Hi, everyone.
This is my first story that I have ever tried to write. :D. I hope you like it. Remember, it's my first story and I don't really have a concrete plot idea yet, so if you have any ideas, PM me and I'll try to use them. Thanks so much for checking the story out. Well, here goes:
Chapter 1
~The Calm Before the Storm~
Tororay Rusos stared out the window. He watched the rain slowly drip down the pane, and stop at the wood edge of the window. He was lost in his thoughts. He did not even notice when the door opened and a dripping wet and irate Kran walked into his tavern.
“Hello, Toro? Are you here?” said the Kran.
Tororay was still lost in his thoughts, not hearing anything around him.
“Toro! Toro! Wake up! Anybody in there?” said the Kran, waving in Tororay’s face.
Tororay slowly woke up, muttering to himself.
“Whaa… Where am I? Where did the camels go?” he mumbled, stretching in his chair.
“Hey Toro! I just dropped in for a beer and some talk,” said the Kran, helping Tororay to his feet. The tall Lemur walked behind the counter, and pulled a bottle of beer and a mug out from the cabinet.
“Well, well, well. If it isn’t Dowaro Kulerer, back from his adventures outside the city. How did the exploration go?” said Tororay, pouring the beer and handing it to the Kran.
“Not too well, I’m afraid. As you know, I was mapping out the plains outside the city. I had a very accurate map and I even found a lost outpost. I was walking near a cliff, when a party of rogues and mercenaries attacked me. I was robbed and my map was stolen. I wandered around until a trading caravan to Ojaveda crossed my path and I tagged along. I came back with a different caravan a few days later. I never made a cent on the trip. My guild thought this was “unacceptable”, and threw me out. They were the best cartography guild around!” said the Kran.
“That’s terrible! So what are you going to do now?” asked Tororay,
“I don’t know,” Dowaro replied, “Only the guilds get hired for any big jobs. There’s no way I could earn a living as a single mapmaker.”
“But you were the best of the best!” interjected Tororay, “You could make better maps than most guild masters that I have ever seen! Surely you would be hired by anyone who knew your reputation.”
“Not true,” Dowaro replied, “Which guild you belong to is everything. It tells your standing as a mapmaker. If you are thrown out, most people think of you as untrustworthy. And anyway, guilds will try very hard to crush any independent merchants, as they compete with prices.”
“ That is so unfair!” said Tororay.
“I know,” replied Dowaro, “but that is how the system works. My cartography skills are useless now.”
“Do you want a job at my tavern?” The words slipped out of Tororay’s mouth before he was able to stop them. He knew that the ever-dreaming Kran who only focused on the big picture would be terrible at anything in a tavern. Dowaro was nice enough normally, but he couldn’t focus on the task at hand long enough to actually do much work.
“Thank you so much. I won’t stay long, though. I need to get a job where my talents are more useful. But yes, I will work for you for a little while.”
“Thanks for accepting. I could use the help now. So much to do.” Tororay knew that he couldn’t refuse his friend. He couldn’t bring down the grin on Dowaro’s face. The Kran had lost everything, and Tororay couldn’t turn him out in the street.
“What time should I show up for work tomorrow, then?”
“8 o’clock will be fine.”
“Thanks so much for the job. I see a little glimmer of hope in my future now.”
“You’re welcome. See you tomorrow.”
Dowaro shut the door behind him, leaving Tororay again to stare out the window.
[Be patient. The action is coming soon to a post near you :).]
