I've chosen a name from history of a famous person who rose up against the Romans, but someone has said this might be against the rules, reading them i might have skirted close to breaking them, can anyone help, i chose it cuz i thought it was good at fitting in with the role play and with what other names were around.

It's nice that you're thinking of a good roleplaying name, but this is Yliakum, not Earth. You can't be that person here, you have to be your own person, and give them their own unique problems and things, not someone else's.
-
If your name is "vague" enough not to be mentioned by every history book in existence, chances are no one is going to hound you about it - but it's still a bad idea. But you didn't mention the actual name, which would help in the discussion :}
-
ok its Vercingetorix - the French Gaul leader
I take on board the above comments (i am totally new to this role play thing - my best friend introduced me to this game and i love it)
I thought i was just a 1st person shooter but having him guide my through the early stages, i am pretty hooked and am taken aback by the friendliness of everyone (having only played online shooters)
Can a name be changed or do you have to start again?
-
You can make a petition in-game, something like /petition I would like to change my name to _____. A Game Master will change your character's name as soon as one is online, and nothing more will be required of you :}
So if you have another name you fancy using, you have that option.

Nobody's going to know who that is. I think you're O.K.

Frankly, an obscure reference like this is better than some of the generic stuff we see. We just don't want blatant references and annoyances. Besides, everything is something.

yeah, One time i saw a guy called "sord445356" or some combination of numbers... he just randomly punches in numbers after sord in each game because he thinks it's a common name and has to put in numbers. I think it's a misspellingg of "sword"
other such names i've seen are "uhaventeredtehmatrix" "spungebob" "sally_gurl" and "bob loblaw"

Don't diss the spongebob.

Are you the 'Barbarian Queen', then?

Ok, obscure outside the history professor class. I don't see it being well known by the average player of this game.

Mind if I just call yeah Verci? I don't like long first names, to much of a hassel to type out.

What is known in US and what is known in Europe is of course different, then there is even what is generally known in each contry.
For example name Lalli is medieval name, it is not english name as is not name of topic starter's character, but for me it is bit unclear if such name is allowed or not?
This is quite widely known legend in Finland, but most likely as unknown in US as legend of topic starter's character name.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lalli
These can of course make some not wished effects in game and I believe such names should not be used because of that. Of course it is quite impossible to know all these things and there is no way GMs or Moderators could know everything, but this might be good guideline for choosing name in instrucitions so new players could be aware of policy. Of course if this is taken to policy.
I believe issue will come up more often in some distant or not so distant future, when there is more players from different countries.

I think we have a limit that we should not cross when it comes to deciding which names are acceptable and which aren't. Being ridiculously picky would ruin a lot of gameplay - for the most part, only the really-well-known-most-of-everyone-in-game-would-understand OOC names are removed. But even there we may have exceptions. A character named Sekhmeth for example would be just fine, as long as she wouldn't act like an Egyptian goddess (the origin of the name). There is no way that we can nor should restrict the usage of many names with real-life references. And as long as roleplay isn't disturbed by a name (compare Lalli to someone named Kingarthur), it is just fine.
