Title: NzzRs cave
Post by: NzzR23 on August 10, 2006, 09:27:32 pm
This is what i'm working on at the moment. (with blender and blender2crystal)
The cave consists of roughly 2k faces. You see the entrance to a labyrinth, which you have to pass to access a temple.
At the moment the lab only consists of this first flying rockformation and the goal is to reach the blue crystalthing in the middle. this will be the entrance to the temple.
What do you think?

(sreenshot erased)

and i also need some help with these strange looking edges ...

(http://img388.imageshack.us/img388/3418/shot10gc9.th.jpg) (http://img388.imageshack.us/my.php?image=shot10gc9.jpg)

how to avoid them? simply smaller faces? or is the angle between the faces the point?
also i need some information on lightning ... esspecially the attenuationmodes ... when do i use what kind of attenuation?

so feel free to criticise ...

P.S. i'd really like to contribute to planeshift and i hope this cave will probably someday be implemented - is this really possible?

Woohoo! A modeler!

Posting content publically on the forums is usually a method of kicking yourself, since once something is made public it's not likely to be used.

From what I see though, that's pretty cool. Wish I could see more!

Looks really cool!

I believe have heard Talad say before that he is taking work only from wtb members and not sommunity contributions, so if you have any sort of portfolio try applying and if your accepted as a prospect you'll get some expiremental tasks.

Kep up the good work!

Wow .. looks great!

I really hate the fact that only never seen material has the chance to be implemented.
There are a number of great models around that have been published here and i would love to see some of 'em in PS.
Take a look at the "Klyros City Project": It's very promising and some of the artists seem to have great skills. What a pitty their work is just "training" :(

Greetings!

Thats exactly the fact!
The ship model for example in the KCP is amazing ... and in my opinion could easily be implemented in planeshift.
the same for my cave. its really frustrating, that all that work only has two ways to get attention.
Show it in the forum to get some feedback - but never seen in ps -, or waiting month over month as a prospect only to get "experimental tasks" waiting for them to be reviewed and so on and so on ...
of course there should be some kind of qualitycheck, but not for that price ....
i'm unsure what to do now ... really wait till anything happens - or show my work to the community knowing, that talads plans are so fix, that this cave has no place in ps...

Ask around in the Klyro's City Project. Go to the main thread and ask your questions. The Project already has a couple of able 3D Modellers, especially Rast and Minetus(Minetus does the terrain modelling)I'm sure that you can find at least one little helper.

@NzzR23
looks nice :).glad you like my boat ;). To help with those edges, changing the lighting around a bit might help (maybe try a different type of light source), though i'm entirely sure what the crystal space engine suports. U may have to subdivide/smooth the faces a bit aswell. You're probably better off asking minetus or 1 of the others about stuff like this though.
(also what program/s are you using?)

@Gyerfry
about wings.... start by right clicking and making a cube. select some faces and extrude them. play around from there. there are also some tuorials on the wings site (i think - otherwise try googling "wings 3d tutorials")

Hi,

Looks pretty sweet from what I can see from the screenshot.

The lights work ok with the default attenuation mode. You can read more about the light attenuation modes in http://www.crystalspace3d.org/docs/online/api/group__engine3d__light.php.

You can use smoothing groups for objects you want to appear smooth. In Blender, toggle "autosmooth" on for those objects and export normally. Alternatively, the latest blender2crystal overlay gui has smooth setting in the render section.

I hope to see more of your work.

Rast, how do you paint your moddel in wings?

@ Gyerfry
depends what you meen.....
if u want to texture it u have to use blender
if u want to colour individual faces you can select the faces in wings and change the material and create a new 1 (i think)

if u want to get the rendered effect but still have the lines showing (like in the pictures of my ship) press "w" to get wire frame mode then click on the button in the top left hand corner (can't remember the name of it - i think it part renders it in opengl - some 1 correct me if i'm wrong)

hope that helped :)

Nice model, looks like you're having some problems with the lighting though... never used blender before though, so I'm not sure what to do about it.

@Gyerfry: uv map it and texture it in Photoshop, or another image editing program.  I'd really recomend getting photoshop (You can get older versions pretty cheap on ebay)  but if you're really strapped for cash you can get a copy of gimp.
