I've seen people wearing it but where does it come from?

Quite a lot. Keep training or find a stronger character in the game and ask.

Are all characters able to wear chainmail as of now? Im a Klyros and I thought i remembered hearing they can only wear light armor. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Klyros can wear medium armour too, they can't wear Heavy armour like plate armour
