Title: not quite loading
Post by: zog on July 26, 2006, 08:38:43 pm
I have tried logging in a few times, and each time ...my load screen stays up with my menus visible ...tried unsticking ...tried /die ...nothing clears it up

Usually a few re-logs takes care of that. We can try to get a GM to teleport you to another location to see if that'll help :}

(I'm currently unavailable for GMing, but I can poke a few others.)

It's the same for me, same "frozen" screen, since this afternoon: tried several reload, /die, /repaint, /unstick..... with no luck!

Is this happening in a specific sector?

Try deleting the file data/options/camera.xml (somebody please give the full path to the camera.xml file on Windows) and then login again. Camera definitions might become corrupted if the client crashes during map loading.

that file is in your data/options folder ...but it isn't much of a quick fix for me ...deleting that just made my game not load at all

This seems to be my only reply to posts lately!

This is very similar to a problem I had a little while ago.  It may be the camera glitch bug.  If you try changing your camera mode (hit the "m" button) and you get a message pop up saying "unknown" , then that is probably your problem. Even if you don't get that message it may still be the problem, because your screen shots look alot like what I was seeing part of the time, the other part of the time my screen was just black (with the buttons and chat screen still visible), I think I was staring at the DR ceiling!

The fix is here http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=24579.0

OK, I was slow, 2 replies while I was typing

That can't be true because after a fresh install, there is no camera.xml file in the data/options directory. It will be created after the first successful logout. I hope you didn't delete the camera_def.xml file. If yes, then run the updater to restore it.

A bunch of people were just reinstalling on top of their old install.  That won't get rid of the borked file, so it won't help squat.  This is one of the many reasons why we tell people to reinstall clean.

I have uninstalled and deleted the directory (windows) and tried a clean install and now I get a crash after "updating the updater" and can't load the game at all  :(

Have you made sure to install the patch before running the updater?

patch? which patch? I never installed a patch the first time I installed the game.... where do I get it?

I presume you are using Windows, as this is a Windows-only patch - link! (http://hydlaa.com/smf/index.php?topic=24395.0). If you are using another OS, maybe mention the crash number you get when running the client.

WOW  \\o// back to work... ehm play  :D do I need to run the updater or should I never try it with this patch applied?

After the patch, run the updater to get even more of some latest updates :)

One thing, though: make sure that you have no PlaneShift-related processes running in the background when you are trying to patch. If some files are in use, you won't be able to overwrite them with the newer versions. If you have any doubt as to if you still have PS running somehow somewhere, best to be safe and reboot, then apply the patch as the first thing you do.

OK, thanks for the advice... I'll try after next reboot!

Only Windows has the crash dumpper, so there are no numbers for other OSes.

well another (almost) related lil bit ...I seem to have no buttons on my info tab in-game (the attack buttons) ...and the client continues running after I shut it down (750k ...ouch)

neither of these are particularly pressing, but I am curious

Aye, the client will sometimes remain running in your processes, and you'll have to do a manual process-kill to completely get rid of it. It's guaranteed to happen this way if you get a runtime error while exiting the game, I believe.

Concerning the missing buttons: well... run the updater? :}

oddly enough, I HAD buttons just before updating  :P *mumbles something about a silly catbeast*

You can always uninstall, reinstall, patch, and update again :P
