It could be. Software steers the fan, now imagine if some malicious virus got to the motherboard's, or the Hard drive's. Imagine the heat?

Though it's not much of a threat, I have yet to see someone blowing up because of a code malfunction in the system.

Maybe not codes, but they could've planted some explosive thingy in your computer, and when you press a key it goes boom. =P

Quote
The Mentor January 8 1986 taken from "The Hacker's manifesto"

This is our world now... the world of the electron and the switch, the beauty of the baud. We make use of a service already existing without paying for what could be dirt-cheap if it wasn't run by profiteering gluttons, and you call us criminals. We explore... and you call us criminals. We seek after knowledge... and you call us criminals. We exist without skin color, without nationality, without religious bias... and you call us criminals. You build atomic bombs, you wage wars, you murder, cheat, and lie to us and try to make us believe it's for our own good, yet we're the criminals.

Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that of curiosity. My crime is that of judging people by what they say and think, not what they look like. My crime is that of outsmarting you, something that you will never forgive me for.

lol that reminds me of the floppy bomb that was "advertised" on anarchy sites back in the good old 90ties:
http://forums.livingwithstyle.com/t149009-floppy-disk-bomb.html

you could even do it from a tousand miles away, just label the disk with "hot porn" and send it to someone via ordinary mail

anyway, that article is a typical example for throwing hackers in the same pot as all the other lunatics outthere like anarchy fanatics and crackers.

RayvenD: thanks for posting the manifesto (isnt it from "underground"?). unfortunately, most of the people still think of hackers as being evil and nowadays they are considered to being terrorists. you can go to jail for a very very long time just by pressing some keys on your keyboard - better rob a bank, at least you'd be considered as an ordinary criminal^^

well, judging from the PC they included in the article i believ george bush senior was maybe president at that time, surely not junior. it doesnt even have a 3 1/4" floppy, only 5 1/2" - i'd say its mostlikely a 386-486, so the year would be somewhat around 1994 ;)

can the poster of the article provide us with any information on when the article was published?

Yes thank you!  \\o// Most hackers are awesome!  Don’t be hating now.  That article is so old (If it even was a proper article) I don’t think it’s worth paying attention to.  Good for a bit of a laugh.  :P

ROFLMFAO! That article is sooooooo retarded. Follow-ups: Medics can turn YOU into a bomb and blow your family to smithereens. Phisicians have developped a remote control that can turn your dogs cats hamsters and other pets to antimater and blow your country away with a single anti-mater dog. Microsoft developped a good OS. Bill gates is poor. A company is developping explosive toilet paper so, in order to be safe use only that publication mentioned above as TP.

Edit: And for the love of god! Learn the meaning of the word "hacker".

We know, we know...

Hacker= Goodie two shoes site fixer, defendant of the Code!
Cracker= Anyone in the mood for breaking entries? Ask him.

That was just a simple explanation but should be enough to tell that Hackers are healthy, Crackers unhealthy. Never show your system to a cracker, even if your granny depended on it!(If your system's priceless and makes good cookies.)

Everyone got it? Gooooood...

that's only partially true, well, depending from which point of view ;) crackers as opposed to hackers, yes, the are evil, mostly use tools they dont understand to gain access to a system (script kiddies). but there are also a different kind of crackers which im very fan of: copy-protection crackers, i love them. the silliest copy-protections are inventend by even sillier companies which they sell for the most silly prices to software manufacturers, just to see it cracked even before the software hits the stores  \\o//

why i hate copy-protection? not because i do not want to buy the game (i buy most of them), but because im sick of paying 40$ for a game and then not be able to install it because of the CP - most prominent for such "behaviour" is surely starforce. nevertheless, companies are still trying to "protect" their goods with that bull, and cracker will hopefully always try to crack that.

~shakes his head~  now i have seen an article posted by a few hackers a while back where they acutally made a bomb (with a digital controller) and set it up inside a laptop and hooked it to the serial port if one didn't use the correct password a program accessed the port and sent a command to detonate the bomb..  BOOM!!!  there went the laptop.  Great anti-theft just so long as you didn't really want the laptop back but unless you have access to mil-spec explosives nothing impressive enough to actually do damage to anything but the laptop.

You would be surprised to know what you can do with a bit of chemistry knowlege and a few substances you can find around the house, at the chem shop near you, or even at the drug store., besides, you don't need alot of power if you use a directional fragmentation charge but... whatever, DON'T do that at home. Even with mil explosives [which are alot more stable than the home-made ones and you don't have to make them, process during which you can take a trip to the nearest cloud] you run the risk of blowing yourself up.
