Title: guns in ps
Post by: Peacer on August 24, 2006, 12:25:11 pm
i was talking a bit with arireare when he stumbled across something... guns were used in the middleages...

1249

    * Rodger Bacon invented his gunpowder formula.

Circa 1250

    * Gun invented in China.

Although... i don't know what the exact number the year planeshift is in although i think it's around the thousands and twenty five or something... even though it were the 1400's i don't think a gun should be implented, as it doesn't have to appeal completely to the real world medieval  time... as i've posted before... a man would have more than one wife back then, in here they have one.

pro's n con's on a bow vs gun in midle ages:

bow: range (around 100-200m? depending on bow/arrow type)
-cheap
-less range then a gun
-near silent
-similar damage of a gun
-hardly pierce heavy armor
-fast recharge
-can have several types of addins in arrows (poison flasks, explosive etc)

gun: range (lets say 300m? may vary on diferent weapon types (handgun/shotgun types))
-expensive
-more range then a bow
-very loudy
-similar dmg of a bow
-can pierce heavy armor more easily
-slow recharge
-can have poison bullets? (unlikely but..)

pretty much what i could tink of, as you can see using a gun over a bow woulnd bring that much of a advantage besides longer range and armor piercing

also the introduction of guns(powder) would bring other weapons like cannons, hand cannons(this ones would have explosive hits, but would be eaven slower to reload also do litle more damage then bows with explosive arrows)

I though PS was supposed to take place in a barely past bronze age type era.  Gunpowder was used in the late middle ages sure, but very late as you said.  I doubt PS would have these, even muskets...

hmm well first of I'm against guns in PS.

I believe the devs have also mentioned a few times already there will be no guns in PS.

As for the poro's and con's I think they don't really hold in account how this muskets would work.

Why muskets weren't used was simple. very low acuracy so practicly impossible to hit someone who wasn't standing practily next to you. Very long reload time. Also these muskets had fuses and not a trigger so a large setback was you wouldn't know when exactly he would go of. The large benefit ofcourse was that a musket was easier to learn to use.

Guns in the middle ages were mainly experimental and had a tendency to jam, blow up, be really inaccurate and required someone to create and mix the gunpowder and someone to find a good source of something to use as ammo. I am actually really against guns in PS, but Peacer poses an interesting topic. So, we would need a flint mine and a source of saltpeter at least. A flint mine might be good if there are eventually campfires in PS, BTW. Also, the earliest cannons in the middle ages were usually made for only one purpose, that being blowing holes in castles. Anything more accurate than than or the shrapnel burst blow at a group of opponents was pretty much out of the question. It took a while to get to the arquebus and blunderbluss flintlock type of guns and I think that by the time those were in use, we would be way out of the time period for PS. But nobody said anything about seige engines... of course we would have to have castles. And, until people actually HAVE to eat, a seige would not really be compelling to the players...

Why must this be brought up again and again? (http://img82.imageshack.us/img82/5710/pleasedwq9.gif) Way too many discussions about this subject - it's become as old as "Why no dragons?" Search the Wishlist on this issue (along with castles and seiges) and you'll stumble onto a pot of gold.

As always, if there are disagreements please PM me.
