mean the little light on my speakers is on, meaning my speakers are on, but no sound's coming out. I have no idea how to check if something's keeping them from working, any suggestions?

yes...i acutally just bought a sound card from newegg about five minutes ago...lol...i guess you can thank Suno for that one :P

but yeah, your integrated audio probably just busted...so you may just need to get a new sound card, btw..newegg.com...very cheap prices and good quality..

I can't understand why I can't just pay for the computer...seems like everything busts and I pay more money on every little thing. It's annoying. =/

Well thanks for your help.

Still, when I play a game I like music, and you just can't watch a video without listening to it. =/

EDIT: Cheapest I can find is 7 dollars, and I can tell it's a piece of crap if they have one for around 200...ugh.

Well most of the things on my computer have become outdated and broken anyway, so I think I should just get a new one instead of buy every little thing for it...I'd like a new computer anyway.

Once you approach spending the same amount of money on repairs as you did when buying the machine, it's a sign that you should probably look into getting a new system. I'm reaching this limit myself :P And you don't have to go Alienware to find something good - PCClub.com (http://pcclub.com/) can get you a fairly custom-built machine without the threat of bankruptcy, for example.

I feel like I am stating the obvious, but I don't see where anyone has mentioned it yet.  I am going to assume that you have double (and triple) checked the 'Duh! factor' things like the connection from the sound card to the speakers (are you sure the speakers are not plugged into the microphone jack or something?) and making sure that the OS volume control feature is not turned down or muted.  Have you shut everything completely down (and powered off), unplugged the PC's power and speaker's power, plugged them back in and booted back up?

If these are fine, then there are two major possibilities:  speakers have gone bad, or like others have suggested, the sound card (integrated or not) has gone bad.  If you can, try a different set of speakers or headphones (borrow from a friend if you don't have an extra set).  Or, try the speakers on another PC, portable CD player, vintage Walkman from the 80's, etc. - anything that has a standard mini audio plug.  Better yet, do both just to eliminate the slim possibility that you have had a double failure and both have gone out.  (Believe me, it can happen.)  Before buying a sound card and installing it, just to find out that the the problem is the speakers, it is worth trying these simple steps.

And yes, it is possible to get both sound cards and speakers too for around $7 each or up to and exceeding $200.  But, if it was me, I would not spend less than $30.  You should be able to get something of at least semi-decent quality for around that price.

Good luck.

here's my advice

doublecheck cable (look for loose connections)
check your drivers update it (assuming you are using windoze)

If you have mp3 player or something similar, even tv should be fine, you can test your speakers plugging them to some of thoseand test if there is sound, if there is problem is in computer and if there is not speakers are faulty, also it is good to check what Einnol stated.

Also if speakers are ok, try to remember when you last time heard sound, then try to remember when you noticed sound was gone, after that make note everything you did with computer, I have managed to do some things that I had no recall at all, but going back this way I have been able to isolate problem to enough narrow area to be found.

I did work bit over four years in customer support and computer repairing and it was quite uncommon to have fault in audio hardware, however not impossible, anyway best thing to do is to start from most simple thing and then eliminate possibilities one by one until you have found problem, worst thing to do is try this and that and maybe even that one there :)

Well in this case I am assuming its the speakers, I have had this happen 2 times for me. It's rarley ever the sound card, I have used sound cards from years ago to build office computers and they rarley are broken and there around 10 years old. Second, chances are your computer has a inergrated sound card. So in this case your speakers just blew, just plug in some headphones or buy new speakers. I have gotten 30 buck speakers and they work 10 times better then any normal speakers ... even came with a subwoofer.

Well it doesn't matter anymore. I remember someone telling me (when I used ASpeeder on one game to speed hack), that using it really eats up the sound card (at least I think it was the sound card), so instead of spending the trouble paying for every little chip in my computer, I just got a brand new one. Mine was about 4 years old anyway, and I had no idea how to use it back then. The thing was already screwed up from the beginning. Every time I turned it on the tower made this weird sound and the screen froze. Hopefully the new one doesn't get screwed up as bad, but I have experience now.
