Title: Cooking recipes
Post by: Kerol on October 16, 2006, 09:20:23 pm
We probably will go towards more civil features soon (tm), so crafting food might be coming as well.
I know there were a couple of postings about recipes and cooking already, but most of them were more for fun.
I want to collect ideas on possible recipes that actually could be ingame in this thread.

To get an idea on what utilities could be used, please take a look at the kitchen in one of the taverns. Feel free to propose more utilities if you find it necessary.
To keep this structured please try to follow the following rough scheme:

[name of the recipe]
[description and purpose]
[recipe]
[personal additions and notes]

The [recipe] should be structured in
- utilities and incredients needed as base
- a step by step crafting chain as it is known for crafting weapons like:
place 8 carots, 1 knife on kitchentable; wait for 30 sec -> 1 knife and 1 pile of carot pieces

Let creativity flow!  :sorcerer:

Edit: Alchemy recipes can be included here too!

place 3 large piles of breadcrumbs, 2 water pouch in Mixingbowl; Combine; wait for 3 min 30 sec -> 1 large lump of dough
place 2 large lumps of dough in Rollingpin; Combine; wait for 2 mins -> 1 pie crust base

Apple Filling:

Steamed Clacker Legs:
Place 3 pouches of water and 2 salt into a stock pot over heat->Combine->Wait for the salty water to boil.
Add 1-10 clacker legs to the stock pot and wait (3 or 4 minutes maybe?)
Yeilds: 1-10 steamed clacker legs (same number as above).

Grilled steak:
Place a piece of meat on the grill.
Wait (30 seconds for rare, 45 seconds for medium, 1 minute for well done).
Optional: 'Flip' (grill function) the meat and repeat to cook the other side.
Yeilds: 1 piece of grilled meat.

Clacker and steak stew:
Place 8 carrots, 1 knife on kitchentable; wait for 30 sec -> 1 knife and 1 pile of carrot pieces.  (borrowed from Kerol's example)
Place 6 mushrooms, 1 knife on kitchentable; wait for 30 sec -> 1 knife and 1 pile of mushroom pieces.
Place 2 grilled meats (see above), 1 knife on kitchentable; wait for 30 sec -> 1 knife and 1 pile of grilled meat cubes.
Place 6 steamed clacker legs (see above), 1 knife on kitchentable; wait for 30 sec -> 1 knife, 1 pile of clacker meat, and 1 pile of clacker shells.
Dispose of clacker shells.
Add carrots, mushrooms, meat (steak), clacker meat, 3 pouches of water, and 4 salts (possibly other seasonings) to the stockpot->Combine->Wait for it to heat.
Yeilds: 6 bowls of yummy stew.
Possibly serve it with a slice of bread.

Sliced bread:
Place 1 bread, 1 knife on kitchentable; wait for 30 sec -> 1 knife and 6 slices of bread.
Stop slicing the bread (take it off the table) before you end up with bread crumbs.

[Not sure what new utilites would be needed exactly since I haven't had a check to poke around the kitchens yet.  Also, now that I think about it, I think clacker meat is a lootable item so the leg to meat step may not be neccessary.]

Sorry, I didn't want to break the flow of all these lovely sounding recipes, but I was wondering about this:

Art is part of the settings of PlaneShift, but if you post art/models on the forums then they cannot be put in the game because of the restrictions of the ABC License. Recipes like this would also be part of the settings that make up PlaneShift, thus these great ideas can now no longer be contributed to the game. Especially since they could also be described as "walkthroughs" (but I'm not 100% sure on the policy of non-quest related spoilers.)

Anyone clarify this for me? Thanks.

Great idea though Kerol. Maybe recipes could be sent privately (competition?) to the PS team, and the best will be put in-game?

I can't see how the license would apply to recipes of Apple Pie and Sand Cookies.
I also can't see how the license would apply to the action of boiling a clacker leg ;)

Kerol is a Settings member of the team, so he knows what he's doing (http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/3914/smilebp2.gif) He would have gotten Talad's green flag for this (I hope?) although I can see how this may be a "walkthrough" if these do end up in-game. However, I don't think it's likely that recipes will be used to the exact detail.

These are no spoilers or walkthroughs. They are also not part of the settings or the game yet as they are mere ideas. It is up to us devs to include these ideas as we see fit.

I forgot to add the ever so lovely "I can't promise that anything will be added but I'll see what we can make out of it".

On the other side it's selfexplanatory that people who post their idea here that they want to have the idea ingame and not because they want not (same with the Klyros City thingy).

That said keep up the idea spawning :]

Argue about the name all you want, or change it to your liking.
Why Xacha? Tea seems to go well with their description of "keepers of great knowledge"

Traditional Xacha Tea

Ingredients

Tools required

Preparation
Let the water boil for a moment, then remove the heat source and wait a minute (pot open). Add the rest of the ingredients, close the pot. Wait for 2-3 minutes, skim the tea leaves, stir, done. Add sugar to your liking.

edit again: Changed a couple small things in some prep steps, nothing major... and yes, two more added! lol Added some twists in those, not too out there

edit- Thanks Karyuu for sticking my posts togeter. Good idea  I added another idea and changed some of the steps from the other two after thinking about how combine works a little more.

Utensils-
knife
table
pot
oven

Ingredients-
2x Clacker Meat
4x Mushrooms
1x Bread
4x Water Pouch
4x soup bowls

Serve-
Boiling Gruel + Croutons + 4x Soup Bowls into Table->combine-> 4x Xacha Gruel

Serves four tired and hungry travellers

"Although very different than the traditional Ylian gruel made of water, maybe some milk and a little oatmeal, it hardly is the meal of choice if a Xachan is given the option. Although it includes white meat, it is from the lowly common Clacker. Only the finely toasted crouton resting on top appeals to the Xachan's finer tastes."
-----

Notes: I thought I'd propose another route to get to "Sliced Bread" and beyond. I tried to keep ingredients to existing items, but new utensiils were necessary, of course.

*edit*

Dermorian Trepor Egg Omlette

Endurance +5 to +10 for 2 hours

Utensils-

pan

Ingredients-
1x Trepor Egg Sack
1x Red Meat

Pan of Trepor Eggs + Cooked Diced Meat on Fire->combine->Runy Trepor Omelette->Cooked Trepor Omelette

Serve-
Cooked Trepor Omelette + X# of Plates into Table->combine-> X# of Trepor Egg Omlette + Pan

"A simple meal enjoyed by Dermorians and Ynnwn more than most other species. The Trepor eggs cook into an almost meat-like consistency, making for a hearty meal. It is not for everyone as the eggs gives off an aroma some find more disgusting than delicious. Regardless, it is good way to start a day of long, hard work."

Number served:?
-----

Notes: I left the "Number served" empty as I don't recall the weight of either the Trepor Egg Sack or the Red Meat, so it's hard to say not knowing the masses involved. Again, tried to limit myself to existing items in the world.

edit- another I thought of...

Diaboli Delight

Will and End + for some time

Utensils-
knife
table
pot
pan

Ingredients-
1x Carp Fish
1x Apple
3x Red Liquor Mug

Serve-
Thick Apple Glaze + Seared Carp Fish + Plate into Table->combine-> 1x Diaboli Delight

Number served: one

"A large Diaboli-sized meal that has become popular with many races around Yliakum. The full flavor acheived by pan-searing a full carp fish is offset by the sweet tanginess of the red liquor apple glaze. If cooked correctly, the apples in the glaze will retain their crunch, adding to the texture of the dish. If one can finish an entire Diaboli Delight, its overwhelming freshness is almost contagious, give the eater a very empowering feeling for a brief time. "
-----

Notes: Could use some sugar to make the glaze more "real." Stuck to existing ingredients again, though.

Cook-
2x Cider Mug + 4x Trepor Wiggly Feelers into Pot (combine)->Simmering -> 4x Boiling Wiggly Feelers
4x Boiling Wiggly Feelers into Strainer-> 4x Boiled Wigglies + 2x Wiggly Stock
4x Boiled Wigglies + 4x Thinly Filled Fish into Oven (combine) -> warm ->cooked->4x Browned Wiggly Rolls
Bread Crumbs into Oven->warm->Toasted Bread Crumbs

Serve-
4x Browned Wiggly Rolls + Toasted Bread Crumbs + 4x plate into Table->combine-> 4x Wiggly Rolls

Number served: four

"Never content with the usual, the Lemurs found a way to make Trepor parts (argueably) delicioius. When cooked in cider, not only do the Trepor feelers become chewable, a mild stimulant is also chemically released. Usually prepared with a sweet, preferrably exotic fish, it helps to mask the acrid bite from the feeler juice. Often seen as a side dish. Recommended to try at least once."

Notes: Incorperated a strainer. Thought it would be a good way to make stocks for soup (eg 4x vegetables, boil, strain->boiled veggies + veggy stock).

------

Dwarven Rockhearth Stew

knife
table
pot
scoop
oven

Serve-
4x Thick Hearth Stew + 4x Toasted Bread Bowls into Table->combine-> 4x Rockhearth Stew

Number served: four

"Prized by dwarven fighters for its legendary strength-imparting powers (supposedly from the Ulber heart), it is also quite popular with their wives as there are no plates to clean, only crumbs to dust away. Warmed by the fire through and through, this dish will be appreciated long into the journey through the cold Stone Labyrinths "
-----

Notes: Added a Scoop to the instruments. Could be ice cream in our future???  \\o//

------

Enkidukai Gobble Pockets

+ to Physical Stamina (cumulative) and small End + (noncumulative) for some time

Utensils-
knife
table
pan

Ingredients-
1x Red Meat
1x Gobble Ear

Prep-
Red Meat into Knife ->filleted-> Meat Cubes
Gobble Ear into Knife-> Opened Gobble Ear
Meat Cubes + Opened Gobble Ear into Table (combine)-> Raw Gobble Pocket

Cook-
Raw Gobble Pocket into Pan->seared->Gobble Pocket

Serve-
Ready to eat out of the oven

Number served: one

"Deemed unsavory by some for its incorperation of a Gobble's ear, this meaty snack is most often smelled on hunting Enkidukais. Prepared by incising a Gobble ear along its base and opening it in the shape of an ice cream cone, raw meat is stuffed inside, the open end is folded shut, and the whole thing gets pan fried. Although most consider a Gobble Pocket undercooked, the key to making it edible is crisping the ear flesh to almost a golden brown color."

Notes: Something simple and suitable for the campfires of the future? Peacer gave me the inspiration for this one

Darn ...

Before starting to found alchemy receipes, we first could need a few plants to find, so that herbal skill will get useful as well. Didn't someone want to think about possible plants and send me a mail? ... Better I'll start my own thoughts about that.

Expect a soon reply here. ;)

When I started playing planeshift over half a year ago, I thought being an alchemist/mage would be great. In the mean time I spent my time drinking in the tavern and training left and right, until I am now maxed in most magical ways, so I can kill most rats in one cast! I was getting bored a bit lately, with all my drinking buddies getting into guilds, and no interesting crafts to learn yet. This thread is really what I needed  \\o//. Not that much of an RPer (although I try my best) I did manage to come up with a description a long time ago, that hopefully will make more sense when recipies similar to the last in my list would be fully implemented :)

While writing down the recipies, I came across some points related to all this (and crafting in general), that possibly are better discussed in a separate thread (and keep this thread more as a cook book), but I will just list them here:

OK, here are my first recipies. They may be more useful for giving ideas for other better stuff, but I had fun anyway :)

Grape juice
Refreshing and healthy non-alcoholic drink. Restores health (+10 HP)

Needed:
200 g of grapes (bought from farmer, shop or plucked)
   a bit of sugar
   bowl
   small knife
   sieve
   glass
Skill required:
level 0 in cooking. Higher level speeds up process and decreases chance of sour juice.

Steps:
Make mashed grapes. Cut grapes in bowl with small knife (combine grapes, bowl, knife, wait 10 seconds)
Pass mashed grapes through sieve into glass and add sugar to taste, to make a glass of grape juice. (combine mashed grapes, sieve, sugar and glass, wait 10 seconds)

Cough Syrup

Sweet tasting red liquid. Increases health and stamina (+10 base HP and +10 base Physical Stamina)

Needed:
2 glasses of grape juice (see above)
   sugar
250 g of bark of the Yellow-barked Jojo-tree (found only in remote areas to the sides from Ojaroad, to be removed using a big knife, or axe)
   1 liter of water
   cooking pot on fire
   sieve
   bottle
Skill needed:
cooking. Higher level gives higher rate of succes.
herbal. Higher level gives higher rate of succes and/or more effect (in HP/Stamina increase).
Steps:
Make boiled bark, adding grape juice, sugar, bark and water in cooking pot and boil until reduced to 2 dl. (combine sugar, bark, water and pot on fire, for one minute (depending on skills))
Bottle Cough Syrup, by passing boiled bark through sieve into bottle (combine boiled bark, sieve and bottle, 20 seconds)

Red Wine

A simple red wine, per glass or bottle. This is a cheap wine, of not very high quality. Good for drinking in larger quantities in a tavern or at a party near a camp fire. Beware of use in other circumstances, because it reduces agility by 10 points per glass (50 per bottle), health by 5 points. With this low quality wine, charisma decreases (-10), but 'will' increases (+10), as do  Physical and mental stamina (+5). This does for example mean that against better judgement, you will enter (or get) into fights that you would normally not enter, and hit and dodge much worse than normally, however you will not give up as easily (high will).
Better quality wine may result in less negative effects.

Needed:
One amount of  mashed grapes (see above) per glass, or 5 per bottle
   Sugar
   Acid
Yeast (the special quick fermenting sort. Otherwise this would take months).
   Fermentation jar
   syphon
   glass or bottle
Skills needed:
Wine requires a higher cooking skill of at least 10, at which chances of getting drinkable wine are low. Higher levels mean some steps take less time and quality increases.
Steps:
Make fermented grapes by putting mashed grapes, sugar, acid and yeast in a fermentation jar. Leave it fermenting for 1 minute.
Make clear fermented grapes by adding the fermented grapes into a fermentation jar again via a syphon, and leaving it to ferment another minute (combine fermented grapes, syphon and fermenation jar).
Make glass of red wine by syphoning clear fermented grapes into a glass (combine clear fermented grapes with syphon and glass, takes 20 seconds)

You can make a bottle of red wine by using 5 times the amounts and combining with a bottle in the last step (takes a minute then).

You can make a bit higher quality wine by repeating the fermenation steps, adding clear fermented grapes again into a fermentation jar using a syphon, resulting in clear fermented grapes of higher quality (which results in a higher quality in the last step). There is a maximum number of steps, and an ever higher required skill level (or no wine will be left).
A much better wine would use a wine press, and mature on the bottle for a year :)

Finally:
Lanarel's Elixer of Happy Thoughts

This is very much like red wine, but has none of the negative effects, due to some cunning alchemy, and the addition of medicinal ingredients. It increases charisma and will, physical and mental stamina, and health. The only side effect discovered as of yet, is that if you try to cast a red or dark way spell, it will only result in some very pretty fire works around the head of the caster. Oh, and intelligence drops at 20 points per bottle.

Needed:
Clear fermented grapes (see red wine)
   Cough syrup
Alchemists destillation collumn (with burner and such)
   Alchemists vial
Energy glyph (with some level in Crystal Way)
Stone of Happiness (found on bottom of the lake in direction of Bronze Doors)
   bottle

Skills needed:
Low Alchemy skill (although higher skills speed up the process, increase the chance of success, and produce higher quality, resulting in nicer sparks and such)
Some level in Crystal way, and an energy glyph, to add the magical qualities to the Elixer

Steps:
Make Residue of Happy Thoughts, Pure Alcohol and water by combining Clear fermented grapes, cough syrup and the Stone of Happiness in the Alchemists destillation collumn. You get the stone back too (it is just a catalysor)
Make Elixer of Happy Thoughts by combining  Residue of Happy Thoughts, Pure Alcohol, and bottle in an alchemists vial.
   Drink and be happy.

As a Kran, I feel the urge to make mudpies and crystal crumpets. If there is any info to help guide a chef in a Kran kitchen, I would receive it readily  :)  I read something about seed crystals. Where do these come from? Can Kran eat rubies, diamonds, silver ingots, etc etc

Darn ...

Before starting to found alchemy receipes, we first could need a few plants to find, so that herbal skill will get useful as well....

Yes, I thought this as well. Are the plants in the scenery going to be "harvestable?" I have been staring at flora around Yliakum for inspiration myself, but that's all I have to go on.

...Red Wine

A simple red wine, per glass or bottle...

Brewing recipies to be submitted here too!?  \\o//

...
[li]How does alchemy work? Not really having played any RPG or other game with alchemy, what is the idea (difference to herbal). How is magic tied into this?[/li]...

I wondered this as well. I played a game with alchemy, but it used a more historical type of alchemy. The PS form of alchemy seems tied to vegetables more than minerals.... maybe a Philosopher's Bark is upcoming? I can make up odd potion recipes, but I don't know if they are going to fit the PS mold.

well, at least i RP a kind of "cooking" process. it's quite easy and all neccesary ingredients are available...

..well,.. maybe it's even too easy :P

Baked Apple:
Ingredients:
1 Apple

Tools:
Furnace (i know, it's a bit to hot to bake apples, but it's RP, isn't it? :) )
leather gloves

Put the Apple into the furnace, wait untill it gets brown, take it out.
Take care! The Apple will be really hot! that's why you need the leather gloves.

You may also dunk the apple into red liquer from time to time during the baking process.
It will give it a special look and taste ;)

Nice to have Ingredient:
Sugar (or Honey,.. but we don't have bees, so the chances for honey are bad)

Greetings

Title: The herbal and alchemy crafts according to Stonn ^_^
Post by: Stonn on October 26, 2006, 11:19:54 am
Well, Kerol said there can't be too much, so I'm opening my floodgates :) After reading the description of the Herbal skill, it seems to say a potion made out of an herbal base will be closer to nature. Then reading more about alchemy, it seems very much a mineral and dust kind of art. I spent a lot of time trying to tie the Herbal craft with the Alchemy craft. In my mind, they seem somewhat related like the Metallurgy/Blacksmith pair. So maybe an alchemist can buy basic ingredients from an NPCs (say, like 50/50 quality), but you could also get them from a Herbalist PC (with the potential for better ingredients, ie 300/50). I stared at the 6-way magic chart and tried to tie it into the whole thing as well. So this is what I came up with, the six ways of herbalism...

Each way has a related stat and the same characteristics of the related magic way. Plants of Yliakum posses properties that link them to a specific way. These properties can be tapped into by making "bases" out of tinctures, infusions, and juices from the plants. I made a list of herbalist equipment that might be handy as well...

------

Burner- flame and flask for warming of liquids (warm->boiling->potent->residue)
Crucible- heat for solid materials (warmed->hot->reduced->ash)
Beaker- tabletop vessel for when heat is not required (light->[normal]->concentrated)
Drying Room- cool dark place to dry and cure herbs (moist->cured->dried->stale->)
Mortar and Pestle- for breaking up herbs (crushed->dust)
Strainer- for juicing plants and fruit ([juice of plant])
Alchemist Bottle- the rectangular ones like the colored potions, lesser potion of mana, etc
Table- got to have one

Blue Base

Enkireed + Water Pouch into Beaker (combine)->wait wait (long time) wait (long time)->Concentrated Enkireed Infusion
Fairy Frond into Drier->wait wait-> Dried Fairy Frond
Dried Fairy Frond into Mortar/Pestle->wait wait->Dried Fairy Frond Dust
Dried Fairy Frond Dust into Crucible ->wait wait wait-> Dried Fairy Frond Dust Ash
Dried Fairy Frond Dust Ash + Concentrated Enkireed Infusion + Alchemist Bottle into Table (combine)-> 1x Blue Base

Red Base

2x Bogo Pepper + Alcohol into Burner (combine) wait wait wait wait -> Bogo Pepper Residue
6x Fire Cherry into Strainer->wait->6x Fire Cherry Juice
6x Fire Cherry Juice + Bogo Pepper Residue + Alchemist Bottle into Table (combine)-> 1x Red Base

Azure Base

Balloon Plant into Drier->wait-> Cured Balloon Plant
*do next step twice*
5x Laanx Grass + Water Pouch into Burner (combine) ->wait wait wait wait-> Potent Laanx Grass Infusion
2x Potent Laanx Grass Infusion + Cured Balloon Plant + Alchemist Bottle into Table (combine) -> Azure Base

Dark Base

2x Wormroot + Oil into Beaker (combine)->wait (long time ) wait-> Wormroot Oil
4x Night Bloom + Oil into Burner (combine)-> wait wait wait-> Concentrated Night Bloom Oil
Wormroot Oil + Concentrated Night Bloom Oil + Alchemist Bottle into Table (combiine)-> 2x Dark Base

------

Cold infusions tend to take longer in RL so I applied it to the PS ones with the tag "(long time)" on applicable steps.

An alchemist will use bases and various alchemical ingredients to make unique potions. I thought use of a Yliakum version of the "Philosophers Stone" would help along the nonsensical chemical reations that are inevitable, so maybe a Orichalc Shard?...

I threw gold dust into the last one as the Blue way and Red way are in opposition. Gold seems to make everyone get along, why not The Ways as well  :D Kind of ran out of inspirational steam at the end there and the recipies got simplistic, but you get the idea. Just one big brainstorm anyways.

lol Ahh, thanks for the kind words, Djinn. I would have been bugging the devs to let me on but I'm guessing there are a thousand people like me with "Great ideas." I'm just glad there's a forum I can depressurize into :)

And BTW, I added more recipes to my original food post. Mmm... Wiggler Rolls. Don't want anyone to overlook those hehe

Black Dodeth Pipe Leaf.

Black Dodeth is also called the "leaf of fate", and its smoke is rumored to induce prescient visions. Is is also the Symbol for the month of Kravaan, the time of harvest. The black and crumbly leaf is smoked in a pipe.
________________________________

1)   Find Black Dodeth plants. Black Dodeth is a medium-height, soft-leafed annual with aromatic oval leaves that prefers open, sunny plains.

2)   Harvest leaves. Ten pounds of Fresh Black Dodeth Leaves will be enough to make one pound of Black Dodeth Pipe Leaf.

3)   Dry the leaves. This is most efficient if done in a warm, dry place, such as a low-heat oven, or on a rack over a wood stove. Leaves are ready for use when they have lost their green color and have become black and crumbly.

You are now ready to pack your new Black Dodeth Pipe Leaf in a pipe and smoke it!   :sorcerer:

--------------------------

This is an example from my developing "Plant Recipes" table, rewritten for the cooking recipes thread. I've made about 40 entries so far, ranging from herbal tisanes and healing infusions to fibers and dyes for textiles and such. Some are concepts made up on my own, some are garnered from other players who use them in RP, and many come from various references within the game material itself, such as this one here for Black Dodeth Pipe Leaf.

I am currently working on reformatting the table so that each plant of origin and its various potential processes and products should be able to be hooked up with crafting code with just simple transformations of the table.

I just wonder one thing. Maybe this discussion has already occurred maybe not.
Why do we assume that the ingredients name are the same as the ones in "our" world?
Shouldn't the herbs/vegetables have different names since it is another world?
how can there be tomatoes, just for saying, when also the "quality" of the sun is different? etc.etc.?

I think some discussion was in another thread. Also in an earlier post in this thread Ligh said:

Before starting to found alchemy receipes, we first could need a few plants to find, so that herbal skill will get useful as well. Didn't someone want to think about possible plants and send me a mail? ... Better I'll start my own thoughts about that.
Expect a soon reply here. ;)
(Still waiting for that reply :) )

I think (hope) the way this thread is useful is that everyone puts thought into different parts of a recipe. Some give ideas of how a process can be split up in half-products and final products. Some give more ideas of what tools to use. A few try to find ways of combining cooking, herbal and alchemy skills, or (in my case) to find out a bit of how this is supposed to work. Others give examples of recipes that could fit the setting, with new ingredients and more thought out descriptions. Very few would directly fit into the game I guess, but they all provide something I hope the settings and crafting devs can use, so cooking (and hopefully herbal and alchemy) skills will be implemented sooner :)

Well, yes and no. There certainly are some fruits that are similar to the "real world". It doesn't matter however at this stage which is reasonable in those recipes and what not, as we can change the name and look of ingredients at a later point either way. I think it is even more helpful right now to use RL names and items as it will give a better idea on how things are supposed to be (from the writers perspective).

@ Lanarel:

Another member asked boldly to create some new vegetation, and I waited for him first ... but now I doubt that he was successful in the last weeks. So I will have to start on my own. But I probably can't compete with Stonn Mrogg - stunning work!

Uhm, I understand, however I am a bit suspicious over this technique.
For example, I think having some beverage called tea is anyway dangerous because it assumes that, even if you don't call it tea, you will have something made by "boiled leaves of some herb".
I am also bewildered over the fact that there are things that resembles what we have in our world and this also to the material food that you obtained.
Obviously, it is just the way I think :-)

That's more a philosophical question, which I will answer philosophically - although it is  :offtopic:
We have the same physics in PS as in RL (and additionally the magical environment, but that doesn't substitute the physics). This induces the same logical base. According to the same logic with a similar material (physical/chemical) base similar structures have to develop - organic stuff like leaves and other living things.
With the same argument people will discover similar effects like leaf + hot water = brew.
Once you have fire and know how to boil water it isn't far from discovering this.
However, for more complex stuff it won't be the same - like tarts or coque au vin.

Physics is not biology, though (maybe we should open another thread if it doesn't exist already?)!
How can leaves exist, be green and develop, if there is not the sun light? Does the crystal light warm?

Anyway, I think imho that everything is possible, as long as it is coherently justified and there are no logical flaws :-) I am not saying that the thoughts of todays are wrong! :)

I'll answer your questions in private another time, just remind me :)

Well, I actually think that it is good to know what it is possible on a "chemical" level in order to have the most proper cooking recipes. But if you think that it is not related, I would just rather prefer to have another topic, since I think this is of everybody interest and not just mine!

To finally keep my promise:

The Cumbana

is a vegetable which grows in large fields on the floor of streaming waters. The fruits are rich and fleshy inside [ imagine a cucumber ], covered by several layers of strong leaves [ imagine closed corn. ]. Although predjudiced as "poor people food", you shall not underestimate their healthy ingredients.

In warm seasons, almost daily one of the fruits per plant on the ground ripens and starts to rise during the early hours of the day, up to the surface of the river, connected to the main plant on the floor with a long stem. It floats on the surface during noon, and finally opens the fruit covering leaves.

Cumbanas should be harvested when they are just about to open, but not yet fully revealed. Open cumbanas macerate soon, and before the evening they will drift away as a kind of thick foam on the surface. Just in time harvested cumbanas can be kept for almost a week when keeping them chilled and only slightly humid.

Then they can be used as vegetables - for example, they are often sliced lengthwise, and the soft kernels get substituted by minced meat or spicy fruits [ like filled zucchini ]. Also they are sometimes sliced crosswise and baked under a cover of a few days old, slightly sour milk [ gratinated ].

A different way of use is harvesting them when they are still closed and about to rise to the surface. Then especially children enjoy to dive into the river, cut the stems, and hang them into the sun over a clothesline. Well dried they are a sweet fruity snack [ imagine slightly dried bananas. ].

Interesting to see that a few pieces got implemented. Unfortunately only a few.
