Title: Big Battle Events
Post by: Pegasus on February 05, 2003, 09:33:14 pm
I know that many people are keen on fighting (and a lot of it - like guild wars). So i thought that planeshift could offer certain \'big battel events\' for all players that wouldnt involve pking.

What I mean is that there could be a common enemy (like \'Orks\' - can\'t think of any better name now) that would attack towns or settlements from time to time. At these events players will be able to support the NPCs to save the \'world\' ;) For instance you could walk up to a town guard and he could tell you that the town will be attacked and you can decide to assist the town.

As a reward you could get experience and maybe - what\'s more important - reputation.

These big events could also affect the storyline - so maybe one day allmost all guilds have to work together. Also guilds could be offered certain tasks like diversion or pre-emptive attacks on an enemy strike force.

What do you think of these ideas?

I think this was discussed on a previous post, some liked it some not. I think it would be cool, joining throngs of warriors to defend the defenseless against a blood thirsty horde of creatures emenating from the putrid crevacises of the earth ( Move over, Tolkien). Things might slow down to have that many people fighting in one place at a time.

I got an idea, if you are a big hero is one of these, say it takes a kill count from when the battle begins to when it ends, and the top ?? players get medals to place on their armor or clothing to display courage and valour protecting their home, however how many times you were killed has to effect something, just so some n00b couldnt run around make a kill, die, make a kill, die, etc.

that could be kinda cool, although to support a large scale war, it would probably have to be broken down into a numebr of smaller battles, possibly by having the \"enemy\" attacking on as many fronts as possible...
I like the idea of medals, but perhaps they could go in the player history instead of messing up my stealth suit with bright, shiny medals...(I\'m thinking Nexus TK here)

I like it, the idea of many smaller battles in different places sounds better, that way you still have the war, but not as many people fighting in one area. Ahh, I can\'t wait until 2005(notice! this is a personal prediction).

Smaller battles should do the trick.

When i read Jessyns reply another idea came to my mind:
During such a large war towns or cities could be in need of weapons, armors, wood or food. So players who choose not to be fighters could also take part in this war (and gain honor and experience) for building weapons or bringing in some food.

yes, it would put very high demand on everyone to save the town, and possibly it could be so hard that it would require a plan of attack. 8o

Immagen turning on the game and waking up in an inn to the bloodcurtiling screams of inncoent villagers being slaughtered in the streets and the regal horns sound a call to arms to protect the villagers.....ahh...sound fun :D !

Yeah, I can\'t wait for it  :)) (A massive guild-war wouldn\'t be wrong either)

BTW: I think that players should be able to destroy buildings. So if you attack a guild-town you should be able to loot the villiage, destroy the houses, and set everything on fire.
Wouldn\'t it be cool if two guilds proved who were the strongest by having a full-scale war against each other?
The guilds who were the strongest would then destroy the other clans town until the leader cried for mercy. :))

i dont think the engine can handle the destroying of cities....

I guess a bit of smoke in and around buildings would make people happy already ;)

that along with damage textures is probably possible... though I really know nothing about the engine, the only limitations I know for it are the ones I\'ve set in my head from hearing what I\'ve heard.

I could just imagine it, there could be archers in the towers by the gates, and possible towers all around.
...man thats where parts of the city being destroyed would be cool... \"THEYVE BREACHED THE SOUTH WALL, SEND REINFOCEMENTS!!!\"  and youd see a huge group of warriors *and builders* rush thru the town for that broken wall.  \"We\'ll hold them off, hurry up and close it!\"
 *clang of clashing steel*.

Or maybe some enemies dont even need to break down the walls, they come over, either they fly, or they climb, maybe some could already be in the town disguised... HAVE I GOTTEN CARRIED AWAY YET!?!?!?! *feints from the idea of all the great battles*

Seems like everyone generally agrees. Defending towns would be cool. Breaking the war into small attack groups would make sense anyway, right? I mean, first the archers would attack to take out people from a distance. Once they\'re expelled, then the brute force takes arms to kill any survivors, THEN soldiers on horseback. I think that\'s how it goes. Anyway, I like it.

Oh man, doncha know! I could imagine it as clear as if it were happening....the clash of metal on metal, the roars, the battle cries ringing across the still air of a clear morning....and to be at the head of such an army! Mmm, one could only be so lucky!

Ill be at the head of that battle, and this has inspired me to try my hand at writing a quick story, its my first, so be kind...

As the sun rises on Yliakum I awaken in my new found home, I\'ve lived here for only less then a month, but I grow fond of it and its people, a wide variety...  But enough thinking, I have tasks to do this day, and I set out to become stronger and richer then ever before, but one can\'t become so great on an empty stomach.

Now that I\'ve eaten I think I\'ll set out on my way.  The greetings as I walk through the city seem that they will never get old, for where I come from, people aren\'t the friendliest you will find, and not near as outgoing as the people that inhibit this fine city. Ha, theres Aelyas minions, causing trouble no doubt, oh, and in the arena, that must be link giving another noob a good thrashing, that fellow wont ever leave the unfortunate weak, unknowing ones alone, and Kiern dozing in the shade.  Is that Cyo over there... yes, he must be trying to collect another picture from that girl over there.

Ah yes, now I\'m outside the gates, leaving the happyness, but for something much more exciting.. adventure.  Ill continue heading this way until I find something of interest..wait... what is this sound, thunder.. no..no voices, they are voices, war cries, let me get a better look... NO! ORCS, HUNDREDS OF ORCS, I MUST WARN THE CITY!!!

Everyone on your guards, the city is under attack, Orcs, their main force seems to be heading from the north!!!  Archers, man your towers, Swordsmen get your best armor and weapon and if you have a dragon, I suggest you mount, this day will be one filled with blood.  I hear the clanging of metal already, the battle has begun, I must get out there to lead the forces of Yliakum and protect my new found friends.

These Orcs are nothing to toy with, they seem to be able to handle all the warriors we throw at them, I hope they haven\'t broken through any of the main walls yet... the outcome of that could be disasterous with a force this large.  And I see links skills are not shabby even though he wastes his time with cumbersome noobs all the day long,  and Kada... no doubt she is strong, and rich from the way I hear her Tavern is running, and Aelya with her guild, she is powerfull, but her followers could use some work, where the rest of my friends are I dont know, but I hope they are fairing well.  Its quite odd how all of us even with our differences have gathered here, to fight for one cause, and that cause is our home and each other.

KEEP FIGHTING!!! ...its not much for advice, but its all I can tell them right now, even the best of us are getting worn down, but I\'d have to say the same if I were on the side of the Orcs, their sheere size and brute force weren\'t enough for us, the day has been bloody with many injuries, but the wounded will heal and with our victory found, our spirits will rise, this day and this life have provided more for me then I ever expected.

One day, when we get things around here organized now that we have a threat of war, I\'ll have to truly command one of these great battles, the honor to do so would be more then I could imagine, but I cannot stay here and drift off into my dreams, I must continue home, for the next day, for the next battle.

those I included in my story are the ones I believe have left the largest impression on me,  I would have included more, but some dont have much for a roleplaying name, and I really couldn\'t name everyone I would have liked...

Wow, that was a good start (I promise to look for your books at the local library) :D
FMIDDY, you got the kill-count idea from \"the two towers\" right? ;)  (in which Legolas and Gimbli compete in who have slain most orcs)
Not a bad idea, players could actually compete in a \"saviour of the day\" competition which involves prizes :)
Hehe, I\'m not sure about the organization Fantasyfiend, I\'m pretty sure that there will be a lot of chaos since people rather run into the battle, trying to kill as many orcs as possible rather than trying to organize themselfes  :D

I like the thought nevertheless. Of course there shall be town-battles where half the town is destroyed. Otherwise the house-builders should have nothing to do, right? :]

Hmm Fanomatic i guess that there wont be as much chaos as you think if players want to survive the battle ;) Afterall there should be a penalty for dying during this battle - maybe your kill-count is decreased or something like that.
However if you die maybe you could be revived at a church to get right back into battle (with a time delay of course).

I am already seeing myself standing on a city wall, armed with a bow ... waiting for the enemy to come in shooting range.

Hmm will there be a \'cleaning\' skill - afterall there will be a big mess after such a battle and i wouldnt want to clean that up myself ;)

Well there probably will be chaos in the beginning around the first battles, but I\'m assuming later on that there will be a militia or even a small army formed, where things will become more organized, but seeing as I planned this as the first battle of Yliakum it was very un-organized, which is how I see things going in game.

And my idea was original from my point of view, I\'ve never read TT or any of the LotR series for that matter, though I mean to, I never have time.
Title: Good Idea!

I think there should be a huge arena war day! :D

That would be cool. They could even pit two guilds against each other for team chaos! I like this. Maybe even a battle against the races. Which is better the nimble Lemurs or the powerful clumsy Kran?
