Title: Zorbels Art
Post by: zorbels on September 16, 2006, 03:49:51 am
First of all this art has nothing to do with planeshift unfortantly. Though if I had the time I would be drawing up a storm of fan art for PS.

This picture I drew, I have posted because I just can't contain my excitment and must tell the world  \\o// ... I AM GOING TO SEE MARIAH CAREY!!!! She has never come to Canada and I have been a fan of her music since I was ten. Basically the start of her career. I drew this picture from the cover of the Rolling Stone, and I drew it about ...(omg I feel old :( ) ten years ago. I added the tattoo on her arm and changed some features abit on her face including eye color. I hope you like, and if it is allowed I can post more of my art, but as I said before it isn't planeshift related.

Is that ok mods? Community? Anyway .... enjoy.  Now I am going to run down my back alley and tell my whole neighborhood at the top of my lungs. Heh .... like they haven't had enough with that song that karyuu posted that I LOVE so much and played over and over ......... The Bestest Song EVAR! (http://dojo.fi/~rancid/loituma__.swf)

[Edit] I found the rolling Stones Cover

Eeee! Very cool, Zorbels :D Whenever you make PlaneShift-related artsy goodness, definitely make a thread in the Fanart section. For general art though, Hydlaa Plaza is the best section. And I'd love to see more, whatever it is!

Very nice, but just 2 things I feel like picking out that I think stand out.

1. Too skinny

2. Her cheeks are kinda puffy.

But yeah, it's really good. I can still only draw stick figures ><

Thanks for moving the thread Karyuu. I appreciate it and I am glad you like!

@Suno: Thanks for the constructive criticism. You points have been noted, though bear in mind that I drew this at a young age and my art has since matured. Hey wait a minute! I thought Mariah was skinny with puffy cheeks ..... heh ....

@LARAGORN: Oh believe me I will have the time of my life. I am going to try and get her to sign stroniths bald head.  :woot: If I get her to do it I will take a picture and post it.

@Stronith:  :'( OMG, is all I have to say! Can we skip that part of the concert? He looks crazed.

I drew Marvin The Martian for a friend who liked him, and wanted a picture of him on her binder for school.

This drawing was just recent. It took me a whole of five minutes. I hadn't picked up a pencil in awhile and feared my drawing skills might have suffered because of it. I was pleased that my skills were still kicking around.

:D Thank you all for your comments. For anyone who is interested I had a blast at the Mariah Carey concert. I would highly recommend if you get a chance to go see her live. She puts on a hell of a show. It took me two days to recover my voice from screaming my head off, but it was well worth it.

Anyhow, here is another one of my drawings. My daughter named it The Mermicorn. I have still quite abit to do on it for shading and details. I am abit of a perfectionist and was wondering if anyone could give me advice on how to make the scales of this mermicorn look more realistic or just look like the scales belong. I just can't seem to grasp the skill and I have never really drawn anything that had scales before. Advice would be much appreciated.

Title: Re: Zorbels Art
Post by: Moogie on September 25, 2006, 02:51:01 am
I have a lil' tip for the scales. :) Imagine you've got a sheet of scales, all the same width all the way across the sheet. Now mentally wrap that sheet around a cylinder. The curves at the top and bottom, from your viewpoint, will make that sheet roll over and look gradually flatter as they roll over the top and bottom edges and onto the other side (which you can't see). And as it goes flat like that, those scales appear to look thinner and thinner untill you don't see any more because obviously they start wrapping down the other side of the shape. Hope that's not too confusing. :)

But anyways. Basically wherever there is a curved edge, the scales get thinner and a bit smaller than the ones nearest your view (in this case, the scales nearest your view are the ones in the middle).

I can quickly sketch something up if you need a visual aid, or there's probably a good example somewhere on Google. I'll take a look and post it back if I can find it.

That picture is -awesome-, by the way. ;)

Edit: Phew, okay, I got it right this time. xD This image should be less confusing than the explanation above.

Note you can also see the black (heavy shadow) areas underneath scales that are flowing back towards you due to perspective.
Title: Re: Zorbels Art
Post by: zorbels on September 25, 2006, 03:06:22 am
No it isn't confusing at all and THANK you!  \\o// That actually makes sense and now I feel I can move this picture forward instead of to the garbage. Hurray! By the way, nice to meet you and I much appreciate your advice as I have heard you are quite the artist. If you can post a visual that would be lovely, if not I can work with your words and give it a try. I will post the resault here when I am finished the drawing.

Moogie never gives up! Here is the original image: http://graphics.stanford.edu/courses/cs348b-competition/cs348b-05/snake/data/scales_02.jpg

If you can view that, basically every edge to the shape is an example of how the scales are wrapping around and getting thinner due to perspective.

Edit:  Oh yes, forgot .... Peacer, yes you are right. The horn is all wrong. I am still currently working on the shading and details as I said in my last post.  ;) One of the fix it projects is the horn, but .... good eye!

Thanks everyone for your comments.  :D

Any suggestions are appreciated, I would  like to better my drawing skills and found that the planeshift community had the most wonderful artists, so I figured I would hit them up for advice. I liked in some of the Fan art threads how the PS art community would help others in their threads and it was all good sound advice. I was hoping for this as well. Not many have responded and I am not sure if that is a good or bad thing? Maybe it's just because it isn't Planeshift art? Meh ... no matter here is another of my colored pic's .....

Feh, I get long delays before someone answer meh :P

And I don't think i'm qualified to answer yet, I don't have any tutorials to give and i'm rather lousy at giving critics, but my arrogance fights me so I guess i'll have to give it a try :D

Your style's very cartoonish, not very detailed, maybe if you worked more on the textures and adding goodies. Your drawing skills seem to be fine, clean lineart.

That's all I can think of, good job :)

Hi,

You draw very well zorbels. I especially like how you've used colour pencils in the bulldog picture. The lion, ostrich and horse are nice too. I like the horse most of them, as it's of more complex perspective. Hmm, have you drawn these from a source, or from your head?

Both the line darkness and width count. In some cases it may be good to slightly erase the lines where the light hits the most. Eg. in the horse picture, the shape lines are pretty heavy. Remember that you don't have to encircle the shape with a line, instead some spots can be left open.

Title: Re: Zorbels Art
Post by: Peacer on October 13, 2006, 10:40:51 am
the horse's cheeks could'ave been a little smaller i guess, else... it's quite cool

I don't really have any other comments for the other piccies other that i like the lions hair xD, could you draw some long on me ::)?
Title: Re: Zorbels Art
Post by: Croconil on October 13, 2006, 12:22:12 pm
Yeah, thats the only thing with it, the cheeks are a little large. Looks a bit like the horse is holding his breath  :P

Otherwise, as good as ever Zorbels!
Title: Re: Zorbels Art
Post by: zorbels on October 13, 2006, 06:54:59 pm
@Cherppow: Thanks for your imput. :) I never noticed the cheeks on the horse sketch till you said something, and now that I am looking at it you are right. Cheeks are to big. I think Croconil is right, it looks like the horse is holding it's breath. I have the biggest urge to redraw the horse and have it blowing a bubble with bubble gum. I noticed when it comes to drawing I do have issues as to where to put the shadows and where to have dark lines vs lighter lines. I am working on this issue by trying to draw real life objects by the kitchen window. I get alot of sunshine through that window so it casts shadows around the backside of the object, creating the perfect tool to help me work on it.

The Lion, Ostrich, Horse, Mermicorn, Gruffen, and Tiger are from my head. The rest of the art is inspired by other artists. I am not sure what you would classify the Mariah carey drawing. I guess that is my art with someone else's idea? I enjoy taking art already done and recreating it with my own little twist. I do this usually when I am in the mood to draw but can't think of an idea.

This is the first dragon I drew ever. It was inspired from an original picture in a D&D book. I loved it so much I wanted to see if I could draw it. Hope you like.

O.o I regret not having checked this before now. Wow. Taaaaaalent. :>

(Wanting to come up with something atleast to be considered constructive criticism, I looked the picture over a few times.. I can't really see anything wrong, besides the left(his left) talon. Just looks a little odd. And the far ear. But that might just be because I ate it. )

Really? Thanks Xeraans. Heh .... ya I guess the left does look a little *Zorbels searches for the word* erm .... deformed?  :P Ya that sounds right, it looks deformed. Personally I hate the tail. I couldn't get it 3Dish and I think it looks way to flat. I just don't know how to make it look right.

I looked at the left-side of the tail, and the shading made it look just fine, to me. But went back and checked the right side, and it just seems the placement of the..spines..spiny..things are off. :) Also, I retract my statement about the ear, I see now that it is also a spiny..thing. While I don't know much about dragon/reptile anatomy - or any anatomy at all, really - I assume that the spines are supposed to be right over the actual spine of the dragon? And in that case, since the tail is an extrension of the spine, it just curves over too soon.

Whenthe tail comes into sight from around the rock, they shouldn't be on the top or front yet, but on the back-side fo the tail, then as it comes around to the front of the rock, the spines would be clearly visable. Being how big the.. spiny things are, they probably would be slightly visable just above the tail, when it comes around?

Err, if you can make sense of any of that. Maybe this'll explain what I'm talking about more?

Though, I'd wait until an actual artist got here first. XD
Still, lovely art! I can't believe I missed this thread for so long.
